Puerto Rico – Spearhead

Finally finished reviewing photos and videos from my Puerto Rican trip today. I will try to place a small part here, solely for a general idea of this Caribbean island, often called “heaven on Earth” in tourist guides.

A few words to introduce: the very name of the island and the state means “rich port”. As a matter of fact, speaking of the state, I am a little prevaricating, since its independence is very relative. Officially, it is a territory dependent on the United States with the status of an “unincorporated organized territory.” On the one hand, a lot is said for the fact that this is part of the United States (the American Congress officially dominates the island, the post office, the army are American, flights to Puerto Rico from the United States are local, international flights are met by the American customs service, residents from 1917 years are US citizens), on the other hand, it has more independence than individual states – its own constitution, mainly the European system of measures (kilometers and kilograms instead of miles and pounds), residents take part in the primaries, but do not vote for the president, representatives in The Senate does not have the right to vote.

If you look into history, in the pre-Columbian era, there was a civilization of Indians on the island who founded the Taino culture. There are still traces of this culture in small quantities. But when Columbus landed on the island during his second trip, this gave impetus to its colonization by the Spaniards. Already 15 years after Columbus, the Spanish conquistadors arrived on the island. Diseases, almost harmless to Europeans, proved fatal to the natives. The Indian population of the island began to decrease rapidly, in return, the conquistadors imported African slaves. In a short time, the population decreased by 30 times, and since there were almost no women among the conquistadors and they willingly married locals, the remnants of the Taino Indians mixed with Europeans and blacks. The Taino culture has disappeared.

Since 1898, Puerto Rico has passed to the USA. But the final decision on the status of the territory has not yet been made. Having gained relative independence, Puerto Rico has repeatedly held referendums on joining the United States as a state. Recent referendums have invariably ended with majority consent to this move. But the US is in no hurry to receive such a gift. Perhaps because the island is still poorer than the poorest of the states. Although the islanders it is imperceptible.

Travel guides will tell you that almost the entire population speaks both official languages - Spanish and English. Our practice shows that every time in stores and other public places we have to look for someone who speaks English (not to mention the lack of duplication in English of product names, price tags, text on information boards). And in some places we did not succeed, especially at gas stations. Fortunately, modern technologies (translator in the phone) have solved the problems that have arisen. Well, since Puerto Rico is a major tourist center, and largely lives off tourism, the population is friendly.

An interesting thing happened with the units of measurement. The metric system remained from the Spanish period, and the distances on the signs are indicated in kilometers, the price in stores is per kilogram. But the speed limits on the signs are American in miles per hour. Whether there are a lot of tourists from the USA, or because the cars have a main scale in miles per hour, I don’t know.

Here in miles per hour

And here in kilometers

By the way, from these two pictures you can see that the island is quite mountainous. This was a surprise for us. It’s good that the rented Mitsubishi had an overdrive mode, on some climbs it was difficult to move just on the machine.

Capital San Juan. Bird’s-eye view.

In the yard of our house. Something tropical, I don’t know what.

They call their highways somewhat indecent – autopista.

Or these signs

View from the balcony, swimming pool and 200m from the sea.

A tree with these colors will be seen many more times. Moreover, the flowers are multi-colored, from yellow, orange, to all shades of red.

Puerto Rican Red Snapper. Kind of scary, spikes, but delicious.

Wandered through the fortresses of the conquistadors – El Morro and San Cristobal.

Charma inside

Output

The most common bird in the island – Gracks. It is distinguished by vertical rear plumage, and in males it is double, like in fighters.

Old Town.

Bird. I was on duty at this place every day.

Sea urchins – sand dollar. Not prickly, in some places they line the bottom like pavement tiles.

And this is the other side of the Caribbean Sea.

Pelican flight

Raising chickens and roosters seems to be a local sport. They are found everywhere, from the airport and gas stations, mountain serpentines.

Rainbow over the Caribbean.

American school buses are much more boring.

Once again, a flowering tree beloved by Puerto Ricans. It is actually an immigrant from Madagascar. It is called Royal Delonix (Delonix regia)

Pelican on vacation.

… and in flight

It looks like there were not enough chickens, he joined the pigeons.

Who is in the little house?

Sometimes they fall. God forbid you get a coconut on the head.

Photo from the El Yunque National Forest.

At the top of the Yokahu Tower. In the same forest.

It is because of such places that they call it heaven on earth.

Yokahu Tower.

Forced to interrupt. To be continued.
