One of the nicest beaches in the north central area of Puerto Rico is “Playa Puerto Nuevo”, in the little town of Vega Baja.

Vega Baja used to be an industrial powerhouse a couple of decades back, but today —due in great part to the stupidity of the Island’s central government— unemployment is sky-high and there’s evidence of the economic downturn everywhere.

One of the areas where you’ll see such decay is on your way to Puerto Nuevo Beach. There are closed industrial concerns all along the way.

Now let’s talk about the beach! Puerto Nuevo Beach is beautiful. Not because of any governmental intervention but because God just made it that way.

When you reach the beach there’s an ample parking area but no parking attendant. Only a local freeloader will approach you, ask for a dollar to “watch your car”, and then do nothing.

Entering the beach area it becomes evident that there are no showers, no lockers, no lifeguards and no recycling facilities. The place is more or less the way nature made it, only with a little more wear and tear.

However, it’s breathtaking!!!

On the west side there’s a huge beach area with hardly any surf. What I also noticed (and this is just a personal preference of mine) is that there are hardly any palm trees, so shade is at a premium.

Walking north from the entrance there’s a huge breakwater where the fury of the sea can be a show in itself. The water hits against the rocks, rushes down the inner side and forms a beautiful crystal-clear pond about 4-feet deep that visitors absolutely adore.

A little further to the east there’s another beach. But this one is not for bathers. It’s rocky and dangerous. I asked one of the locals what they call that area and he said they called it “Sibuco”.

Now, before I went to Puerto Nuevo Beach —or “Playa Puerto Nuevo”, like the locals call it— I was told that this was a place where many people have drowned. So I asked around to learn why. It turns out that many people walk over the breakwater, where the open sea rushes onto the rocks. And, as you might imagine, if you fall in the water on the outer side of the breakwater you’re in for trouble.

So here’s my advise, if you decide to visit Puerto Nuevo Beach stay away from the breakwater! The part of the beach that’s right behind the breakwater is calm, crystal clear and beautiful; and the little pond that forms behind the breakwater is pure heaven! The sand is tan colored and a little on the coarse side.

As for Puerto Nuevo Beach in general, it’s one of those places that could be a lot better if the local government just put a little money and effort into it.

Esa es Vega Baja, Municipio del centro norte de Puerto Rico que ahora es más conocido como el pueblo donde se crio Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, mejor conocido como Bad Bunny, rapero, cantante y compositor puertorriqueño de 27 años que durante la pandemia ha elevado su carrera musical hasta las nubes.

Aunque nació en San Juan el 10 de marzo de 1994, Martínez creció en esta comunidad bañada por el océano Atlántico, específicamente en el barrio de Almirante Sur, con sus padres y dos hermanos menores, Benie y Bysael, publica el portal The Fader, a quienes considera sus mejores amigos. Él declaró haber crecido en un hogar tranquilo y feliz, diciendo que “no era de los chicos que solían andar en la calle, me gustaba estar en casa con mi familia”, indicó en entrevista a Rolling Stone.

Su carácter hogareño también proviene de la calidez íntima que sentía recibir de Vega Baja, pueblo que considera adherido a su sensibilidad más profunda. “Soy de Vega Baja, un área pequeña que no es una metrópolis como San Juan, que es de donde provienen la mayoría de los artistas del género. Eso es lo más sorprendente e increíble de todo esto, yo vine de la nada misma. Cuando estaba en la escuela solía pararme en el balcón de mi casa cantando y la gente se acercaba a escucharme”, indicó a Rolling Stone.

Sus mayores atractivos

“Vega Baja es una ciudad moderna, culta, ordenada, saludable, vibrante y segura, con una economía dinámica y con muchas oportunidades para la convivencia y los negocios”, indica el portal del Municipio local, que agrega que esta localidad fundada en 1776 es conocida por sus fértiles vegas (terrenos bajos, llanos, fértiles y generalmente a la orilla de un río), las cuales han estado habitadas desde hace unos 2. 400 años.

Sus playas son bien conocidas por los puertorriqueños, además de una zona histórica, donde despuntan edificios históricos como la Casa Alcaldía, construida en 1925; la Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario, declarada Monumento Histórico en 1984; el Teatro Fénix, levantado en 1917, y el Teatro América, con su llamativo estilo art-deco, que fue construido en 1940.

Por otra parte, el Museo Casa Alonso es también muy visitado, ya que conserva el estilo arquitectónico criollo utilizado por las familias adineradas del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX.

Y la Farmacia Náter tiene la peculiaridad que lleva desde 1873 operando y conserva parte de los muebles, utensilios y el piso antiguo de la época.

Vega Baja es además conocida como la “Capital del Ecoturismo” en Puerto Rico, ya que posee cinco reservas naturales: pantano Cibuco, bosque La Vega, río Indio y la reserva agrícola del Cibuco y la reserva laguna Tortuguero.

En esta última reserva se encuentra El Manantial, una piscina natural de agua cristalina que es alimentada por un manantial natural, rodeada de mucha vegetación. Este lugar era conocido como “secreto” debido a que muy pocas personas lo conocían, pero por redes sociales se ha corrido la voz sobre él y ahora es uno de los lugares más populares. Muy cerca opera el Jardín Botánico El Trece, un lugar recreativo donde, además de canchas de baloncesto, existe un hermoso bosque donde los visitantes disfrutan de los manantiales y del río.

Charco Azul y Puerto Nuevo son también balnearios naturales próximos rodeados de vegetación.

Sin embargo, los turistas con gustos extremos tienen su muy particular atractivo en la llamada Roca Norte, tal como se conoce a una pared montañosa de roca caliza casi vertical donde los escaladores desafían sus habilidades. Abarca 39 rutas de escalada deportiva donde se ha desarrollado esta práctica con el apoyo de operadores especializados.

Lo curioso es que este espacio nació recién en el 2017, cuando el destructivo huracán María “despejó” la superficie de la montaña hasta dejarla adecuada para esta actividad. Así que ese es el único atractivo vegabajino que no acompañó a Bad Bunny en su infancia, pero seguramente ya lo ha disfrutado. (I)
