    Not convinced it was worth the $30. Our tour guide was great when we could hear him. We could not hear a single word while on the trolly and it was a hit or a miss on if we caught what he was saying. ….

Bacardi white rum – taste characteristics

09 May 2020

White rum “Bacardi” is a premium drink of transparent color with a soft and clean taste, dominated by hints of fruit and caramel, vanilla and pepper. The aroma of the drink gracefully intertwines notes of almonds, tropical fruits, caramel and meadow herbs. All this makes Bacardi white rum an ideal base for such popular alcoholic cocktails as mojitos and daiquiris.

History of “Bacardi”

Bacardi was founded in 1862 in Santiago de Cuba. The Bacardi brothers changed the technology of rum production. The cultivation of a special type of yeast, the modernization of filtration processes, and long-term experiments with the recipe made it possible to create a light rum with a mild taste and delicate aroma, which was fundamentally different from traditional drinks from the Caribbean. This allowed the company in 1888 to become a supplier to the Spanish royal court.

Rum “Bacardi” has become an ideal basis for cocktails, on the basis of this drink in 1989 the recipe “Daiquiri” was developed, and in 1900 – “Cuba Libre”. In 1919, prohibition is introduced in the United States and wealthy Americans flock to Cuba, where they spend time in entertainment establishments. The volume of production of rum “Bacardi” is increasing, which allows you to open large enterprises in Mexico and Puerto Rico.

In 1959, after the victory of the Cuban Revolution, the Bacardi family moved to the USA, new factories were opened in the Bahamas and in the States. At 1978 Bacardi becomes the leading producer of premium alcohol in the United States. In the 90s, the company buys up the production of whiskey, gin, martini and is one of the four largest alcohol producers in the world. Today, more than 200 million bottles of rum are produced per year, which are supplied to the markets of 150 countries. The company owns more than 100 brands, including Martini, Dewar’s, Laurent-Perrier, Baron Otard.

Types of white rum “Bacardi”

The company produces several types of white rum. Most popular:

  • Carta Blanca – rum distillates aged 1.5 years in white oak barrels. The taste reveals a hint of caramel and fruit, and the aftertaste pleases with hints of vanilla. The aroma is woven from chords of almonds, tropical fruits and vanilla. It is used in pure form or in cocktails;
  • Superior 1909 is a strong white rum with an alcohol content of 44.5%. The taste is woven from notes of vanilla, fruit and caramel, and the aroma captivates with hints of almonds. Used to create strong cocktails;
  • Castillo Silver Rum is a white rum with an amazing creamy taste and aroma, which reveals notes of sugar cane and white oak. Recommended in its pure form, harmoniously combined with hard cheeses;
  • Facundo Neo is a soft rum made from distillates aged from 1 to 8 years. The complex taste reveals notes of oak, pepper, spices, the fruity aroma conquers with hints of green apples, dried apricots and bananas, to which nuances of almonds, vanilla and brown sugar are added. Rum is recommended in pure or diluted form.

Bacardi worked on the very first recipe for white rum for ten years, the drink has become a benchmark for all producers of this class of drinks. Along with amber Oakheart and dark Carta Negra, Bacardi white rum has become the hallmark of the company.

Rum: the drink of pirates and intellectuals

Bacardi

Facts – B – Brands – Bacardi

T U V Y Z W Y Y Z

Many of us consider rum to be the drink of pirates. Meanwhile, there was a person who made this alcohol elite, accustoming even the highest persons to it. Facundo Bacardi also changed the taste of rum, setting the standard for other producers. The history of the Bacardi brand originates from the colorful island of Cuba. It was there that in the first half of the 19th century, at the age of fifteen, Don Facundo Bacardi went. On the island, he began working in his brother José’s shop, selling Spanish goods. However, the ambitious young man did not like working for someone – he promised himself to start his own business. And in order to fulfill his dream, Facundo begins to save literally on everything.

In 1843, Don Bacardi founded his own company, Facundo Bacardi y Cia. She sells alcohol. But things did not immediately improve – on August 21, 1852, a terrible earthquake occurred. Half of the city was destroyed, and every tenth inhabitant died from the outbreak of cholera. Two of Facundo’s children were among the victims. Then the businessman made an important decision to move his family to Spain. When Bacardi returned to Cuba, he found that his store had simply been looted. The Spaniard simply did not have the strength and means to restore the business, as a result, his company simply went bankrupt. After such a failure, Don Facundo could only return again to his brother José, who was able to keep his business. However, those problems that deprived Facundo of his family and business only tempered his character and forced him to look for new opportunities.

In those days, rum was a rather coarse and unprocessed drink. He was sharp and burned, for which the Caribbean pirates fell in love with him at one time. For the nobility, this drink was of no interest, which is why it was not found at secular parties. Bacardi decided to change this situation and create a new, more civilized drink. He devotes all his free time to experiments on distilling rum at home, using various enzymes and raw materials.

Soon Bacardi came up with a new technology for the production of rum, which had not been used by anyone before him. He began to soften this rough drink, passing it through a charcoal filter. Thus it became possible to remove impurities. Then the rum was aged in an oak barrel, picking up its blend. Like a real experimental scientist, Facundo keeps his work log, evaluating all the results of the work carried out. A lot of trial and error eventually gave the desired result – a product that met all the expectations and standards of Bacardi.

His rums were both softer and lighter in comparison to local competitors. Those were so strong and heavy that they were more like medicine. The surprisingly light rum from Don Facundo, due to its aging and aroma, not only differed from other varieties of rum, but was not at all like any other alcoholic drink.

Bacardi wanted to introduce his discovery to the alcohol market as soon as possible. To do this, the brothers Facundo and José bought a small liquor factory from John Nan, paying 3,500 pesos for it. Thus opened a new page in the history of Bacardi. On February 4, 1862, the company “Bacardi y Compania” was officially registered. She quickly won clients and influential fans. Rum Bacardi fell in love with gourmets, monarchs and just independent people. This drink formed a new idea about the drink, changing the attitude towards it. Don Facundo created a new variety of rum – Bacardi carta blanca. The very first samples had such an original and minty taste that even today they are a measure for other rums.

Bacardi soon realized that his products needed a recognizable trademark. This is how the famous bat appeared. According to legend, it was this beast that Don Facundo’s wife, Doña Amalia Lucia Victoria Moro, saw when she visited his first Cuban factory. But in Catalonia there is a sign that bats symbolize wealth, luck, health and family happiness. Since 1862, rum began to come out with its own brand name. He, along with the right distribution, allowed the brand to quickly become popular in Cuba. The island quickly became aware of the new, well-aged and soft rum. In addition, the brand name helped, as if endowing the drink with magical powers.

Another iconic symbol of the company is the coconut tree planted near the very first Bacardi plant. This tree has become almost the same age as the company, Facundo himself considered it a relic. Before his death, the founder of the brand bequeathed to his heirs not to cut down a palm tree in any case, but to take care of it. The request was heard – although production was constantly growing, new buildings appeared, the sons of Bacardi looked after the iconic tree.

In 1877, a new leader appeared in the company. Now it is headed by the son of Facundo Bacardi, Emilio. He was actively involved in politics, supporting the local nationalist, the fighter against the Spaniards, Jose Marti. For this, Emilio Bacardi even went into exile twice. And at 189In 8, Cuba became independent, in no small part thanks to the assistance of Bacardi. Emilio himself becomes first the mayor of Santiago, and in 1906, the senator of the republic.

Popularization of the drink is growing with the advent of the Cuba libre cocktail. At the end of the 19th century, in the midst of the islanders’ struggle for their independence, American soldiers landed on the island to help their neighbors. One of the soldiers ordered a mixture of Bacardi rum with Coca-Cola in a bar in Havana, to which he also added ice and a slice of lemon. The brave captain drank his drink with such pleasure that it did not go unnoticed by the visitors. The bartender began to order the same thing, a mixture of rum and Coca-Cola became the highlight of the evening. As a result, one of the soldiers offered a toast to Free Cuba “Por Cuba Libre!”. The crowd picked up the slogan that gave the new cocktail its name. It quickly became popular in Cuba. And although both components are distributed each in their own way, the cocktail has earned recognition around the world.

In 1920, Prohibition was introduced in the USA. Such a measure for rum Cuba was most welcome. And the Bacardi company itself received an impetus for development. Indeed, in those years, many Americans came to the island to relax and unwind with a glass of their favorite Cuba Libre cocktail. In 1927, the company organized the first regatta in its honor. It was one of the first and brightest marketing moves that helped to promote the brand. Since then, sailing races have been held every year.

Family legend says that in the middle of 19In the 1950s, the famous palm tree began to die. This was a sign that the company was in trouble. But until then, the rum brand was actively developing. The political stability on the island came to an end – the pro-American course of the government caused more and more discontent. There was a split in the family itself – some descendants of Don Facundo supported Castro, while others supported Batista. On the eve of the revolution in Cuba, the Bacardi family decided to leave the island, and the famous tree soon died. But since then, it has been customary for the company to plant coconut palms around each office or workshop. At 19In 59, the company was re-registered in the Bahamas. On October 14, 1960, the new, revolutionary government seized all the assets of the wealthy Bacardi family. It lost about $76 million that day. Representatives of the clan were forced to emigrate to the United States.

The new government, having confiscated the rum factories, began to produce a drink there, passing it off as real Bacardi. But the owners did not know that secret formulas were used in the production. Then the Bacardi family sued, defending their rights to the brand, this dispute was won. Fake rum was withdrawn from sale, and the rights to the company and trademark were returned to their historical owners. Soon the company placed 10% of its shares on the stock exchange in order to somehow compensate for its losses.

By the end of the 1970s, Bacardi rum was the most popular spirit in the United States. However, the success and global recognition of the company’s former unity within itself does not bring. In 1977, several members of the clan sold their stakes (about 12% in total) to Canadian whiskey maker Hiram Walker. In 1980, internal strife forces management to buy back all shares from holders, including third-party companies. In 1983, the 200 millionth case of rum was produced at the Bacardi distillery. And after some time, the company acquired the world’s largest wine producer Martini & Rossi. At 19In 1996, the Bacardi-Martini Alliance became the leader for the first time without a member of the Bacardi family. Lawyer George Reid proved to be excellent already in 1997, when the rights to Havana Club rum were bought out.

The fact is that the government of Cuba believed that the stamp was considered national property. The Bacardi family found a powerful ally in the French Pernod Ricard, who were promised the exclusive right to sell the Havana Club. During the brand war, the Cuban authorities unleashed their entire propaganda machine on Bacardi-Martini. The concern was accused of supporting the anti-Cuban policy of the United States, of preparing the assassination of Fidel Castro, of violating intellectual property rights. Although the company was unable to defend the rights to worldwide sales of the Havana Club, the American market was recaptured. At 19In 1998, the company’s portfolio included several more well-known brands – Dewars whiskey, DiSaronno amaretto, Bombay gin.

A museum has appeared in Puerto Rico, whose name translates as “House of Bacardi”. The exposition presents several dozens of rare exhibits from repositories and private collections. And in one of the rooms, commercials for rum sent from different countries are playing non-stop.
