6 Calle Hucar Bo. Esperanza, Vieques, Puerto Rico

10.6km from Antonio Rivera Rodriguez Airport

“We adored Casa De Tortuga and had an awesome stay in Esperanza. Our kids (4+6) loved the roosters, chickens, horses, cats, and dogs wandering the neighborhood. And they absolutely adored Skip who showed them his fruit trees and let them pick mangos, star fruit and pomegranate — so cool. It was a perfect base camp for exploring the island. We loved having 2 bedrooms and a little kitchenette to make quick picnics for the beach. It’s easily walkable to the heart of Esperanza (even for our 4 year old). We wish we would have stayed another night instead of going to Fajardo. TIP: The neighborhood roosters take their job very seriously and the cockadoodledoo-ing starts at about 5:30am. Our kids sleep with a sound machine so they weren’t bothered. After the first night, we got wise and turn on ”Ocean Sounds” on our phone to drown them out a bit and get another hour of sleep!”
“My husband and I stayed there 2 nights in Feb. 2022. We absolutely loved it! It’s a perfect location in the Esperanza area. Walking distance to grocery stores, restaurants, beaches, etc. The room was spacious and clean and provided everything we needed and more. The owners were very helpful and accomodating. I would definitely stay there again.”
“We regret that we only had one night to stay. It’s a great little place kept clean and cozy by the very kind hosts. We booked on a third party site but would call direct to book for the next stay. Super easy to find, very short walk to multiple restaurants and bars. Great pool and sunning area. Will definitely come back! Thanks Skip & Linda!!”

20 best boxers in the world. May

Tribuna.com updated the P4P rating, which was compiled by Alexei Sukachev after a survey of well-known journalists writing about boxing.

The very idea of ratings based on a survey of specialists and experts is an eternal compromise: with oneself, with the world around, with Lesha Uralts, finally. There is nowhere to go without someone else’s opinion… But there are comrades who, recently, have not been our comrades at all, to whom this someone else’s opinion… You yourself understood where and where. And it is against them that we will protest today.

This is, of course, The Ring magazine, which regularly and promptly updates its own P4P list . Yes, they are not unique in this. BoxingScene, ESPN, BoxRec – all these more or less respected resources do the same, offering their own version of the list of the best boxers, regardless of weight. But who are they and what are they in comparison with the oldest and once the most authoritative publication of our time.

“Once” is not superfluous here. A few years ago – years before 2007 or 2008 – there was no doubt about the fairness, correctness, and objectivity of The Ring’s ratings. Editor-in-Chief Nigel Collins, a respected (and true) man in the international boxing community, continued the tradition laid down by Nat Fleischer, the founder of the magazine. Yes, it was not without problems – and who does not have them? – but the ratings did not raise questions in their honesty.

That all changed in 2006, when control of the magazine was taken over by a pool of investors led by the already critically acclaimed Oscar De La Hoya. After some time, Michael Rosenthal and Dougie Fisher were introduced to the editorial office of the electronic version of the magazine – two bright and skillful journalists, but wholly controlled by De La Hoya. A confrontation between the old team (Bill Detloff, Eric Raskin, Ivan Goodman and others) and the newcomers, visible to the naked eye, began, in which the former had no chance of winning …

Advertisment

Today, The Ring ratings no longer reflect reality its once inherent objectivity. The rules for drawing champion belts “The Ring” have begun to change, which were once valued above all “alphabet” belts, and now few people need them, except for inveterate populists. The rating committee of the magazine was headed by an old senile respected, but age judge, Chuck Jampa. And, most importantly, the ratings themselves – they no longer reflect reality. And if the divisional charts can still be taken seriously, then things are much worse with P4P.

By the way, the topic is not at all trifling, as many people think. This is not an egg, this is an entire poultry farm buried, because the ratings of the American publication still have considerable authority – enough to be tilted right and left by both popular media and television. And that’s why we decided to “remove the covers” by using our experts.

The Ring’s ratings are saturated with bias, and it’s obvious to the naked eye. Floyd Mayweather 1st place – the highest paid athlete on the planet , closely collaborating with Golden Boy, is beyond doubt: it was earned with sweat and blood, and the ratings of our experts, who unanimously (minus Uralets) put Floyd in first place, confirm this. Another thing is the middle of the top ten, which included two Golden Boy boxers at once: Abner Mares and Adrien Broner, as well as Wladimir Klitschko, who is on friendly terms with Oscar.

Klitschko’s place, albeit a bit overpriced, is the least of the problems

Klitschko’s place, albeit a little high (our experts put him in 6th place), is the least of the problems. Another thing is the 5th and 6th places of the youngsters Broner and Mares. What did they do to get into the holy of holies? Mares has champion titles in three weight categories. This is an achievement, but it is worth considering three important circumstances. Firstly, Mares has not yet defeated any of the superstars. Both De Leon and Anselmo Moreno, who was confidently defeated by Mares, are very strong and worthy guys, but is P4P enough for the first 5? Question … Secondly, Mares is still jumping on top: a title of 53.5 kg, one defense and a jump of 55.3 (the title was won in a fight with Eric Morel, who was released in circulation). One defense there and here is the title at 57.2 kg. Foundation is lacking. Thirdly, it is somehow forgotten that 2010 and 2011 turned out to be “tight” for Mares: a draw against the average champion Perez, a controversial victory over Vic Darchinyan and an even more controversial victory over Russell Mora over Joseph Agbeko.

Things are even worse for Broner, who has been a champion for only a year and a half, and won only one significant victory – over Antonio DeMarco. Broner’s talent is beyond doubt, but DeMarco’s 6th? I do not know. It’s scary to even think where he will end up after a possible victory over Paul Malinagi. Fourth? Third? Or move even Ward?

Meanwhile, there was no place in the rating for people much more deserving. The same Nonito Donaire over the “last many years” killed the entire elite in several weights, created a knockout and an upset of the year, became the boxer of the year and actually unified the first featherweight, the title in which went to the same Mares from the lordly shoulder of the Filipino. But as soon as Nonito stumbled just once – confidently, but not devastatingly – he was thrown out of the top ten. It would make sense if the boxer who defeated Donaire – the brilliant Cuban Rigondeaux – would take his place. But this did not happen: the coveted place was given to Saul Alvarez – after all, he is a fighter of Oscar, and not hated by him (“surpass and overthrow the teacher”) Bob Arum.

A busy schedule, even in the absence of efficient (for P4P) opponents, has already brought Gennady Golovkin to 17th place. And this is far from the limit

By the way, of all of the above, it was Alvarez who most of all deserved the right to claim something serious. In the rating of our experts, he is even higher – 8th – a bit high, for my taste, but his talent and the victory against the very uncomfortable Austin Trout speak for “Red”. A victory achieved in an unusual manner: the famous power boxer Alvarez Trouta simply outboxed. But the appearance of Alvarez does not justify the way Donaire was treated, nor the understated places of Sergio Martinez and Manny Pacquiao. However, why be surprised – these are not Oscar boxers …

Is there an alternative to the American magazine? Until recently, it was difficult to even think about this, but thanks to the efforts of enthusiasts from the BoxingScene portal, this became possible. The Transnatiomal Boxing Ranknigs Board, founded by Jake Donovan and Cliff Rold, has just started its work. The council brought together many journalists and experts who were dissatisfied with the position of The Ring and (partially) left the rating committee of the magazine. See TBRB rating : the first 6 almost completely coincides with the opinion of our experts too (only Andre Ward is ranked higher than Juan Manuel Marquez, but we also had a tense struggle between them). Just like we have Oscar boxers there – only it’s Mares, not Broner and Alvarez (but not all three at the same time). Take a look and decide for yourself whose rating is closer to you – ours, Ring’s or TBRB.

Other changes: note a few things different from those already discussed:

• Another (N+1, as mathematicians say) spring of Bernard Hopkins: Grandfather is already/still/again on the way to the top ten;

• Inactivity plays a role: long-time outdated Carl Froch, Vitali Klitschko and Yuriorkis Gamboa are falling down the rankings. With Klitschko, everything is clear, and he did not fall far. But Gamboa is unlikely to be able to restore his position soon: Darley Perez is not the opponent for this. Another thing is Carl Froch. A win over Mikell Kessler this Saturday could catapult him straight into the top 10 rating

• Activity also varies. The immortal Chris John continues to sit in his Indonesian swamp, spudding vague contenders for his title – this is too little for the unbeaten winner of Marquez to remain in the top 20. Gennady Golovkin is no different: his busy schedule, even in the absence of efficient (for P4P) opponents, has already brought him to 17th place. And this is far from the limit.

Each of the “team” of experts has made his own list of the 20 best, in his opinion, boxers of the Earth, regardless of weight. Aleksey Sukachev (that is, me) put together their options, added his “pets” and calculated a single rating taking into account all opinions and preferences.

Scoring scheme: for the first place in each list, the boxer gets 1 point, for the second – 2, for the 20th – 20. If the boxer is not mentioned among the first 20 participants, he gets 21 points. Then the points are added up. The fewer points a boxer scores in the sum of individual ratings, the higher his position in the final overall rating. In the event of a tie in points, the boxer named in the greater number of individual ratings will take precedence. In case of equality and this indicator, the one who took the highest place in all the presented options is placed higher.

Below is the rating itself, as well as options for each of our respondents. Tribuna.com would like to thank everyone for taking part in the survey and, of course, look forward to seeing you next time in 4 months.

The columns show the name of the boxer, the country and weight class in which he currently competes, the number of options in which this boxer is mentioned, the maximum place in the entire selection of options and, of course, the total number of points. The date of compilation of individual options ranges from the 7th to the 19thth May. The position of this or that fighter in the last issue of our rating is indicated in brackets.

Also named in variants: Brian Viloria (USA, 50. 8), Chad Dawson (USA, 79.4), Lucian Bute (Canada/Romania, 79.4), Miguel Cotto (Puerto Rico, 69 .9), Devon Alexander (USA, 66.7), David Haye (England, 90.8+), Daniel Gil (Australia, 72.6), Amir Khan (England, 63.5), Katsuto Ioku (Japan, 49), Orlando Salido (Mexico, 57.2), Roman Gonzalez (Nicaragua, 49), Anselmo Moreno (Panama, 55.3), Austin Trout (USA, 69.9), Chris John (Indonesia, 57.2), Evgeny Gradovich (Russia, 57.2), Khabib Allahverdiev (Russia, 63.5 ), Denis Shafikov (Russia, 61.2), Sergey Kovalev (Russia, 79.4), Lamont Peterson (USA, 63.5), Robert Guerrero (USA, 66.7), Carl Frampton (Northern Ireland, 55, 3), Mike Alvarado (USA, 63.5) and Leo Santa Cruz (Mexico, 53.5).
