Driving Directions to the Main Entrance to the Forest on Road PR 191 North in Rio Grande:

From the Airport/San Juan:

• Enter the Román Baldorioty de Castro highway (PR-26) toward the east.
• The highway will merge into highway PR-66 (toll road).
• Continue on PR-66 until it ends and turn right onto PR-3 East.
• Stay on PR-3 for approximately 6.3 km.
• After entering Rio Grande, you will turn right at the light onto Calle Principal (PR-955).
• Take your first left onto PR-191 to continue to the forest.
• Continue on 191 up the mountain until you reach the entrance sign for El Yunque National Forest.

Driving Direction to the South Entrance of the Forest on Road 191 South in Naguabo:

Please note that there was a landslide in the 1970’s that permanently disconnected the two parts of road 191.   To reach the southern side, you must drive all the way around the forest.

• Continue on Route 3 east and continue on to Highway 53 (toll road)
• Take the exit for Route 31 west (exit #22 for Rio Blanco).
• Follow Route 31 to Route 191.

Estas montañas son cuna de algunas de las mejores oportunidades de recreación en la isla. Se puede llegar a torres de observación, cascadas, al bosque de nubes y ríos desde el Area Recreativa La Mina. 

Puede visitar El Yunque durante todo el año, excepto el 25 de diciembre, o durante días donde las condiciones del tiempo no lo permitan, por su seguridad.   

Located on the Caribbean Island of Puerto Rico, the El Yunque National Forest is the sole tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. It differs significantly from all the other U.S. National Forests because of its year-round tropical climate and immense biodiversity. 

These mountains are home to some of the best recreation opportunities on the island. Observation towers, waterfalls, the cloud forest and refreshing rivers are all accessible from the La Mina Recreation Area. 

El Yunque is a year round destination. The forest is closed on December 25th and during extreme weather or other significant natural events.

Notifications and Alerts

• El Yunque main recreational areas in Río Grande will reopen to the public starting Monday, October 10, 2022. This is a partial opening and not all trails will be available. The open trails in the corridor of PR 191 north will be: Mt. Britton, Mt. Britton Spur, La Roca, Los Picachos, La Coca (until the second creek), Caimitillo and Juan Diego. Recreational areas that will reopen are the Yokahú Tower, Baño Grande and Baño de Oro. 

   

  The El Toro trail is now open to the public from the trailhead to El Toro Peak. Currently, the only access to the trail is through the PR186 road (Río Grande – Canóvanas), using the 956 as a detour, due to the construction in the area.    

   

  The restrooms at Palo Colorado Station such as the store operated by Para la Naturaleza and the interpretive tours offered by this organization are available.   

   

  The Palma de Sierra picnic area and food concessionaire are open.     

  El Portal de El Yunque Visitor Center is also open from 9am-5pm.  

   

  Las áreas recreativas principales de El Yunque, en Río Grande, reabrirán al público, a partir del lunes, 10 de octubre de 2022. La apertura es parcial; no todas las veredas estarán disponibles. Las veredas que estarán abiertas en el corredor de la PR 191 norte son: Mt. Britton, Mt. Britton Spur, La Roca, Los Picachos, La Coca (hasta el segundo arroyo), Caimitillo y Juan Diego. Igualmente, reabrirán áreas recreativas como: Torre Yokahú, Baño Grande y Baño de Oro.

   

  La vereda El Toro ya está abierta al público desde el punto de comienzo hasta Pico El Toro. El único acceso a la vereda, actualmente, es a través de la carretera PR186 (Río Grande – Canóvanas), tomando el desvío por la PR 956, debido a trabajos de construcción en el área.       

   

  Los baños de la estación Palo Colorado, al igual que la tiendita operada por Para la Naturaleza y los recorridos interpretativos que ofrece esta organización estarán disponibles.      

  El área de picnic Palma de Sierra y el concesionario de comida están abiertos.   

   

  El centro de visitantes El Portal de El Yunque también estára abierto de 9am-5pm.

  • Solo los poseedores de boletos válidos tendrán acceso al Área Recreativa comenzando el 20 de diciembre de 2021.
  • Los boletos estarán disponibles para los períodos de la mañana o de la tarde.
  • Aquellos que tengan boletos programados para acceder al Área Recreativa durante el horario de la mañana solo podrán ingresar entre las 8:00 a.m. (0800) y las 1100 a.m. (1100).
  • Aquellos que tengan boletos programados para acceder al Área Recreativa durante el horario de la tarde solo podrán ingresar entre las 11:00 a. m. (1100) y 2:00 p.m. (1500).

Puerto Rico is a wonderful island in the Caribbean. The magic word “Caribbean” immediately conjures up a snow-white beach, palm trees on the shore and the turquoise expanse of the sea. – Anastasia, what is special about Puerto Rico?

-Discovered by the Spaniards, the island is administered by the United States and is a fusion of American, Spanish, African and Native American cultures. On the one hand, this ensures security and order, on the other hand, it gives Puerto Rico an indescribable flavor, so appreciated by tourists. Russians are treated very well here, since the inhabitants of the island, for objective reasons, remained aloof from the Cold War: they treat Russia kindly and with great curiosity.

-When does the swimming season open on the island?

– Puerto Rico is a year-round beach holiday destination. Even in Miami it is cold to swim in February, but here the water temperature is always above +25°C. In January it is +25°C, by August it rises to +28°C, and in December it drops to +27°C. This is the ideal temperature for swimming. Tourists from all over the world come to relax on local beaches – and there are more than 250 of them.

– What do you have in your arsenal besides beaches and the sea?

– There is a huge number of cultural and historical sights, carefully preserved by the local intelligentsia and the government. I have been living on the island for more than 15 years, but I am constantly discovering something new. San Juan is not only the oldest city in Puerto Rico, but also the oldest city founded by Europeans in the United States. It’s even older than St. Augustine, Florida. This is a real open-air museum, keeping 500 years of history only from the time of Christopher Columbus.

-Are there any unique natural masterpieces?

-Puerto Rico is just a magnificent nature. Here are such rare natural formations as bays with luminescent water and a dry cactus forest. Tourists are organized enchanting night kayaking trips through the bays with glowing water and tours through the rainforests – this is a real adventure! This is only possible in Puerto Rico. Natural hits are the El Yunque National Reserve and the Orchid and Helicon Garden.

-How safe is the country?

– American laws here. Solo travelers can safely rent a car and drive around the island – the roads are orderly, unlike many islands in the Caribbean. The country has very friendly and benevolent people who, if necessary, will always provide assistance.

-Tourism and shopping are almost parallel concepts. Does it make sense to go shopping in Puerto Rico?

-The island is often called the Caribbean capital of shopping – in San Juan there are huge modern shopping centers, where even residents of the surrounding islands come to shop. Here is the “Plaza Las Americas” – the largest shopping center in the Caribbean.

-Can Puerto Rico be called a “delicious” country?

– Of course! There are national gastronomic “highlights” here, which were inherited from the Taino Indians, who once inhabited the island. Tainian, African and Spanish culinary traditions, over which local lovers of good food conjured for five centuries, gave the island its unique gastronomic “I”. It has been proven in practice that Russians like the local cuisine, which, by the way, is characterized by the use of a large number of roots. This is the local highlight. You can buy great coffee on the island. At one time, it was even delivered to the Vatican.

-What can you do in your free time from beaches and excursions?

-There is a very rich musical life here. The assortment has everything – salsa, merengue, variety, classic. International classical music festivals are regularly held. Some of them last for 5-6 weeks! Spivakov and Olga Kern performed in Puerto Rico. Frequent guests on the island are Shakira, Madonna, Ricky Martin and other world stars.

-Where do tourists come from and why?

-Most tourists come from the USA. In recent years, more and more Canadians and Europeans.
