Protests in Puerto Rico: what’s the joke on Telegram and Ricky Martin

The island is in deep crisis after the 2017 default and Hurricane Maria

Marches have been going on in Puerto Rico for a week now demanding the resignation of Governor Ricardo Rossello. The BBC explains why the inhabitants of the island are unhappy and what Ricky Martin has to do with it.

What angered Puerto Ricans?

Governor Rossello was at the center of a scandal last Saturday when more than 900 pages of the governor’s group correspondence with aides and members of the administration on Telegram leaked to the press.

Officials joked about the victims of Hurricane Maria, which claimed the lives of 3 thousand people in 2017, follows from the correspondence.

They also discussed plans to “shoot” the mayor of San Juan, the Puerto Rican capital, and joked about the sexual orientation of island-born singer Ricky Martin.

Ricky Martin and other celebrities supported the protesters

Thousands took to the streets demanding Rossello’s resignation.

Local celebrities supported the protests, and Ricky Martin marched to the governor’s residence.

“They made fun of the dead, our women and the LGBT community <…> We’ve had enough. This can’t go on,” the singer wrote on his Twitter.

How did the authorities react?

Rossello apologized for the messages and promised more transparency in his administration, but refused to resign.

Two members of his cabinet who participated in the correspondence resigned.

The scandal confirmed US President Donald Trump’s fears of “mismanagement and corruption” in the administration of the territory, the White House said in an official statement.

Fighting for statehood was one of Rossello’s promises.

Earlier, two former Rossello administration officials were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy and embezzlement of millions of dollars from the budget.

How are America and Puerto Rico connected?

Puerto Rico has been an unincorporated territory of the United States since 1898.

The inhabitants of the island have American passports but cannot vote in presidential elections.

  • In a referendum in Puerto Rico, they decided to join the USA
  • Not 64, but 2975: the number of victims of the hurricane in Puerto Rico was underestimated by 50 times. How is this possible?
  • Trump: 3,000 Puerto Rico hurricane deaths are a Democrat fiction

In a referendum in 2017, the inhabitants of the island voted to petition the US Congress to make it the 51st state of America.
