I wanted to share my experience regarding supervisor Javier from the Palacio location. We were moved for the Convento site to the Palacio site due to torn sheets, unswept under beds with leftover toys from previous dwellers, malfunctioning air conditioning, and cockroaches presence in our room. Helen was kind and personally assisted us in our room transitions. We were advised to obtain breakfast vouchers and met Javier at the front desk. Javier, to say the least, is rude and unfriendly. He was rolling his eyes and just appeared unwilling to assist. He was argumentative about the fact that the food vouchers were not issued by Helen. Javier pointed at my 3 year old son and sarcastically asked if he is going to eat as well insinuating that he should not be eating. Javier should not be dealing with customers as he does not know what customer service means.

I love El Convento. Old world with modern comforts. Elegant and great staff. Beautiful location as well.

Pros:The staff was awesome!! Very comfy beds and a very good location!

Cons:The hotel is very old which is cool, but it need some upgrade.

Pros:The Hotel Staff is bilingual, loves travelers, will always say hello, will help you find your way around, will feed you until you are stuffed, will make you feel like you are in a family home. This location is across the street from one of the oldest Catholic Cathedrals in North America. Centrally located in Old San Juan for UBER rides, two ancient forts and fabulous restaurants within a block or two. Police are everywhere protecting your safety.

Cons:Main elevator kept breaking down with immediate repair by local Contracted company. Any baggage moves handled by Hotel. They helped us totally through this minor problem.

Pros:Beautiful hotel, wonderful hosts, located in an old world city.

Pros:Every staff interaction was terrific. Friendly, eager, helpful, welcoming. Front desk, restaurant (tapas bar, food and staff shine!) History just walks the halls with you! The rooftop pool and hot tub with harbor view at sunset was something special. Then we left a coat behind, and discovered it after our cruise ship left, they packed it up and Shipped it home.

Cons:Having to leave so soon. Should have booked a much longer stay!

Pros:The attention to detail and quality was evident in the furnishings and finishes of the hotel. The staff as courteous and responsive and the daily guest wine and cheese reception was a nice touch. It’s location is hard to beat and the hotel blends well into the historical city of Old San Juan.

Cons:There is a lot of traffic directly outside. Not good for early check in.

Pros:I liked everything. The staff was incredibly accommodating. The hotel itself was amazing and exactly what I wanted, which was a place with character and charm. Do yourself a favor and stay here.

Pros:It’s a historic building with an invaluable art collection.

Cons:Their claim to have a pool is ludicrous.

Design:

One of the world’s most unique hotels, Hotel El Convento, located in Old San Juan, has been totally renovated and restored so that travelers can stay in a medieval walled city that dates back to the Spanish conquest, so superbly refurbished that it is now a destination.

 

The building’s characteristic Spanish features were an enormous open interior courtyard framed by tiered balconies and arched corridors. Nuns’ cells were tiny rooms with single beds and straw mattresses. The spacious chapel had a domed ceiling.

On Cristo Street, the convent was (and still is) adjacent to the Plaza of the Nuns, the city’s second oldest park. Across the street is San Juan Cathedral, built in 1521 of clay, one-story with a thatched roof, destroyed by a hurricane and rebuilt starting in 1540. The Western Hemisphere’s oldest cathedral, it is one of the few examples of medieval architecture remaining in the New World.

In 1959, under Operation Bootstrap, Robert Frederick Woolworth, heir to the Woolworth fortune, purchased the convent property from the Archdiocese of San Juan for $250,000 and transformed it into a deluxe hotel named El Convento. It would spur the development of business, tourism and employment in Old San Juan.

The hotel has returned to its original name, Hotel El Convento. It opened in January 1997, 35 years after the original El Convento Hotel and was immediately chosen by CONDE NAST TRAVELER as one of the 23 best new hotels of the world. The reopening of the hotel marked the 346th anniversary of the convent site, a national historic landmark.

 

In recent years, the readers of both CONDE NAST TRAVELER and TRAVEL & LEISURE again voted El Convento one of the world’s best places to stay. In 2002, the hotel was featured in the May issue of Architectural Digest, which showcased the “celestial spirit” of this luxury landmark.  

 

Hotel El Convento is a proud member of the Historic Hotels of America and of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, the only hotel to hold these distinctions in Puerto Rico.
