Puerto Rico and Spain will be facing each other for the first time in history on August 15, 2012. The venue is the Estadio Juan Ramon Loubriel located in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

The stadium is also the home of the Puerto Rico Islanders, which is part of the North American Soccer League or NASL. What can be expected in this friendly match of historical significance?

Before delving into that topic, some information about the rivals of this friendly match is in order.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is an island known for baseball, basketball and volleyball. It is also known for boxing.

According to the FIFA/Coca-Cola World ranking, the island currently ranks in 138th place with 210 points in world football. Puerto Rico ranks in 19th place on the CONCACAF FIFA/Coca Cola scale.

FIFA reports that football is in its early stages in Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rico Islanders were founded in 2003 and have made significant progress within the NASL.

At the present time, the Islanders are in third place within the NASL rankings, behind the San Antonio Scorpions and the Tampa Bay Rowdies. They also made history with their participation in the CONCACAF Champions League; they went all the way to the semifinals in 2009.

Puerto Rico is beginning to take football seriously. According to FIFA, Puerto Rico is beginning to construct a building, which will serve to train future generations of footballers.

During my trip to Puerto Rico, I remember seeing people in Plaza  Las Americas (a San Juan shopping mall) purchasing souvenirs of the Puerto Rico Islanders. The same thing happened at Plaza del Caribe, which is a shopping mall in Ponce.

Spain

This is the first trip by the Spanish National Football team to Puerto Rico for a friendly match. Spain has a long history of football with teams such as FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Club Deportivo La Coruna and Athletic Club Bilbao.

Spain is also known for its personalities such as Cesc Fabregas, Gerard Pique, Iker Casillas, and Fernando Torres. It is also home to one of the biggest rivalries of La Liga: FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Spain won three consecutive times which were the 2008, 2012 Euro, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Spain was the winner of the 1964 Euro Cup after defeating the Soviet Union (now Russia).

Spain, at the present time, ranks in first place with 1,605 points on the FIFA/Coca-Cola Ranking scale. It also ranked in second place with 84,186 points on the UEFA Country Coefficient scale for 2011-2012.

What’s expected?

Puerto Rico is going to be in the history books of world football. Regardless of who wins or loses, it is great that these two teams are coming together in a place where football is beginning to become popular.

We should savor and enjoy the moment. My best wishes to the B/R readers until next time.

SYDNEY (Australia) – Puerto Rico won their first game at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 with a resounding win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, 82-58.

They started out on fire with 31 points in the first quarter, the most ever by the team in a Women’s World Cup. They ended with the most three-pointers made by Puerto Rico as well with 7 in total.

It was definitely a historic game not only for Puerto Rico, but also for their star veteran Arella Guirantes who recorded 26 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists in the competition opener. The performance was good enough for an EFF rating of 36, a feat which only one player in the two recent World Cups has achieved.

This was also the first time since 1994 when assists and rebounds were recorded in the Women’s World Cup that a player recorded at least 25 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists in a game. The last player to record a triple double at the World Cup was Erika Dobrovicova (24-10-10) in 1994 during Slovak Republic vs Spain.

The Puerto Rican team are in its second Women’s World Cup in a row and are battling in Group A.

The team has begun this challenge during a tumultuous time. They will be anxious for to keep the momentum of the first game going, but part of their heart and spirit will go out to their island, which has recently been hit by Hurricane Fiona.

The storm moved strongly through the Caribbean region with its heavy rains which led to floods and generated destruction to electrical services across the country leaving most without power.

The players from the national team sent a message of encouragement to their nation from Sydney.

“Here (in Sydney) we are keeping in touch. I hope all is well, you are always in our prayers. We send you a big hug and are with you always,” said the captain of the national squad, Pamela Rosado, through the Puerto Rico Basketball Federation’s social media.

“I know that you are going through a tough time…We’ve been through this before, so I know everyone in the community will lean on each other and help each other out. Stay safe,” guard Jennifer O’Neill said.

“We are praying for you, and are following you just as you follow us. Take care, we love you,” added Isalys Quiñones, among several of the messages expressed by some of the members of the campus.

After this win against their first opponent, Puerto Rico are now in a favorable position to advance to the Quarter-Finals and give all their people a glimpse of joy in the midst of a difficult situation.

For the rest of the Group Phase in Australia, Puerto Rico will continue their journey in Group A facing the United States (September 23), Belgium (24), China (26) and Korea (27).

Group B hosts France, Serbia, Japan, Mali, Canada and Australia. The top four teams from each group will advance to the Quarter-finals.

Whatever the final results will be, there is one certainty and which is that the island will continue to feel proud of their women’s national team that in the recent past has left the country on a high standard. From 2018 to now, their achievements include two gold medals in the Women’s Centrobasket Championship, a fourth place and a silver medal in the Women’s FIBA AmeriCup, participation in the 2018 FIBA Women’s World Cup, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and again in this 2022 World Cup.

On June 11, a referendum was held in Puerto Rico, a dependent territory of the United States, in which 97% of voters voted in favor of calling on the United States to recognize Puerto Rico as a new state of the United States. Puerto Rico is an island in the Caribbean with an area of 9thousand square kilometers, where 3.4 million people live. The island came under US control in 1898. Then, during one of the wars between the superpowers, the growing strength of the United States defeated Spain.

On June 11, Puerto Rico, a US dependency, held a referendum in which 97% of voters voted to call on the US Congress to recognize Puerto Rico as a new US state. Puerto Rico is an island in the Caribbean Sea with an area of 9 thousand square kilometers, where 3.4 million people live. This island came under US control in 1898 year. Then, during one of the wars between the superpowers, the growing US defeated Spain. After the war of 1898, Spain completely abandoned its three colonies – Guam, the Philippines and Puerto Rico – in favor of the United States, and Cuba became an independent state.

In 1946, the United States recognized the independence of the Philippines. In turn, the Pacific island of Guam and Puerto Rico never gained independence. Puerto Rico’s status is a US-administered unincorporated territory. In a 2017 referendum, Puerto Ricans had to choose the future status of the island: become a new, full US state, maintain the current status, or become a fully independent state.

Although 97% of the referendum participants voted for full incorporation in the United States, voter turnout was very low, with only 23% of Puerto Ricans participating in the referendum.

Since Puerto Rico is not incorporated in the United States, but is under the control of the Congress of this country, the Constitution and most laws of the United States do not have force on the territory of the island. The decision on the status of Puerto Rico can legally be made solely by the US Congress. All Puerto Ricans have dual citizenship of Puerto Rico and the United States. But as long as Puerto Ricans do not move to any state, but live on their island, they do not have the right to participate in the US presidential elections, and in Congress, the representatives of Puerto Rico have only the status of observers.

Close political, monetary, economic and military ties with the United States did not contribute to the economic prosperity of Puerto Rico. Like Latvia after joining the EU, Puerto Rico in the last 25 years has faced a massive migration of the working population, especially young people, who rushed to the United States. Those who did not leave the island had to maintain too much local government and social infrastructure. As a result, in 2015, Puerto Rico was unable to pay off its debts and experienced bankruptcy (default). Now in Puerto Rico there is an external – appointed by the US Congress – financial management.

Putting the issue of the future status of Puerto Rico on the agenda of the US Congress will have certain domestic and foreign policy implications.

Internally: in the status of a full state, a territory wants to join the United States, the majority of whose inhabitants speak only Spanish and where the official two official languages are Spanish and English. The issue of the status of Puerto Rico is now beneficial for Trump’s opponents – the Democrats. Both Trump and many of the ruling Republicans have spoken out against the growing influence of the Hispanic minority (the so-called Latinos) in America. By raising the issue of Puerto Rico, this can be beautifully and unobtrusively reminded everyone once again.

From a foreign policy point of view, the incorporation of a UN-recognized American colony into the United States will give rise to arguments about the aggressive intentions of the United States towards Latin America and will contribute to the strengthening of anti-Americanism in the world, especially in Latin America.

In turn, even discussions about the incorporation of Puerto Rico into the United States, of course, are used by Russia to draw attention to similarities with the incorporation of Crimea into the Russian Federation.

However, in any case, the results of the Puerto Rican referendum are inconclusive, and therefore, in all likelihood, the US Congress will once again postpone the question of the state status of Puerto Rico to the distant future.
