What kind of food to order in a Puerto Rico restaurant – Travel Free

Video: Unusual food. Gastronomic travel. Puerto Rico 3.17

If you’re new to Puerto Rican cooking, you may not recognize many of the best dishes on the menu. What for? Because you are unlikely to find them anywhere else. Dishes like Mofongo , asopao , and Lechon won’t be found in your Spanish restaurant area and are definitely worth trying while you’re here.

Here’s a helpful guide to the best foods on a typical Puerto Rican menu.

the most popular dish on the island and a must try if you want to meet Puerto Ricans Comida Criolla, or local cuisine.

You can have your mofongo stuffed with steak, chicken, vegetables, shrimp, crab or mixed seafood, to name the most common options.

Several restaurants where you can find excellent mofongo:

  1. La Casita Blanca (Santurce)
  2. El Jibarito (Old San Juan)
  3. Don Tello (Catagno)
  4. Pasión por el Fogón6 (90 Lofaro) 05 (Ponce)

Lechon

I’m not sure if pork is another white meat in Puerto Rico; this clearly interferes with any other meat, white or not, in popularity. Lechon or roast suckling pig is not unique to Puerto Rico, but you will have a hard time finding a destination or people more dedicated to this dish. A weekend family tradition, a must-have service at any big family gathering and a meal that comes with its own restaurant (called

This is a dish you might have to hunt for, even in Puerto Rico. Pastelón is a kind of sweet banana lasagna. The dish is usually made with ground beef and tomato sauce (like regular lasagna), but bananas give it a sweetness and unique texture.

Three places serving pastels:

  1. La Casita Blanca (Santurce)
  2. Don Tello (Cataño – not on the regular menu, sometimes on specials)
  3. La Casa de los Pastelillos (Guayama)

Chillo Frito

Chillo Frito or fried whole red snapper among my favorite non-filo fish dishes, be sure to catch a whole red snapper (be sure to catch a whole fish from my seafood dish), whole fish in Puerto Rico. Again, this one is not unique to the island, but it appears on many menus and is usually prepared with a simple flair that captures the flavor of the fish. Have it with tostones or amarillos.

Where to find crispy and delicious frito:

  1. Soleil Beach Club (Pignones)
  2. La Taska del Seskador
  3. Pasión Por El Fogón (Fahardo)
  4. Lola (Ponce)
  5. El Jibarit

Fried pork chop, invented in a restaurant on the island, Chulets Can Can (sometimes Kan Kan) can be found in many Rican restaurants, though it’s not as common as the other dishes on this list. The key to this classic is that the patties are served with ribs and Cuero or cracked pork skin.

Restaurants that serve chulets can:

  1. La Guardarraya (“Fence” – in Guayanilla, this is the birthplace of the dish)
  2. Rais (Old San Juan)
  3. Don Tello (Catagno)
  4. Metropol (several places )

One of Puerto Rico’s most popular seafood dishes, Salmorejo de Jueyes or crab meat stew is a rich and flavorful dish of shredded crab meat usually eaten with tostons. Sofrito gives it flavor and makes it a tropical Caribbean delicacy. You can find salmorejo de jueye in most seaside stalls and eateries.

Five places that serve salmorejo:

  1. Cafe Puerto Rico (Old San Juan)
  2. La Casa de los Pastelillos (Guayama)
  3. Soleil Beach Club (Pignones)
  4. Kiosks in Piñones 905 905
