Escudo tronchado dividido
por una lnea diagonal que va del cantn diestro del Jefe al cantn siniestro
de la punta. En su campo dividido estn los colores que son: Rojo, smbolo de
fuego y de fortaleza, valor, fidelidad, alegra y honra. Negro: smbolo de la
noche y del arrepentimiento, de la prudencia, la modestia, el temor, el
secreto, y el desinters.

Sobre ese fondo rojo y
negro est un len de color amarillo y melena negra, pasante hacia la diestra
del escudo ontornando hacia la diestra. Este len
pasante est sobre el puente. El puente tendr color amarillo en el contorno
superior, seguido de color ladrillo en el centro y en la parte inferior color
gris. Los ros estn simbolizados por lneas grises sobre el fondo negro. Tiene
el escudo un trechor o confrafilete a su alrededor de
color amarillo. En la parte superior del escudo est una corona con cinco
torres que significa las etapas de crecimiento de nuestra ciudad. 

BANDERA

La bandera es de forma
rectangular con los tradicionales colores rojo y negro
formando dos paos a manera de tringulo, donde en su esquina superior
izquierda se unen cada uno de dicho tringulo al igual la esquina inferior
derecha. Siendo dicho tringulo con fondo rojo en su parte superior y con fondo
negro en su parte inferior. La figura del len sobre el puente aparece
enmarcada con marco en forma derecha en su parte superior sobre el cual aparece
la palabra PONCE, y la base del marco en forma ovalada con los nmeros 1692
exactamente debajo del puente. Sobre el marco debe aparecer una corona en oro
con cinco torres indicativo de que Ponce es Ciudad por Decreto Real.

BARRIOS

Algunos Datos

Antiguamente se le llamaba Ponce a toda la llanura del sur de Puerto Rico, desde el Ro Portugus
hasta la Baha de Guayanilla, desde el 1646.

El nombre de este municipio de deriva del conquistador de
Puerto Rico, Don Juan Ponce de Len, pero hay historiadores que dicen que el nombre fu por el
biznieto, Juan Ponce de Len y Loaiza. Uno de los ncleos ms importantes de Ponce, fue el establecido
en las orillas del Ro Portugus donde se radic Don Pedro Rodrguez de Guzmn, natural de
San Germn y a quien se le llam el Portugus por ser descendientes de Portugueses. Por eso el
nombre de este ro que anteriormente se le llamaba Ro Baramaya.

A principios del siglo 18, Don Antonio Abad Rodrguez Berros construy una ermita bajo la advocacin
de San Antonio Abad, que ms tarde derivara el nombre de San Antn. Ponce se fund el 17 de
septiembre de 1692 y se realiz mediantes una Real Cdula que convirti la capilla en Parroquia dependiente
de la Villa de San Germn.

Al momento de su fundacin, Ponce dependa religiosa y polticamente de San Germn, para el 1776
dependa tanto en lo civil y religioso de la Villa de Coamo.

Fonce fue declarado Villa, por real orden de Isabel II en el 1848 y en el 1877 se le concede el ttulo de ciudad.

1800 – En este ao Ponce era un Villorio con humildes bohos en la Plaza. Todo lo dems
fabricado en la actualidad era una pradera, donde se apacentaba ganado.
1804 – Se habilita el puerto de Ponce para el comercio, cuya franquicia le fue concedida
por Real Decreto el 28 de febrero de 1789.
1812 – Es aplicada a la Isla la Constitucin de Cdiz. Don Jos Ortiz de la Renta es
electo Primer Alcalde Constitucional.
1816 – Epidemia de fiebre amarilla, con muchos muertos.
1819 – Corsarios ingleses desembarcan por la zona de Bocachica y son rechazados.
1852 – Sale a la luz pblica El Ponceo, primer peridico publicado en la Villa.
1865 – Poblacin de Ponce constaba de 29,542 habitantes.
1917 – Ponce celebra regiamente la extensin a la isla de la ciudadana norteamericana.
1937 – Domingo de Ramos, por la tarde, ocurre lo que en nuestra historia se conoce como
La Masacre de Ponce.
1957 – Ponce celebra regiamente el 16 de mayo, el centenario del Natalicio de Don Juan
Morell Campos, padre de la Danza Puertorriquea.
1985 – Grandes lluvias que ocasionaron inundaciones y derrumbes que a su vez
ocasionan el Desastre de Mameyes donde fallecen cientos de personas.

Ponceos Distinguidos

Juan Morel Campos – naci en Ponce el 16 de mayo de 1857 y muri el 26 de abril de
1896. Fue discpulo del maestro Manuel G. Tavrez, bombardino solista en el Batalln de
Cazadores de Madrid, se distingui como compositor de danzas puertorriqueas.

Ruth Fernndez – naci en Ponce el 23 de mayo alrededor del ao 1919. Se distingue
como cantante de Msica popular en PR. Actualmente dedica su tiempo libre a ayudar a
las vctimas del cncer, a los nios y adultos lisiados y a colaborar con la Cruz Roja.

Jos N. Gndara – naci en Ponce en el ao 1907. Perteneci al cuerpo mdico de la
Clnica Dr. Pila. Muri el 11 de octubre de 1954.

Miguel Pou – naci el 24 de abril de 1880 y muri el 6 de mayo de 1968. Realiz
abundantes exposiciones y dio clases de pintura. Fund la Academia Pou en Ponce.

Don Rodulfo Del Valle – naci en 1871 y muri en 1948. Desempe en el Gobierno
Municipal cargos de importancia tales como comisionado de Servicio Pblico y Tesorero
Municipal.

Sor Isolina Ferr (1914-2000) – En 1936 se uni a las Siervas de Misioneras de la Santsima
Trinidad. Su trabajo se concentr en las comunidades marginadas de la ciudad de Nueva York.
en el 1968 regresa a Puerto Rico dondes realiz una misin religiosa y social desde el sector
La Playa de Ponce. All radic el Centro Sor Isalina Ferr para servir a jvenes de escasos
recursos. Fund el Centro de Orientacin Sor Isolina Ferr en el 1969. En 1988 otro centro en el Barrio
Caimito en Ro Piedras. Su labor y esfuerzo han sido reconocidos en Puerto Rico y en los Estados Unidos.

Luis A. Ferr – Fund el Museo de Arte de Ponce en el 1959, que es uno de los ms completos en las
Antillas. En la poltica, particip en las luchas electorales como lider del sector republicano y estadoista.
Candidato a la gobernacin de Puerto Rico en diversas ocasiones. Gobernador de 1969-1973 y fundador
del Partido Nuevo Progresista que lucha por la estadidad para Puerto Rico.

Rafel Henndez Coln – Fue secretario de justicia en el 1965. Presidente del Senado hasta el 1972
y gobernador desde el 1973 hasta el 1977 y desde 1985-1993. Ha publicado varias obras entre ellas:
Procedimiento Civil, Trayectoria Histrica de la Autonoma Poltica Puertorriquea y Nueva Tesis.
