Playa Peña, a wonderful surprise just a few minute’s walk from Old San Juan.  For many years there was no beach in Old San Juan.  City workers and volunteers cleaned up this beach and gave locals and visitors easy access to it.  It’s perfect for those needing a little escape from the hustle of the city just a few steps away.  Peña translates to rock, and the name is descriptive of the beach due to all the rocks along the shore which gives it so much character.

Access to Playa Peña is right across from El Capitolio (Capitol Building), you’ll see the steps to the right of the San Juan Bautista statue.  This beach is not crowded.  Most visitors that want beach time stay at the beach resort areas of Condado, Ocean Park, and Isla Verde, so you may find yourself sharing this beach with just a few other people – giving you a more relaxed natural experience.

If you were to walk east of the steps, you will get to some ruins and find sea glass along the shore.  The left side is nicer (in the summer months) and when the tide is low.

Please Note:  You´ll want to immediately claim your spot and jump in the clear waters, but please enjoy this beach with care.  Depending on the conditions, strong currents could take you right out into the open water, the riptide and undertow can be very dangerous.  There are no lifeguards at this beach.  Use the beach at your own risk, not recommended for children.  The water is best for swimming during the summer months, the water is crystal clear, warm and the views of the fort from the water make this beach a unique place.

We’ll start our online photo tour by walking to the west end of the beach, where you´ll find a beautiful scenic corner perfect for relaxation and watching the waves.  At high tide it may not be possible to use the beach on the west end, the water comes all the way out to the wall.

When you walk all the way to the end, you’ll find this breathtaking spot.  The waters run like a stream, and the bottom is rocky with smooth pebbles in white, red, black, and brown.  The water is from 6 inches to about 1.5 feet deep (changes with the tide).  There are schools of tiny fish – perfect for kids.  There’s an opening to the ocean protected by a wall of rocks that allows fresh flowing water to come in.  Keep yourself and your children away from that spot for your protection.

This spot is really beautiful… below is a couple looking for sea glass at the bottom.  When the tide is low, this is a wonderful spot to watch the water flow into this natural pool.

Here you don’t hear the sounds of the city…only ocean waves crashing in.

Getting to Peña Beach -San Juan, Puerto Rico

If you’re staying in Old San Juan, the easiest and most convenient way to get to this beach is by taking the free trolley.   Get off at the Capitol Building stop (18A).  Right across from the Capitol Building, you’ll see a statue of San Juan Bautista (Saint John the Baptist) and a stairway to the right leading down to this beautiful and unique beach.  Purchase a cooler bag, bring your favorite drinks, plenty of sunscreen lotion, and a towel.  Hop on the trolley and enjoy a great beach day in Old San Juan.

Safety at Playa Peña

The sandy area is not easily seen from the road, so it does feel a bit isolated.  I was told that the police/ security patrol nearby walks and take a peek down from above.  Although Old San Juan is considered a very safe area, common sense should always be practiced when you travel as you would in any other city.

As mentioned earlier, there are no lifeguards at this beach, so use the beach at your own risk and parents keep an eye on your children at all times.  In case of an emergency call 911 and walk up the steps.  There are police patrolling the area all day just across the street.

25 km from the lively southern resorts of Tenerife, you can find a wonderful place with a quiet provincial charm. For example, the port town Playa San Juan ( Playa de San Juan ), located on the southwestern coast of the island in the province of Guia de Isora.   The town of San Juan is one of 17 settlements in the south of Isora. It is located at the mouth of the Gia Gorge, surrounded by banana and flower plantations. Perhaps the main value of the surrounding area can be considered fresh water, which is abundant here by Tenerife standards. You can count about 40 artesian sources. And how many more are hidden in the steppe spaces!

  The history of the settlement dates back to the first half of the 16th century. A remote fishing village arose on the very shore of the ocean with the arrival of the conquistadors, who declared themselves masters of life. It began with the construction of the port of St. John, which for a long time was used for navigation in coastal waters, including for fishing.

  Playa San Juan is home to more than 200,000 islanders. The seemingly unremarkable Atlantic town in 2012 was in the top five best places for people to live on planet Earth.

  The mild and dry climate, the presence of bays suitable for the city beach and the cleanest environment have played into the hands of the resort industry, which is actively developing at the present time. European pensioners quickly felt the charm of Isora, and at the first opportunity look into this quiet haven. In the early morning they take tables in coastal cafes and sit with a cup of strong coffee until late in the evening.

  Meanwhile, smiling citizens go to work to catch as many seafood as possible for sale. Everything that has not left the pier goes to retail chains. Despite the fact that fishermen and traders do not forget about the siesta, the store shelves are overflowing with seafood, and freshly caught fish is prepared in restaurants.

Yes, and where to rush, if in 3-4 hours, wherever you “run”, you still find yourself on the shore of a huge bottomless ocean. Perhaps this is the philosophy of Canarian happiness.

  In fact, they are within easy reach from here. The road to Las Americas takes 20 minutes, to Santa Cruz less than an hour on the autobahn. Port of Saint John is ideal as a starting point for exploring the island. Coastal Highway TF-47 is a convenient direct link to both north and south, from Alcala to Adeje. Highway TF-463 leads to the administrative center of Guia de Isora.

  From the southern airport 36 km from the northern one – 95 km. Intercity bus service is extremely sluggish. Therefore, if you do not “seal” the entire vacation on the beach, then there is nothing to do here without renting a car. Taxi is more expensive.

  Beaches

  San Juan got a rocky basalt coast formed by hardened volcanic rocks. The one and a half kilometer coastline accommodates the port and several picturesque beaches with different coverage.

  Playa Rosalia

  Wild rocky beach a kilometer from the port behind the rocks in the northern part of the city, where Bahamar Street ends. People come here to stay away from walking areas, listen to the sound of the surf, dream in solitude, enjoy the sunset. It is difficult to walk barefoot along the narrow and rocky beach spit without the habit. In a strong storm, entering the water turns into a test for yogis, which not everyone wants to pass. I must say that strong waves still happen here, albeit infrequently. But is it not enough just to contemplate the elements without entering into a dangerous single combat with it?

  Service is completely non-existent in this place, and until the sluggish Tenerife people roll up their sleeves, the little cove of Rosalia remains a virgin bosom of Atlantic nature.

  Driving along the rocky coast along the federal highway TF-47 from San Juan towards Alcala, you won’t even notice how you pass this piece of paradise. What a pity if so!

  Playa San Juan Beach

  Civilized city beach starts from the port, its length is about 380 m. Playa San Juan port bay is spacious, so the ocean is calm and friendly. From strong storms and gusty winds, the beach area is beaten off by breakwaters. The gray sandy spit with pebble spots, although narrow, only about 30 m wide, allows even small children to get used to big water. Sunbathing accessories, namely sun loungers, umbrellas, sports equipment, can be freely rented. The main stationary amenities are also provided: showers with fresh water, garbage cans, a lifeguard tower, an open-air cafe.

  Perhaps, in terms of respectability and service equipment, San Juan beach is inferior to the southern favorites Costa Adeje, Las Americas or Los Cristianos, but not in terms of natural frequency. Otherwise, he would not have received the coveted Blue Flag in 2012 as one of the best beaches in Spain.

  Towards the southern edge, the civilized beach “turns to stone”, and behind the cape it completely “runs wild”, turning into Playa Aguadulce. This is a narrow coastal strip 250 m long with sharp pebbles and small pebbles, which was chosen by surfers.   What to see

  Even the most inconspicuous town has its special features. And if its sights are not described in world catalogs, this does not mean that they do not exist at all. However, those who claim that there is nothing exclusive in the port of St. John are not far from the truth. But we will still eat.

  Exhibition Whale Tail (Cola de Alcaraván)

  Take a walk to the end of the main beach. To your surprise, you will run into a white-stone house attached to a rock, resembling a nomad’s yurt. Upon closer examination, it turns out that this is not a dwelling at all, but a hornodecal – an old limestone kiln in which pottery was fired. It was restored, covered with iron gates. It is well preserved, despite the flimsy material from which it was laid out. Or maybe they changed a couple of pebbles near the old masonry. This is just the beginning of the journey.

  Stairs and footpath uphill a couple of meters east of the beach – you’re there. You got to the observation deck, from where the endless ocean, neat houses, a pier with dangling boats are visible at a glance.

  And here is another exclusive – Alcaravan sculpture from local metal tamer Roberto Martinon. A heavy whale tail from a stone plinth swings over the last turn of the cobblestone path leading to the mirador. It seems that the master did not try hard on the detailed study of the most elegant part of the marine animal, but only outlined the shape with strokes. The mistake of the impressionist was corrected by the masters of graffiti. The monument is painted with bright colors from the pedestal itself.   It can be found in almost any settlement, large or small. If you want to know the latest city news or understand the Canarian soul, go to the market. In San Juan , in addition to fishing, many people make a living in agriculture, growing vegetables, fruits, and flower plants for sale. Ecologically clean, sun-warmed harvest from fincas (local homesteads) goes to the farmers’ market, which is open only on Wednesdays at Plaza de La Iglesia from 9.00 to 14.00. Bus route number 473.

  You will be surprised, but untreated tomatoes, bananas, grapes, apples from a farmer look less attractive than industrial ones from a supermarket. But you can’t fool an experienced buyer.   Walking alley

  The territory adjacent to the beach spit has been turned into a recreation area almost throughout its entire length. The charming chamber embankment stretches for one and a half kilometers along the coastline, containing the port and two city beaches: cultural and wild. The walking path throughout its entire length is paved with gray basalt stone with mosaic colored areas and is separated from the sand and pebble strip by a low tufa parapet.

To divide the silver monster, you will need a huge knife, which can be found in the nearest restaurant. Night catch arrives at dawn, and it is more diverse in terms of assortment. Any of the caught fish can immediately get to your table from the deck, just pay. Therefore, as a breadwinner, the port of San Juan receives five points out of five.

  But the natural beach in the port waters from the point of view of the “seal” pulls on a two. No, a strip of gray sand half a meter wide is not empty. People sit on the parapets and on the sand to soak up the sun, meet the sunset, watch the blue and white fishing boats moored at the pier.   in the Coastal region of the Giya-de-Sajor on the shore on the banks restored one of the symbols of the municipality – the ancient lime kiln Horno de la Cal . After about 2 months of restoration work carried out by Geocan under contract with the city council, the stove has returned to its original appearance, attracting attention. 31,574 euros were spent on the project.

  The lime kiln, not currently in use, is located under a small rock at the end of the promenade, next to the main bathing area, also known as Playa Grande. This waterfront, which is another charm of the town, now has one of the unique elements of the town’s history, an old lime kiln dating from the mid-twentieth century and located a few meters from the Atlantic Ocean.

  Construction of the current oven owned by Antonio Hernandez Santana , was started in 1950. Apparently, the work, which took a year to build under the supervision of a kiln specialist, was carried out by local young workers aged 16 to 18.

  In 1951, the kiln was already producing lime, which was obtained from limestone brought by boat from the island of Fuerteventura. Due to the large draft of the ship carrying limestone, he anchored off the coast. People gradually ferried the goods with the help of an additional small boat to the shore. Next, the workers loaded the rock on their shoulders, put it in a truck, and when it was full, they headed to the place where the furnace was located. Once there, the stone was crushed, placed on top of the loading tank, and by stirring and blowing the coal, the firing was carried out.

  The height of the kiln made it possible to produce a large amount of lime, which was delivered by truck to various parts of the island for use as building material, for whitewashing walls, dams, as a disinfectant for houses, used for infectious diseases, to prevent decay standing water and to prevent infections during burials.

  Use of lime

  Lime (also called quicklime) which may contain calcium oxide. It is obtained by roasting limestone rocks or dolomites. Lime has been used since antiquity as a conglomerate in construction, as well as for painting the walls and facades of buildings built of mud brick – typical of ancient Mediterranean houses – or for making Greek fire. 9No. 477
