9 Best Places to Go Camping In Puerto Rico

Seven Seas Beach

See the sunrise from this beautiful beach

Camping tent in Seven Seas

🗺️ Distance from San Juan: 1 hour | Google Maps | Destination Website | ⛺ Amenities: Bathrooms, showers, RV hookups, gazebos | Reservation Phone #: (787) 863-4013 | Reservation Email: [email protected]

Seven Seas in Fajardo is part of the Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, one of the national parks in Puerto Rico where you can camp.

Located on the east coast, Seven Seas Beach sports white soft sand, and clear turquoise waters perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and diving.

Visitors can pay $10 a night per person to stay right on the beach. Bathrooms and showers are available for an additional fee of $1.00. Renting campers and camping spaces is also an option.

This nature reserve hosts attractions that outdoor enthusiasts will love such as Playa Colora, Playa Escondida, and the San Juan Cape Lighthouse. It’s also close to other Fajardo’s top attractions like Laguna Grande bio bay.

Playuela

Hike, ride, and camp on this breathtaking coast

🗺️ Distance from San Juan: 20 hours 35 minutes | Google Maps | ⛺ Amenities: none

Playuela is one of the popular coasts for camping in Puerto Rico. Located on the coast of Aguadilla, Playuela is great for a couple’s retreat. Playuela has surfing beaches, lighthouse ruins, hiking trails, and MTB trails.

The area is easy and free to access, and although there aren’t any facilities, you can visit in camper vans and RVs (if you can get through the muddy road).

But, if you wish for a more comfortable stay, camp in the area with Playuela horseback rides to have easy access to facilities like bathrooms and showers.

Sun Bay Beach

Enjoy the Caribbean ocean view from your tent in Vieques

🗺️ Distance from Ceiba: 30 minutes by ferry | Google Maps | ⛺ Amenities: toilets, showers, changing rooms, and BBQs

Camping in Sun Bay Beach is one of the most popular things to do in Vieques. Staying at Sun Bay is the perfect way to stay close to Vieques’ attractions like the Mosquito Bio Bay and wildlife refuge.

It’s one of the best sites to camp with the family, as you have easy access to bathrooms, showers, changing rooms, BBQs, and gazebos. The beach itself is one of the safest in Vieques, as it has lifeguards and security.

You need to bring your own camping gear and RVs aren’t allowed in the area. In addition, you do need to coordinate previously and request a permit to stay in Vieques, but you can also arrange it at the on-site office.

Our Pick

Mombasa Outback Travel Net

$22.00

If you don’t have the space for a full-size tent, then I do recommend you travel with a mosquito net. This one is awesome as it stands up and is very economical.

Mona Island

Camp in the Galapagos of the Caribbean

🗺️ Distance from West Coast: 4 hours boat trip | Google Maps | ⛺ Amenities: none

Mona island promises one of the best camping experiences you’ll have in Puerto Rico. This offshore island is located outside the west coast, right in between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

Mona hides pristine wildlife, caves, hiking trails, and a lighthouse. Camping is allowed from May to November only with a permit from Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural and Environmental Resources.

You’ll need to be an expert camper to camp and Mona Island, and you’ll have to bring everything necessary for your stay.

You can download the online application, and mail it to the DRNA office. However, Mona Island Tours and Acampa can organize the trip for you.

Cerro Las Tetas

Camp on top of a popular Puerto Rico mountain

(photo: Euri Rivera / Shutterstock)

🗺️ Distance from San Juan: 1 hour 11 minutes | Google Maps | Destination Website | ⛺⛺ Amenities: bathrooms, showers, common areas for cooking, and bonfire area

Cerro Las Tetas Camping site is on top of one of the popular Puerto Rico mountains, between Cayey, Salinas, and Aibonito.

This camping site is great for those who want a combination of relaxing nature and a thrilling experience as it offers additional activities like rock climbing.

You can either book a space for your tent or a special offer that includes camping, meals, and excursions through the area. Although camping vans are welcome, the space is not RV friendly.

👉 Did You Know? Cerro Las Tetas refers to two mountain peaks in Salinas that got their Spanish name due to their similarity with a woman’s chest. Many people stop on highway 51 to take a picture of the mountain’s two peaks.

Playa Rustica

A beachside camping experience with everything ready for you

🗺️ Distance from San Juan: 2 hours and 52 minutes | Google Maps | Destination Website | ⛺ Amenities: bathrooms, showers, and solar panels | 👉 Book a Night with Booking

Playa Rustica is one of the best camping areas in Cabo Rojo.

This camping site offers “easy camping” which includes air mattresses, solar fans, pillows and linens, a stove, and even kitchen utensils, so you don’t have to worry about packing your camping tent.

You can also rent a space for your camper but since there isn’t any electricity on the site, it must have a battery or solar panels.  Camping vans are also allowed.

The dirt road to get there might be somewhat challenging, so visiting in a 4×4 vehicle or SUV is recommended.

Finca Viernes

Camp with a picturesque view of the mountains

🗺️ Distance from San Juan: 2 hours 15 minutes | Google Maps | Destination Website | ⛺ ⛺ Amenities: bathrooms, showers, on-site restaurant, glamping options

Finca Viernes is located in Utuado overlooking Caonillas lake, one of the popular sites in Utuado

The site has bathrooms, showers, and an on-site Puerto Rican food restaurant. If you don’t have camping equipment, you can stay at one of the glamping sites.

Finca Viernes also has a BBQ and a space for making bonfires – it’s great for a unique family night. There aren’t any on-site facilities for RVs.

El Yunque National Forest

Spend the night in the only tropical rainforest in the United States

🗺️ Distance from San Juan: 40 minutes | Google Maps | Destination Website | ⛺ Amenities: none

Camping in El Yunque National Forest is an outdoor adventure only for experienced campers. In El Yunque, you’ll find multiple camping sites for small or large groups.

The Pabellon, Molindero, and the Nursery are the easiest camping sites to reach from PR 191. But, if you’re feeling even more adventurous, you can camp in Tres Picachos, which is one of the highest peaks of the tropical rainforest.

None of these campgrounds have facilities so you have to bring everything for your stay. RVs aren’t allowed in these areas.

To camp in El Yunque, you have to request a camping permit and reservation through the forest service website. As of 2022, the camping services were temporarily suspended due to the pandemic, but the sites are preparing to open towards the end of the year.

👉 Local Tip: If you want to spend a night or two in the rainforest but still would like to have certain commodities, you can check out Hacienda Monterey, Villa Toston, and Rio Blanco Campgrounds.

Flamenco Beach

Stay at one of the top beaches in the world

(photo: Jeramey Lende / Shutterstock)

🗺️ Distance from Ceiba: 45 minutes by ferry | Google Maps | ⛺ Amenities: toilets and open showers

Flamenco Beach is located in one of Puerto Rico’s wildlife refuges on Culebra Island.

It’s one of the most popular beaches for its white soft sand and clear turquoise waters. That’s why those that can’t get enough of it choose to stay camping in this tropical paradise.

Flamenco Beach campground sports multiple areas for camping. The A area is usually for families. The B and C areas are for youngsters and party-loving people, and the D and E areas are usually quiet zones.

You can camp in Flamenco all year, and you can even go as a walk-in without any reservation. During the summer season, the campgrounds are crowded, so they aren’t ideal for a relaxing trip.

There aren’t any facilities besides open showers and bathrooms. RVs aren’t permitted either.

👉 Local Tip: Although it’s said the campgrounds are closed temporarily, multiple visitors in the past two years have camped in Flamenco Beach. If you can’t get in touch with the campground’s management and still want to camp, proceed under your own judgment and risk.

4 Tips for Camping in Puerto Rico

Tip #1 – Check Your Local Permits

Camping in Puerto Rico forests, nature reserves, and wildlife refuges is possible, but you need permits to do so. Contact the Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales (DRNA) in Puerto Rico to get them or pay a local company to do the paperwork for you.

Tip #2 – Choose the Right Season

The best time to visit Puerto Rico depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re camping by the beach, then make sure to visit between the summer and spring seasons for calm tides. Visiting the mountains during fall and winter will allow you to enjoy refreshing temperatures.

Tip #3 – Keep it Safe

Camping wherever in Puerto Rico is not recommended. Although Puerto Rico is generally safe, make sure to research everything about your campsite. Check reviews and if possible, camp together with other people.

Tip #4 – Bring the Right Gear

To make sure you’re bringing all the right things for your camping adventure, check out McKenna’s checklist of camping essentials!

FAQs About Camping in Puerto Rico

Can you camp anywhere in Puerto Rico?

Theoretically, travelers can’t camp anywhere they’d like in Puerto Rico. Generally, an official permit is necessary. That being said, many Puerto Ricans just camp wherever they feel like, often ignoring the official permit paperwork supposedly required to camp on state forests and refuges.

Is it safe to camp in Puerto Rico?

Camping is safe in Puerto Rico if travelers take the right security measures. Not all areas in Puerto Rico are ideal for camping. Visitors should always research the campground or stay at popular camping sites. They should also pack everything they need for camping and avoid bringing valuables.

Can I camp in El Yunque?

It’s possible to camp in El Yunque National Rainforest in the east of Puerto Rico. Campers can choose to stay between four official facilities located at  PR 191 and coordinate their visit through the forest service. But, there are plenty of haciendas around El Yunque that also offer camping facilities.

Want an Adventure? Beach Camping in Puerto Rico

It was the thunderous sound that startled me awake. I jolted upright in my sleeping bag, my head banging against the pole above my head. As I reached for my glasses tucked into the tent pocket, his hand gently grabbed my wrist and the red glow of his night-vision headlamp beamed across our enclosed cocoon.

“We’re OK, Sandy,” my boyfriend John said. “It’s just the waves.”

I grinned foolishly, relaxing as I breathed in the salty sea air that billowed through our tent flaps. It had been my idea to buy spur-of-the-moment tickets to San Juan, Puerto Rico, which, thanks to JetBlue, came in at under $300 a person from NYC.

And so now we found ourselves on a beach in the off-the-radar town of Añasco, Puerto Rico. Our challenge? Spend as little as possible. Our strategy? Spend nothing on accommodations. Our rule? Only one: Safety first.

With that set out, we rented the cheapest car we could find on the island, a Kia from U-Save Car Rental, which came in at $380 for eight days. With John behind the wheel and me acting as the human GPS, we zipped out of San Juan and headed towards the paradise of big-swell surfing in Rincon. But instead of stopping, I directed us south of the heady bohemia and towards the town of Añasco, which boasts only two mini-grocery stores, three bars, and one abandoned camping ground that could have dubbed as a set for Lost’s Dharma Initiative: La Playa de Tres Hermanos.

Upon entering the park, we were greeted by a man named Javier (an alleged park employee), who told me that the area was “muy seguro” (very safe) and “no te preocupes” (don’t worry). And yet, unsettingly, the sign that welcomed us said otherwise:

(Loosely translated, this sign reads: “Warning to the public: After 6 PM, the Agency is not responsible for property and security.)

Deciding to ignore the aged sign and trust Javier, I popped up the tent while John patrolled up and down the beach. Deeming it safe, we crawled in, and began calling Playa Tres Hermanos our home. Over the next few days, I swam with a racehorse who is exercised on the beach daily, met a 90-year-old woman who was born on the very sand we stood on, showered at a surf shop, and skinny-dipped every morning. Best of all? We were the only campers.

It was the ultimate beach camping vacation—and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for an adventurous (and cheap) getaway. Ready to start planning? Here are my five tips for success:

1.

Plan Before You Go

You can play almost everything about your beach vacation by ear, except a car—rental prices are seriously jacked up once you’re on the island. We searched around 10 different websites before finding U-Save to be the cheapest. I also recommend booking as far in advance as possible, as we saw prices hike up just over one week of searching. Also, if you go during peak season (over the holidays), be prepared to pay more for a vehicle.

Although all guidebooks and the National Park website in Puerto Rico suggest making reservations, you don’t have to at Tres Hermanos. There is no “check-in” or site management, and calling ahead to ask about reservations confirmed that none were needed. (If you’re calling for another campsite, good luck if you don’t speak Spanish. Try “acampar” and “reservacion.”)

2.

Safety First

Harking back to our one and only rule, we were vigilant about our surroundings at night. I would speak to the locals who came down during the day to form relationships, learn from them, and ask if the area was safe. We also had a lot of muscle (John), a loud voice (me), and a switchblade (don’t tell JetBlue) with us just in case. I’m pretty adventurous, ladies, but I don’t suggest camping alone.

3. W

hat to Bring—For Camping

A great tent and a sleeping bag are a must for this site. Unlike the maintained camping sites on the island, like Flamenco Beach in Culebra, you’ve got to bring your own stuff. For its small size, fast set-up for the camping neophyte, and feather-light weight, I recommend any of REI’s two-person, three-season, two-door tents.

And I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, headlamps are absolutely clutch for camping. They’re your guide to the bathroom (a.k.a. the woods), your reading lamp, and a strobe light all in one.

4.

What to Bring—For You

If you don’t think you need personal care essentials for a camping trip—think again. Baby wipes, bug spray, deodorant, sun block, and hair gel are key. The bugs on a beach at night are intense, not showering can lead to foul-smelling situations, and no one wants a sunburn on vacation. Usually the mix of bug spray, sunblock, and ocean water will cover up your sweat smell, but just in case, deodorant and scrunching up your wet hair into sweet curls can help you hold on to a touch of classiness (try Matrix Curl Boucles). Other than that, well, learn to embrace your inner dash of hippie.

5.

Where to Eat

Puerto Rico is famous for its roadside stalls that sell everything from rotisserie chicken with a side of yucca and seafood empanadas to fresh mango juice. These “kioscos” were integral to our cheap-eating strategy—each meal (which were all delicious) averaged about $2 per person. When it comes to water, buy giant jugs (more than you think you’ll need) from the NYC-esque bodegas.

I’ve always thought of Puerto Rico as part of the USA, but after spending time in little-known Añasco, I’m happy to report that I couldn’t have felt farther away from home.

Rico | Forward to the Unknown

To enter Puerto Rico (as well as the US), you must have a valid passport and an ESTA.

The current currency is the US dollar.

There are direct flights from London, Madrid or Frankfurt and you will land at Luis Muñoz Marin Airport, near San Juan. nine0003

To travel locally, the most convenient option is to rent a car. Public transport is available but unreliable in terms of schedules. You can also use taxis in the city and boats to travel to the islands.

Domestic flights also provide several destinations.

Budget: The average budget is about €15 for a meal and €100 for a hotel room in a small, family run establishment. The cheapest accommodation is undoubtedly camping, and there are “economy” stalls that offer meals for €5. nine0003

Health: As always, it is recommended to update your classic vaccinations. Prerequisite: protection from mosquitoes (in 2009 there was an epidemic of dengue and some cases of chikungunya). Look out for jellyfish, which are plentiful, and manchenilliers, shrines that release a toxin and can burn your skin.

Safety: Avoid camping in isolated areas due to possible theft and assault.

Climate and weather Puerto Rico

The climate is tropical, but maritime influence moderates the temperature, which stays between 25°C and 30°C throughout the year. January to April is the dry season and May to December is the rainy season with hurricanes occurring between August and October often causing significant damage. nine0003

The best time to visit the country is from January to March.

Things to do in Puerto Rico

You’ll probably start in San Juan, the commercial capital city. It also has a historic center that is five centuries old and whose colonial architecture is charming. You will marvel at the contrast between skyscrapers and white beaches where you can swim before taking in all the sights of this vibrant city.

Surrounded by coconut trees on the northeast coast, Playa Luquillo welcomes you with clear waters and white sand. Above the coast, you will discover the El Yunque Rainforest, where you can climb to the summit at just over 1,000 meters or walk along one of the 13 nature reserve trails, marveling at hundreds of species of trees and orchids, as well as frogs and parrots. nine0003

Ponce, the second city in the country, is worth a visit for its atmosphere, which you will enjoy in the central square with its colorful colonial architecture, cathedral, lion fountain and numerous museums. Don’t miss the restored village dedicated to Taino culture and the adjacent museum.

On the south coast, wild and warm, you will find magnificent beaches where the locals relax on weekends. There are far fewer tourists here than in the north. Also visit the Guanica nature reserve and the small town of San German, charming and very colorful. Nearby is a phosphorescent bay, where they admire an exceptional phenomenon – bioluminescence – real magic! nine0003

West coast surfers should head to Rincón, especially in the winter when rollerblading is possible on the beach. In summer, divers will enjoy diving with a simple mask and snorkel. Astronomy enthusiasts can visit the Arecibo Observatory.

In the heart of the mountains of the Cordillera Central, the traveler is offered steep terrain, as well as coffee plantations, a small patch of tropical forest, exotic fruit orchards and small villages immersed in greenery, farms lost in the jungle, where you will be offered a horseback ride or a hike in the San Cristobal canyon .
