History
The city was founded by Spanish settlers in 1816 as Trujillo Bajo , with its opposite Trujillo Alto after Trujillo (Spain) . In 1857 it was renamed San Fernando de la Carolina , then simply Carolina , in honor of King Charles II of Spain.
The city is known as Land of the Giants not only because of the famous resident Don Felipe Berriel González (who was very tall), but also in honor of other people from Carolina, including the poet Julio de Burgos and Roberto Clemente , then the first baseball player in Latin America.
Carolina was also the birthplace of Jesús T. Piñero, the first Puerto Rico to be appointed governor of Puerto Rico by the United States government.
This city is also called “El Pueblo de los Tumba Brazos”. In the 1800s, the city was a major exporter of Caribbean sugar cane. Most sugar cane workers solved their problems with machetes. Therefore, many of them lost their arm during these fights.

Personalities
- Giulia de Burgos born . Great Puerto Rican poet, singer of “Río Grande Loíza”. She died prematurely in 1953 at the age of 39, when much could have been expected of her. However, she left notebooks with poems Poems exact misma , Poems en veinte surcos and Canción de la verdad sencilla .
- Roberto Clemente was born on August 18, 1934. He was a great baseball player who won many awards. He tragically died in a plane crash en route to Nicaragua to rescue earthquake victims. . He is the first Hispanic to join the de la Fama baseball saloon in North America.
- Ramon Mellado Parsons was born in 1904. An educator and essayist, he was secretary of public education, president of the Council of Higher Education, and a delegate to the ELA’s founding convention. Among his works is Education in Puerto Rico ( La education in Puerto Rico ). He died in 1985.
- Jesus T. Piñero , born April 16, 1897. He was the first governor of Puerto Rico and a founding member of the Democratic People’s Party and the Washington Commission. In 1946, the President of the United States appointed him governor of Puerto Rico. He died in 1952.
- Angel Rivero Mendez , born in 1856, soldier and journalist. He fought in the Spanish-Cuban-American War as a member of the Spanish Executive. He writes a column about this war in Puerto Rico. He died at 1930 year.
- Jesús M.O Sanroma , born 1902. An internationally renowned pianist who has contributed to Puerto Rico’s influence by performing in the world’s major capitals. He was educated in the USA, France and Germany. Thanks to the magic of the record, we can enjoy his performances on many records. He died in 1984.
- Modesto Rivera Rivera . Born December 24, 1897 in Carolina, died 1982. Maestro, professor at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR). President of the Maestro Association, Chairman of the Municipal Assembly of San Juan (since 1964 to 68). Essayist. He attended elementary school in Carolina. He received his secondary education at the higher school of the UNR. In 1933 he graduated from UPR in the arts. In 1949, he received a master’s degree in Latin American studies from UPR.
