A very unique experience! Chori (sp?) was informative, and fun! She showed us how to make some terrific drinks that we’ll be able to recreate at home. In addition, she gave us some background about the origins of rum and the Bacardi empire. Generous drinks, laughs and we learned something too! I highly recommend.

Rum Tasting Tour – Casa BACARDÍ Puerto Rico

We have been to a lot of distillery tours over the years, and most are similar. The Bacardi tour however is in my top ten for sure, topping Jack Daniels in my opinion. You will not be disappointed in this tour! Our tour guide was “Ed” and this guy knows how to entertain and educate a crowd! This tour was well planned and timed perfectly. We never felt rushed. Hanging out at the outside bar for our complimentary drinks was a great way to get to know the staff and have some fun. 5 Stars!

How the moonshine “finishing” business became the largest family-owned liquor company

Bacardimediacentre.com

Article from How to Spend, September 2012 issue

Today, Bacardi Limited, headquartered in Bermuda, is managed by a representative seventh generation of the Bacardi family. The brainchild of Don Facundo and his descendants is part of the Bacardi-Martini group of companies, which owns a “brand portfolio” in every sense of the stunning. In addition to the legendary rum and vermouth of the same name, these are Dewar’s whiskey, Bombay Sapphire gin, Otard cognac, as well as Amaretto di Saronno, Drambuie and Benedictine liqueurs, Cazadores tequila, vodkas – French Gray Goose and Eristoff, New Zealand 42 Below … In total, more than 200 brands alcohol sold in 150 countries of the world! nine0006

Chemistry and life

And it all began a century and a half ago in Cuba, where only the lazy did not drive strong sugar cane liquor. They called this burda rum, although it had about the same relation to the current noble drink as today’s Island of Freedom has to real freedom. Until Facundo Bacardi got down to business…

In 1814, the fourth child was born to mason Juan Bacardi Masso from the Catalan city of Sitges, who was named Facundo. At the age of fifteen, the future “rum king” went to seek his fortune in Cuba, which was then a Spanish colony. Members of the Bacardi family had already settled there, and Facundo began his career in the shop of his older brother Jose, who sold goods from the metropolis. And in 1843, having gained experience, he founded his own company Facundo Bacardi y Cia in Santiago de Cuba. The younger Bacardi specialized in Spanish wines, his business was successful, but it all ended on one terrible day on August 21, 1852, when a terrible earthquake destroyed half the city. A few days later, another push followed, and the beginning of the cholera epidemic completed the job. nine0006

Having lost two children, Bacardi took the surviving part of the family home. In his absence, the store was looted, so I had to start all over again – to get a job again with my brother (whose business, fortunately, was not affected). While selling alcohol in a “brotherly” firm, Facundo Bacardi became interested in new technologies for the production of rum. I had to master the basics of chemistry and spend almost ten years among flasks and retorts. But in the end, the work was rewarded. An amateur chemist managed to isolate a special strain of yeast that imparted a special, incomparable flavor to the coarse drink (this strain is still used in the production of Bacardi rum to this day). In addition, Bacardi discovered that when rum is passed through a carbon filter, the quality of the drink increases dramatically, and if, in addition, rum is kept in oak barrels, it acquires softness unexpected for a coarse drink. nine0006

This is how the world found today’s white rum – pure, soft and fragrant. In 1862, the brothers founded the winemaking and wine trading company Bacardi y Compania. After buying the distillery from their rum supplier, they began producing the never-before-seen white rum Bacardi Carta Blanca.

Cuba Libre

The end of the century before last was stormy in Cuba. A series of uprisings against the Spanish colonialists resulted in a full-scale people’s liberation war for independence. And at 189In the year 8, the rebellious island gained its long-awaited freedom. This was greatly facilitated by the local patriotic bourgeoisie, among which was the Bacardi family, and the son of Don Facundo, Emilio Bacardi, who headed the company in 1877, so ardently supported the leader of the revolution, Jose Marti, that he was behind bars more than once and twice expelled from the island. But when the revolution won, Don Emilio was given what he deserved – he was elected mayor of Santiago, and later became a senator of the independent Republic of Cuba. It was then that the legendary cocktails Cuba Libre (“Free Cuba”) and daiquiris were born, which were a mixture of Bacardi rum with Coca-Cola (in the first case) and with lime and sugar in the second. nine0006

And a little later, a new round of prosperity for Bacardi, against their will, was facilitated by the American neighbors, who had previously provided active assistance to the rebels during the American-Spanish war. When prohibition was passed in the United States in the 1920s, the Bacardi factory built by that time in New York was, of course, closed. But the Cuban owners did not lose heart, because their island has become a real Mecca for American tourists: Miami is a stone’s throw away, and drinking is no problem!

Things went so fast that at 1922 Emilio Bacardi founded a new winery in Santiago. And his son-in-law Enrique Shueg, who also entered the family business, eight years later opened a new company office in Havana (Bacardi Building is considered one of the most striking examples of Art Deco architecture in Latin America). In the 1930s, new factories appeared in Mexico and Puerto Rico. And a decade later – after the repeal of Prohibition – Bacardi opened a representative office in the United States. It was a coup – today the States account for almost half of all Bacardi rum sold. nine0006

To freedom – from the Island of Freedom

After the end of the Second World War, during which the reins of the company passed to the son-in-law of Shuega – Jose Bosch, nothing seemed to portend troubles for the Cuban company, which managed to “fill in” with its rum throughout the Western Hemisphere.

But in 1952, a military coup took place in the country, as a result of which the regime of the pro-American dictator Batista came to power. A year later, a rebel detachment led by a young lawyer and aspiring politician Fidel Castro tried to storm the fortified barracks of Moncada in Santiago de Cuba. This speech ended unsuccessfully, the leaders of the uprising were put on trial and received long prison terms. However, under pressure from public opinion, Batista granted amnesty to the convicts, after which Castro and his associates emigrated to Mexico, where preparations began for a new revolution in Cuba. Ended, as you know, in the early days of January 19On the 59th, the triumphal entry of armed rebel groups into Santiago de Cuba and Havana.

The revolution in Cuba has won again. But this time the “rum” family failed, as last time, to catch the wind of the revolution in their sails. While the rebels under the leadership of Castro, with varying success, conducted guerrilla operations against government troops, the Bacardi family was divided in their political preferences. Some of its members supported Batista, others, including José Bosch, on the contrary, stood for Castro. The head of the firm personally transferred tens of thousands of dollars to the revolutionaries. nine0006

Although we must pay tribute to Bosch’s intuition: immediately after the victory of the revolution, he just in case re-registered the Bacardi trademark in the calmer Bahamas. And there he transferred all the documentation, which contained, in particular, the technological secrets of rum production. And when the victorious Castro unequivocally announced his intention to build socialism in Cuba, the whole family unanimously went over to the opposition to the new regime. After the expected nationalization of the company, which followed on October 19On the 60th, Bacardi had no choice but to leave Freedom Island and move to the United States.

With the loss of property in Cuba, Bacardi has managed to maintain its overseas manufacturing facilities plus brand name. To catch up, funds were needed, and the company’s management had to go for partial corporatization. And then, already in the 1980s, the new generation of the Bacardi family decided to consolidate the shares, buying them back from the “alien” shareholders and returning them to the “family piggy bank”.

By that time, the company had regained its leadership in the “rum” segment of the global alcohol market. And she began to systematically master other segments. nine0006

In 1993, Martini & Rossi, the world’s largest vermouth producer, merged to form the Bacardi-Martini group of companies. After that, the firm was headed by the first “not a member of the family” (but just the Bacardi family lawyer) – George Reid, who perfectly justified his name: under him, the account of purchased companies and brands went to dozens.

Pirate drink

The rich professional experience of the new head of Bacardi – Martini came at the time: the trade litigation for the popular trademark Havana Club had just begun. nine0006

In 1997, Bacardi-Martini bought the tasty trademark from its owners, the Archabala family, the same emigrants from the Island of Freedom, whose company was also nationalized after the revolution. For its part, the Cuban government also claimed the brand. And it backed up the claims by creating the eponymous joint venture Havana Club Holding with one of the main competitors of Bacardi – Martini – the French “heavyweight” Pernod Ricard. Which, according to the Cubans and the French, owns the exclusive worldwide rights to sell the Havana Club. nine0006

As a result of a protracted trade war, Stumbling Rum is still sold by a Cuban-French JV. Everywhere – except the United States, where in 1996 the Helms-Burton Act was adopted, providing for additional economic sanctions against Cuba.
