Magical Tropical Wedding
Truly, we could not be happier with El Convento as the venue for our cocktail party and wedding. All of our guests commented repeatedly that the food was delicious, the champagne was excellent and the service was top notch. I have personally never had better food at an event, it was incredible. The servers made sure there was never an empty glass, and the bartenders got to know many peoples personal drink preference. It was a spectacular event and I am so so so incredibly grateful.

Fantastic service for our wedding
My husband and I loved everything about our wedding at El Convento. The staff was very attentive and helpful throughout the night. The food was delicious and our signature cocktails were exactly how we wanted them. Nelia was the best! She was very accommodating and assisted us every step of the way. Truly grateful and appreciative to the staff at El Convento for everything.

Fabulous venue!
My daughter got married the Fourth of July weekend. The wedding venue was very elegant and everything was very well coordinated. Nelia Sanchez was our coordinator at hotel El Convento and she was always very attentive and responsive to our MANY emails. In the middle of Old San Juan, Hotel El Convento makes the perfect wedding destination. All guests loved the venue.

Demographics

San Juan is the most populated city in Puerto Rico. From 1899 to 1950 the municipality of San Juan did not include the Río Piedras area. For this reason, population and area data refer only to the districts (barrios) of Antigo San Juan (same as Old San Juan) and Santurce. nine0015

The old municipality of Río Piedras was the 3rd largest city in Puerto Rico in terms of population at the time of its incorporation in 1951. Its strategic location south of the capital made it a link to all of the island’s major transportation routes and a geographic gateway to San Juan, which are the factors that caused the dramatic growth of the city in the 20th century.

San Juan is at 18. 45, -66.066667 and is located on the northeast coast of Puerto Rico. It lies south of the Atlantic Ocean, north of Guaynabo and Trujillo Alto, east of Bayamon and west of Carolina. The city covers an area of 199.2 km, of which 75.4 km is water. Most of San Juan’s water area consists of San Juan Harbor and two natural lagoons, the Condado Lagoon and the San Jose Lagoon.

During the Spanish colonization, most of the city’s population lived in what is now known as Old San Juan. This area is on the western half of a small island called Isleta de San Juan, which is connected to the larger island by two bridges and a causeway. The islet, covering an area of 122 km, also contains the Puerta de Tierra working-class neighborhood and most of Puerto Rico’s central government buildings, including the Puerto Rico Capitol. The main inner city is characterized by narrow cobblestone streets and picturesque buildings from colonial times, some dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. The old city districts are surrounded by massive walls, several defenses and notable forts: the 16th century Fort San Felipe del Morro and the 17th century Fort San Cristobal, as well as El Palacio de Santa Catalina, also known as La Fortaleza, which serves as the governor’s mansion. Other buildings of interest include the Ayuntamiento or Alcalda (town hall), the church of St. Joseph (1523) and nearby hotel Hotel El Convento, former home of the Ponce de Leon family, known as Casa Blanca (White House), Tapia Theater, former Spanish barracks (now the Ballach Museum), La Princesa (former municipal prison, now a historical museum ) and the municipal cemetery of St. Mary Magdalene de Pazzi, located just outside the city walls. The pulpit of St. John the Baptist (construction began in the 1520s) is also located in Old San Juan. There is the tomb of the Spanish explorer and founder of the colony, Juan Ponce de Leon.
