Puerto Rico es conocido en algunos ámbitos como la Isla del Cordero. El nombre viene de su escudo de armas, el cual tiene un cordero descansando sobre un libro con los siete sellos del Apocalipsis. Ello, en clara alusión a San Juan. Data de 1511 y es el segundo más antiguo de las Américas. No los quiero cansar con la breve clase de historia.

El cordero es símbolo de reconocimiento, que nuestra isla está en manos de Dios, herencia de nuestra vieja tradición cristiana. Pero, mi hermano, desde hace un tiempo parece que estamos en manos de otras personas. Hago referencia a este símbolo patrio, pues confieso que el coraje ha nublado mi mente de un tiempo para acá.

Me ronda la cabeza proponer un cambio. Cambiar el cordero por un lechón. Sí, leyó bien. Un lechón. Nuestra isla ha sido atacada por un grupo de personas sin escrúpulos que se han dedicado a convertir este hermoso terruño en un corral de cerdos.

De un tiempo para acá sufrimos de una pandemia de garabatos de pintura que arropa carreteras, casas, edificios y cualquier estructura sobre la que se pueda pintar. Tome, por ejemplo, la avenida Piñero, la avenida Roosevelt, el expreso Las Américas, la Baldorioty de Castro o cualquier otra y podrá “recrear” su vista con un escenario dantesco de palabrotas, números, frases o, simplemente, garabatos de todos colores, afeando nuestro entorno. La plaga está distribuida en toda la zona metropolitana. A ello tenemos que sumarle la abundante cantidad de edificios abandonados que se convirtieron en canvas de nuestros inspirados o alucinados “artistas”.

Contamos con estructuras privadas, gubernamentales o hasta aquellas que en algún momento albergaron estructuras de gobierno. Los inquilinos se fueron y poco importó a los dueños darle un cuidado mínimo. Para ponerle la tapa al pomo, tenemos vías de rodaje llenas de hoyos, así como aceras y paredes anti-ruido con abundante sucio. Sumado a unas zonas verdes que solo son podadas cuando el “yerbaje” toma una tonalidad de selva. Me pregunto, ¿qué ha pasado con las divisiones de ornato del DTOP, Carreteras, municipios y otras instrumentalidades? Reconozco que existe una crisis de dinero. Pero, ¡caramba, ya esto es el colmo!

También pregunto: ¿Dónde están los recursos de seguridad pública y privada que no actúan para detener a estos “grafiteros”? Sus “obras” son lo suficientemente grandes para deducir que se tomaron un buen rato y que no actuaron solos. En todo este tiempo, no he escuchado de una sola detención de estos vándalos.

De igual forma, los ciudadanos tenemos responsabilidad. No todo se le puede dejar al gobierno. He visto vertederos clandestinos en lugares donde no deben estar. Cerca de mi trabajo paso por un tramo que el municipio de San Juan y sus empleados lo han recogido tres veces. Al poco tiempo vuelven y lo llenan de basura. ¡Por Dios! Lo mismo hacen con edificios abandonados que sus alrededores están llenos de basura de irresponsables.

Esto debe ser un campanazo para todos. Tenemos una isla hermosa. Un paraíso lleno de recursos naturales envidiables, pero si no ponemos de nuestro empeño mataremos esta gran joya. Muchos turistas que nos visitan por vez primera deben fruncir el ceño, como señal de desagrado.

Es hora de que esta problemática se convierta en tema de conversación. Es hora de establecer estrategias desde la comunidad donde convivimos, hasta los más recónditos lugares de la ciudad. No permitamos que nuestro 100 x 35 se convierta en la Isla del Puerquito.
