For an ordinary inhabitant of our country, the word “crab” is mainly associated with a summer vacation by the sea and with a delicious winter salad, which rarely appears on the tables, because real crab meat, although tasty, is very expensive. But it may be otherwise, says Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the National Scientific Center for Marine Biology. A.V. Zhirmunsky of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (NNTsMB FEB RAS, Vladivostok) Igor DOLMATOV.

– Not only crabs, but also molluscs, trepangs and other seafood, including algae, have great nutritional value for the human body, and in the West, scientists are seriously concerned about their breeding: they study genetics, crossbreed, use modern technologies to obtain new varieties and breeds. In Russia, practically no one is engaged in marine aquaculture, the scientist said. “Meanwhile, here, in the Far East, many enterprising people try to breed, for example, trepangs or mollusks and face serious problems, because there is a lot of unknown here.

The project “Development of modern approaches to the creation of technologies for the sustainable cultivation and reproduction of valuable marine hydrobionts”, carried out under the leadership of Igor Dolmatov, was supported in 2021 by a grant from the Russian Science Foundation under the event “Conducting research by world-class scientific laboratories as part of the implementation of the priorities of scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation “. Then Doctor of Biological Sciences Igor Dolmatov served as head of the laboratory of comparative cytology at the NSCMB FEB RAS.

Hydrobionts are, literally, “aquatic organisms”, that is, animals that live in water. Far Eastern scientists have been passionate about this topic for a long time: the Russian Science Foundation has been supporting their research since 2014. Then the Far Eastern Federal University received a grant. Igor Dolmatov was the head of one of the areas related to aquaculture. During the years of work on a university grant, ecologist Sergey Maslennikov, a partner in the project, created a small station for breeding marine life at the institute. It turned out that it is technologically very difficult – to spawn adult animals, to receive and feed larvae. Everything had to be learned by doing. If, say, calves first feed on their mother’s milk, and then eat almost the same as adults, the situation with nutrition is much more complicated for ocean dwellers. King crab larvae go through several stages of development. That is, the king crab has five different larvae. At the same time, each has its own characteristics and preferences in nutrition. At first they only swim, then they settle, after which they turn into small crabs. Several stages of larvae are also found in trepangs – sea cucumbers, as they are also called. And at each stage of development they need different feeds, microalgae. And you can’t buy them in a pet store – you need to select and “collect”, adding useful components in order to create optimal conditions for growth and development.

One of the main goals of the project, supported by the current RSF grant, is to study the biological properties of marine invertebrates, which are very useful for humans in terms of eating them. The project explores a wide range of species that are already cultivated or promising for artificial cultivation: sea cucumbers (holothurians), sea urchins, bivalves, decapods… A wide range of modern morphological, biochemical, pharmacological and molecular genetic methods are used to study their properties. According to the scientist, there are no problems with the equipment, since the NSCMB FEB RAS is well equipped. A branch of the NSCMB Primorsky Oceanarium plays an important role in the experiments. Field experiments and testing of technological chains are carried out in its laboratories and aquariums. In addition, Primorsky Aquarium specialists are working on growing live food for larvae – various types of microalgae and small invertebrates.

Ultimately, in addition to fundamental knowledge about the nature of hydrobionts, technologies for growing marine life for use in mariculture farms will be developed. Moreover, the technologies are not general, but adapted to local conditions, that is, taking into account the hydrological, climatic and environmental features of the water area.

– One of the areas of our scientific work is the study of the lipidoma of marine organisms, it is almost not studied, – says Igor Dolmatov. – Lipids are a diverse class of organic molecules that, together with proteins and carbohydrates, are the main components of all living things. Using high-performance liquid chromatography, supercritical fluid chromatography, and high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry, the complete lipidome of trepang, king crabs, and mitten crabs was deciphered for the first time. And here is what is interesting and revealing. We compared trepangs that lived two years on artificial feeding with their “wild” peers. It turned out that “artificial” and “savage” differ in lipid composition as if they were two different species, so much influence the conditions of detention and nutrition on the biochemical composition of the body. In order to make it easier for the production workers to make their task easier, we must ultimately draw up a kind of “terms of reference”, what exactly (point by point) they need to do in order to grow an abundant and most useful “harvest” in terms of its properties.

A separate topic is the study of microalgae and the development of technologies for their industrial cultivation, the creation of promising feed and biologically active additives on their basis.

Igor Yuryevich himself has long been engaged in a comparative analysis of the mechanisms of formation of internal organs in echinoderms during various types of regeneration. Sea cucumbers (in particular, trepang) and several species of sea lilies are being studied. Unlike the crab, the trepang does not have a hard shell, so during its life it is often attacked by predators, and the ability to restore lost body parts and organs helps it to more successfully resist the aggressive external environment. Simply put, it often saves lives.

– Amazing things are happening! – the scientist says with enthusiasm. – There are sea lilies that restore internal organs in a matter of days. The body of these animals consists of a cup, in which all the insides are located. That is to say, freely available. When attacked by predatory fish, sea lilies can lose their entire gut, and after four days a new gut is already functioning. If some of the sea cucumbers are bitten off by a predator, the rest is restored. And there are many questions that still remain unanswered. And if a predator bites off half, the other half will survive? Will it regrow damaged or lost organs? How fast is regeneration, how does it change with the age of the echinoderm? How and why did regeneration mechanisms arise, why were they lost by mammals, in particular, by humans, in the course of evolution? All these questions are the subject of consideration of fundamental science.

In the 1990s, businessmen from Southeast Asia came to us, they offered to breed trepang like potatoes: take an animal, divide it into three parts and grow a whole trepang from each piece. I was already dealing with this topic. I had to upset them, to say that the middle part would not regenerate, it would simply die. Why is that? This is also the subject of research.
Another interesting feature of echinoderms is the ability to transdifferentiate. This is the process of transformation of some specialized cells into cells of another type. In vertebrates, transdifferentiation is extremely rare. And it is very difficult for them to launch it. The Nobel Prize was awarded in 2012 for developing a method for converting skin cells (fibroblasts) into stem-like cells (induced pluripotent stem cells), from which new tissues and organs can be grown. And in many species of echinoderms, transdifferentiation is a natural process. Thanks to him, sea lilies and holothurians “grow” their lost tissues without problems. By understanding which genes are involved in transdifferentiation in echinoderms, we may be able to trigger a similar process of regeneration in vertebrates, that is, to provoke a directed change in the functioning of the cell genome, which is necessary to transform it into either a stem cell or a cell of another tissue. Why not? After all, we once had a common ancestor with echinoderms. Not so long ago, only 600 million years ago. True, comparing genomes is a very difficult task. In the course of evolution, some genes change, some fall out, some new ones appear, their function changes. There are genes that are similar in humans and the starfish, but the star has three such genes, and the human has five. It is difficult to compare – man has gone too far from echinoderms along the steps of evolution.

Nevertheless, studies of the mechanisms of cell regeneration and transformation in echinoderms not only allow solving fundamental problems of developmental biology, but can also be of practical importance, leading to the development of new approaches to enhancing regeneration in mammals and obtaining cellular material for biomedical purposes.

A serious problem with which the breeding of crabs is associated is their aggressive behavior and even cannibalism at different stages of development. These marine inhabitants, no matter how you feed them, without any hesitation, eat everyone who moves nearby, including their own children. And even if the larvae at different stages of development are sorted into different baths, all the same, stronger individuals soon begin to prey on weaker ones. That is their nature. A group of researchers headed by Vyacheslav Dyachuk, one of the main co-executors of the grant, is studying the possibilities of influencing the endocrine system of crustaceans to correct their behavioral activity and the role of hormones (ecdysone, serotonin and others) involved in the regulation of growth, metamorphosis and development of larvae in this behavior. Recommendations for aquaculture farms are also being developed.

Finally, another area of ​​the project is related to the study of pathogens that cause a number of diseases in cultivated marine life, with prevention and treatment. If a whole science deals with diseases of domestic and farm animals – veterinary medicine, then no one knows how to treat the king crab. Doesn’t know yet. Research by Far Eastern scientists is changing this situation.

A prerequisite for the grant is co-financing from firms interested in the results of the study. And such firms already exist. LLC “Antey” participates in this project. This is a large company specializing in the extraction of marine resources, primarily fish and crabs. In addition, she is engaged in mariculture, growing such delicacies as scallop, oysters, trepang. It is clear that businessmen do not care how the crab develops and what is sick, whether it regenerates or not, it is important for them that the money invested gives a result. In particular, LLC “Antey” is interested in increasing the number of king crab. Within the framework of the grant, work is underway to develop technologies for obtaining large quantities of crab fry. This is a “seed material”, its release into the sea will contribute to an increase in the number of king crab in Russian waters. The integrated approach that scientists use in this large project, supported by the Russian Science Foundation, not only improves existing technologies and increases the productivity of mariculture farms, but also creates the necessary scientific groundwork for the further development of mariculture in Russia.

– The presence of the RSF is also a moral support for scientists, not only financial, – says Igor Dolmatov. – Despite the fact that the terms of the grant are quite strict, it stimulates scientific activity and contributes to the development of many areas. Some studies without the support of the Foundation would be simply impossible to carry out. There is room for work. For example, our grant is initially given for four years and, if all goes well, it is extended for another three years. The Foundation contributes to maintaining the creative potential of scientists and the development of science in Russia. This is especially valuable for young scientists – the RSF has many areas of support for them. The fund works clearly, the entire site is filled with explanations. They conduct seminars via Skype, Zoom. In a word, we should be glad that we have such funds.

– Don’t you feel isolated there, on the edge of the country? – I ask at the end of the conversation.

– Personally, I don’t feel it, – replies Igor Yurievich. Our work is international. We are not the only ones dealing with this problem. Although my personal topic related to regeneration in echinoderms is quite rare. We have groups researching regeneration in sea cucumbers in China and Puerto Rico. We read each other’s articles. Conferences, letters, communication… Foreign expeditions. I went to Vietnam for ten years, worked there for 2-3 months at the Institute of Oceanography. And Germans, Americans, Norwegians conducted research next to me … They send me articles on my subject for reviews. We have common tasks, common goals. In a word, as a scientist, I do not consider myself cut off from the world at all.

Over the past two seasons, the League followed the duel of two Greek coaches: army soldier Dimitris Itoudis. The head coach of UNICS emerged victorious from the head-to-head series in the 2018/19 regular season – for the first time in a long time, CSKA suffered 2 defeats in a season from one team.

In the summer, both clubs decided to develop the theme of the Greek confrontation. UNICS signed Olympiacos defender Vangelis Mantzaris, CSKA brought center Kosta Koufos from the NBA to Europe. Both players will certainly be in the first roles in their teams, and the outcome of the matches will largely depend on their actions in the personal meetings of these clubs. So what will be the score of the duel UNICS – CSKA this season?

Identity exchange: Zenit – Khimki

Time and place: December 9, SIBUR Arena (St. signing 11 new basketball players. Sergei Karasev did not stay in St. Petersburg either – the forward accepted Khimki’s offer, changing his club registration for the first time since 2016. Together with Karasev, Evgeny Valiev and Andrey Desyatnikov moved to the Moscow region.

Andrei Zubkov followed in the opposite direction. It is likely that it is the transition to Zenit that will help the Russian striker to fully open up and become one of the leaders of Joan Plaza’s team.

The first meeting between Zenit and Khimki, two Euroleague teams, in the VTB League will take place in early December. Zenit traditionally plays powerfully at the home SIBUR Arena, and Khimki’s newcomers – Sergey Karasev, Evgeny Valiev and Andrey Desyatnikov – will certainly prepare themselves in a special way for the match against the former team.

Do not break tradition: Zenit – CSKA

And now Zenit has no reason not to continue this winter tradition. Firstly, Joan Plaza has assembled a fairly strong squad for the Euroleague, and by the middle of the season the team should have time to establish internal connections. Secondly, the army team themselves have been seriously updated and will certainly not be favorites in every game of the season, like a year ago. How will the match on January 20 in St. Petersburg end now?

Ponkrashov in Kazan: UNICS – Zenit

Time and place: January 26, Basket Hall (Kazan)

Anton Ponkrashov has been playing for UNICS since 2014. But unexpectedly for everyone, the Kazan club did not renew the contract with its captain after the 2019 playoffs. In July, Ponkrashov signed for Zenit and strengthened Joan Plaza’s already well-equipped back line.

At the end of January, Zenit will come to Kazan – this will be Anton Ponkrashov’s first return to the Basket Hall. Can Peter handle UNICS? Kazan retained the main backbone, having updated the squad with legionnaires and Russian basketball players, and still look formidable, despite the loss of several leaders.

Khvostov vs. Krasnodar: Lokomotiv Kuban vs. Zenit

Time and place: February 10, Basket Hall (Krasnodar)

Dmitry Khvostov was seriously injured in early April 2019 knee, and his Loko, left without the main point guard, ended the season after the first round of the playoffs. Immediately after Dmitry’s injury, the Krasnodar club launched a touching action #hold your tail – social networks were full of words of support for the defender.

However, in the summer the player decided to change the club, moving to St. Petersburg. Khvostov continues to recover from cruciate ligament damage and is unlikely to take part in the first game between Zenit and Loko, which will take place on October 27. But by February 10, Dmitry should return to duty. The return of Khvostov will be more relevant than ever: by the middle of the season, Zenit will surely get tired of fighting on two fronts and will need fresh blood. In addition, the match with Loko will take place at the Basket Hall, the arena where the defender has played for the past 3 years and where the Kuban fan sector has unfurled a giant banner with the touching “With all my heart for Khvostov”. The point guard’s return to Krasnodar will be a special moment.

At the same time, it is unlikely that the audience will be disappointed by what is happening on the floor – meetings between Zenit and Lokomotiv rarely go without noise. The game will be a great warm-up before the All-Star Game.

Not only clubs, but the League itself has traditions. And one of them is a mid-season show. Each of the three All-Star Games – in Sochi, St. Petersburg and Moscow – was unique in its own way, and there is no reason to refuse to host this event in the future. While the players and clubs will have a rest from the competitive part of the tournament, all basketball fans will be able to look at their favorite game from a different angle. Contests, celebrity performances, surprises and, of course, the best basketball players of the League on one site – all this has been and will be at the VTB League All-Star Game.

It is already known that the 2020 All-Star Game will take place on February 16th. It remains to decide on the venue. Moscow and Kazan are among the main contenders for the show.
