Parque Nacional El Yunque | Las informaciones relevantes

Puerto Rico: a debtor country from a “rich port”

The name of Caribbean Puerto Rico, the first European colony in the New World, literally means “rich port”. Today, however, one thing is not true: the island of three million has been an overseas territory of the United States for almost a hundred years, and recently it has been trying in vain to tame the gigantic public debt.

Until 1898, when the country became an American colony, Puerto Rico used the Spanish flag. The current one reflects the clear inspiration of neighboring Cuba, which at the time was living in a revolutionary struggle for independence from Spain, and Puerto Ricans largely sympathized with them. The white star as a symbol of freedom is located in a triangle representing the three pillars of the revolution: equality, liberty and brotherhood. The use of this standard was initially prohibited by law, and its official adoption was not approved by the US government until 1952 years old, but he can only be flown with the American flag.

The financial deficit increased dramatically after the island was devastated in September 2017 by Hurricane Maria, the strongest hurricane in nine decades. It has claimed nearly 4,000 lives for $91 billion in damages that have yet to be fully repaired. As a result, Puerto Rico ranks last in most economic indicators compared to other US states, with an alarming 46% of the population living below the poverty line and an unemployment rate twice the average for the rest of the US states. Mainly because of the many times higher electricity prices, the cost of living for the average Puerto Rican is higher than, for example, if he lived in Seattle or Atlanta. Over the past few years, public debt has risen to a record $72 billion, or 103% of gross domestic product.

Communication with space lost

The famous Arecibo astronomical radio telescope near the city of the same name survived Hurricane Maria, but in recent months it has suffered a series of accidents and deaths: in August, an auxiliary anchor cable broke, falling from a 305-meter height, due to which formed a 30-meter crack. The platform hanging above the slab was also damaged, and in early November one of the main cables that tied it to the supporting pillars broke. After the latest accident, the director of the observatory, Ralph Gohm, announced that the extent of the damage, unfortunately, could not be repaired, and that the radio telescope was awaiting dismantling.

This is where the real giant finished its work: the Arecibo antenna worked for 57 years, during which time it made a number of important discoveries. Shortly after commissioning, the telescope contributed, for example, to the discovery of the first double star, a rapidly rotating neutron constant. In recent years, it has become an important part of the SETI@home project looking for signs of extraterrestrial civilizations. And it also served as a grateful backdrop for filmmakers – among other things, the telescope “played” in conjunction with Goldeneye. And only in 2016, the Chinese FAST deprived him of the position of the world’s largest radio telescope.

Promised Land

However, for scientists other than astronomers, the easternmost continent of the Great Antilles archipelago continues to be the Promised Land. El Yunque National Park, incidentally the only rainforest in the United States, is home to 239 endemic plants and dozens of extremely rare species, including the latest examples of the endangered Puerto Rican parrot.

Many-colored tree frogs “koki”, which have become the national symbol of the island, attract a lot of attention. And another local uniqueness is the three “radiant” bays: thanks to the populations of bioluminescent diatoms, the view of the water at night offers a million shining lights.

Unfortunate Columbus

In 1991, on the approaching 500th anniversary of the discovery of America, the Georgian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli created a statue of Christopher Columbus with his three vessels, symbolically called the Birth of the New World: 110 meters more than the statue of Liberty. The author intended to install it in one of the cities of America. However, his work, which consisted of 2,750 bronze and steel pieces, was gradually rejected by New York, Miami, and Baltimore city halls on the grounds that “it’s ugly.” It wasn’t until 2016 that the giant Columbus found a site near Arecibo in Puerto Rico and, among other things, became the tallest statue in North America. However, the controversial reputation and nicknames such as “Robo Columbus” and “Chris Kong” are reported to attract at least 300,000 more tourists a year than usual.

The modern history of the Caribbean island began in November 1493, when the fleet of Christopher Columbus anchored off its coast. The newly discovered mainland, which immediately became the historically first Spanish colony, was first named by the famous sailor San Juan Bautista in honor of St. John the Baptist; only later was it renamed Puerto Rico, or “wealthy port”. The arrival of the Spaniards meant, among other things, the gradual disappearance of the indigenous Taino Indians.

Under American Wings

Puerto Rico remained in the hands of Spain for four centuries, during which the Europeans left a significant mark: 98% of the local population is of Hispanic origin. The first governor in the early 16th century was an officer of Columbus, Juan Ponce de Leon, who devoted his whole life to searching for the elixir of youth. In any case, he found a gold reserve in Puerto Rico and founded the capital Caparra, now extinct. However, two years later, the status of the metropolis was transferred to San Juan.

After the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898, the victorious United States took Puerto Rico from their rival, along with Cuba, the Philippines, and Guam, and made it their own colony. The new agreement was initially accompanied by local unrest and several independence movements emerged.

Will the 51st US state be created?

1952 finally confirmed its belonging to the United States, when Puerto Rico received the status of a freely associated territory. For locals, this means that, despite having their own self-government, they do not conduct foreign policy or defense. They cannot elect a president or members of Congress, but they are not required to pay federal taxes. This is probably the main reason why, in the previous five referendums, they have always voted against the complete incorporation of Puerto Rico into the US as the 51st state. Only last year they voted in favor, albeit by a small majority.

Puerto Ricans are not afraid of hurricanes

Society

While thousands of people around the world are sleeping and seeing how to move to the United States for permanent residence, there are those who do not want the replicated “American happiness” in any way. Moreover, when this Citizens are asked to simply go to the ballot box and vote to become part of the United States, they stubbornly refuse such a privilege. Keeping their American passports, they do not vote for the American president. This country is called Puerto Rico. [b] It is not necessary to vote for the president in the continental states. Star-striped flags hang around, the airport receives flights from the USA at the local, and not at the international terminal, and the highways and shopping malls around are exactly the same as in the vicinity of New York and Chicago. And yet, not everyone here is like in the real states. The customs officer who checked my bags to see if there were fruits or vegetables “from there” remarked: “It is there, in America, everyone voted for Obama last year. And in our country, no one voted for him – like for McCain. ”Yes, local islanders do not have the right to vote for the President of the United States, which does not prevent them from receiving American citizenship at birth and enjoying all those benefits (and even more!) than ordinary Americans. Puerto Rico (translated from Spanish as “rich port”) is the third largest island in the Caribbean after Cuba and Hispaniola. Its territory is 160 by 56 km, which, if desired, can be driven up and down in a couple of days. Puerto Rico is located in the very center of the Caribbean Sea and was once the most important outpost of Spain in the New World. The island was discovered by the famous navigator Christopher Columbus in 1493 and remained under the Spanish crown until 1898, when, as a result of the war between Spain and the United States, it became “almost American”. The fact is that immediately after the expulsion of the Spaniards from the island, Puerto Rico received the status of a “freely joined to the United States” territory (by the way, the Mariana Islands, located in the Pacific Ocean, have exactly the same status today). a referendum on the possibility of joining the United States as the 51st state, but the proud Puerto Ricans rejected this option. Now more than 4 million people live in Puerto Rico, of which over 1 million inhabit the capital, the city of San Juan. It is summer on the island all year round, the temperature is from 23 to 29°С, which at one time gave the Spaniards a reason to call Puerto Rico “isla de encanto”, that is, “the island of charm.” [b] They are not afraid of hurricanes [/ b] nature test of strength. Being in the very center of the Caribbean Sea, Puerto Rico consistently becomes a victim of destructive hurricanes and tropical tornadoes. However, there are almost no dilapidated buildings on the island, and therefore it manages to avoid those devastating consequences that the surrounding states literally level with the ground. By the way, before coming here more than 9 Europeans0% of the island was covered by tropical forests. Then these forests began to be mercilessly cut down, and only in the middle of the 19th century. Spanish King Alphonse XII, by his decree, literally saved the green cover of Puerto Rico from complete destruction. And in 1903, the El Yunque National Reserve was officially created on the island – now one of the largest national parks in the United States. Much in the Western Hemisphere began precisely with Puerto Rico. So, from the XVI century. it was there that the Spaniards began to produce rum from sugar cane. Previously, local residents used this plant exclusively for building houses. And only after the Spanish and French settlers began to make a sweetish-tasting and cloudy-colored liquid from sugar cane waste, a real “rum fever” began not only in Puerto Rico, but also on the surrounding islands. And in 1736, Puerto – Rico from Africa got coffee. It was cultivated by immigrants from Corsica, who by the end of the 19th century. began to supply it from here on an industrial scale to Europe and, in particular, to Russia. Puerto Ricans enthusiastically say about their coffee that it is “black as the devil; hot as hell; sweet like love; and pure as an angel. The capital is the ancient city of San Juan, founded by the Spaniards in 1521. More than once the Dutch and the British wanted to recapture the city, and the famous British pirate Francis Drake once entered San Juan Bay with his corsairs and tried to seize the Spanish ships with gold and silver that were stationed there, which were preparing to be sent to the metropolis. However, the well-aimed gunner from the fortress of El Morro, with the very first shot, hit Drake’s captain’s cabin, who was just about to have breakfast, and thereby disrupted the English attack on the city. [b] Salsa with rum – an explosive mixture [/ b] Along the entire tall fortress wall encircling the old San Juan, garitas are still preserved – openwork stone booths for sentries. It was from them that the guards informed the city of approaching enemy ships, and it was from there that they had to watch day and night so that scouts did not climb the walls. and porticoes and cozy squares-parks of the type that can be found today in Spanish cities. But all this has already remained in the distant past. Puerto Rico is much more famous in the world for its incendiary dance called salsa. Salsa in Spanish means “sauce”. And he came up with salsa at the end of 1960s Puerto Rican Tito Puente, then living in New York. Modern salsa is a mixture of traditional Caribbean rhythms, African religious dances, American jazz and big band. Clockwork music is accompanied by the accompaniment of a conga hand drum, as well as other percussion and wind instruments. Even Puerto Rico in the whole “drinking” world is invariably associated with rum. In 1862, the Bacardi family arrived in the Cuban city of Santiagode Cuba, and its head, Don Facundo Bacardi, became the first entrepreneur to start producing rum for sale. Initially, the production of rum family Bacardi was in Cuba, and only 19In 36, the descendants of Don Facundo opened a rum factory on the island of Puerto Rico. They chose a bat as the emblem of their company, which in the homeland of their ancestors, in Catalonia, was identified with health and success. Now 85% of all Bacardi rum is produced in Puerto Rico, 14% in Mexico and about 0.5% in India. It is interesting that as soon as the revolution took place in Cuba in 1959, many Cuban entrepreneurs (including producers rum) moved to Puerto Rico and since then have kept their sugar cane plantations and rum distilleries there. Every year, the Bacardi company produces 21 million boxes of light and dark (it is also called gold) rum, and each box contains 9liter bottles. In addition to rum, it was from Puerto Rico that rum-based drinks such as daiquiri (a mixture of white Bacardi rum, sugar and lemon juice), mojito (mint leaves are added to the same rum mixture) and pina colada spread all over the world. True, the Cubans assured me that all the drinks mentioned above originated in Cuba, not to mention the world’s most popular rum-based cocktail called “Cuba Libre” (“Free Cuba”). This blend of Bacardi white rum and Coca-Cola was first tasted by American soldiers in 1898 g. during the American-Spanish war. But Puerto Ricans categorically disagree with them. By the way, after the island was annexed to the United States, the American government tried several times to introduce English-language education on the island. And failed every time. Even with passports of US citizens, proud Puerto Ricans manage to preserve both their vibrant Latin American culture and the Spanish language – that is, their identity. France). To visit the country you need a US visa. And God forbid you have some vegetables or fruits in your luggage! At the San Juan airport, this is checked in the most serious way. The prices on the island for almost everything are “Moscow”, but for vintage rum, daiquiri and mojito (bottles of 1.5 liters) – about 2 times lower.[ b] Reference “VM” [/ b] The Freely Associated State of Puerto Rico is located in the Caribbean Sea, on the island of Puerto Rico from the group of the Greater Antilles and a number of adjacent small islands. Puerto Rico depends on the United States and has the status of ” unincorporated organized territory, which means that the territory is under the control of the United States, but is not an integral part of them. The operation of the US Constitution is limited there, the supreme power belongs to the US Congress, but the territory has its own self-government system. Puerto Rico also has its own constitution, legislative, executive and judicial branches of government.
