La Concha

Where the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel melds Old Havana, mid-century, and contemporary design hotel, La Concha is all mid-century beach chic re-imagined for the 21^st century.

Right on Ashford Avenue in the heart of San Juan’s ‘it’ Condado neighborhood with expansive beach front, La Concha is one of the island’s iconic hotels, dating back to the heyday of Puerto Rico as a ‘jet set’ destination.

Its namesake is its standout feature: a gigantic, seashell-shaped ‘floating restaurant’ at the edge of the sea. Not only a marvel of engineering and design, being inside the ‘shell’ space makes any meal memorable and a special event like a wedding, absolutely epic.

The curves of the giant shell feature are unmistakably from the mid-century school of modernism. The architects continued tropical modernist features throughout the property, in the form of curves and breezeways, an open lobby and seamless transitions between indoors and outdoors, even a concrete façade that filters sunlight to create patterns mirrored indoors.

Also benefitting from a recent renovation, La Concha has kept its mid-century bones and added ocean-inspired hues and beach-inspired textures, lounges and patios kept throbbing with electronic dance music by local DJ’s, resulting in a completely modern urban beach resort, nightlife destination, and ‘Latino Chic’ lifestyle in a stylish setting few modern hotel builds can match.

O:LV Fifty Five

Around the corner in San Juan’s chic Condado neighborhood from La Concha, O:LV Fifty Five is a jewel of a boutique hotel where Old Hollywood glamour meets modern design hotel.

Since it’s recent opening, it has made the lists proclaiming “Top Places to Travel”, “Best New Hotels”, and “Finest Hotels” among others.

Get Out of Town is a series where we highlight easy getaways from Boston. These may be a perfect bitesize weekend trip or a splurge worthy weeklong escape. But the main criteria are that the destination is both convenient to access and offers visitors an experience that surprises and delights. For our first edition, we are headed to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Why visit San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan is a destination that is perennially popular with Bostonians due to the many flight options from Logan. And while many of us may think of it as a bachelor/bachelorette party stop, there is so much more to the city. Old San Juan is home to 15^th century architecture and stunning hole-in-the-wall restaurants, outdoor activities abound from bioluminescence bays to rainforests to world class beaches, all within a stone’s throw from the airport. So, if you are looking for an affordable, quick trip to soak up some culture along with some vitamin D, San Juan is worth putting on the list while the weather is still cold and damp here in Boston.

Getting there

Puerto Rico is only four hours away on one of the many nonstop routes from Logan. JetBlue, Spirit and Delta all offer nonstop routes. And if you are strategic with the dates over the next few weeks there are options for around $300 roundtrip! Also, don’t forget that Puerto Rico is a part of the United States, so no passport required!

What to do and where to stay

In early 2020, the famous El San Juan Hotel completed a $125 million renovation and reemerged as the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel. And what this means is that guests can use and redeem Accor Live Limitless points on visits now! So, keep this in mind as many still do not realize that Accor bought Fairmont Hotels in 2016.

This beachfront hotel offers guests everything you would expect from a Fairmont hotel, with some Caribbean flair. And the concierge will also book you all the fun experiences that showcase the best of Puerto Rico like zip lining, boat rides, water spots and even island hopping via helicopter.
