Our Mission

Angels For Animals, PR is a 501 (c)(3) and Puerto Rico  1101.01(a)(2) tax exempt charitable organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, sterilization and rehousing of abandoned, stray and abused dogs in Puerto Rico.  Our focus is to provide  sanctuary and veterinary care to these displaced animals and prepare them for adoption.

There are over 500,000 stray animals on the island that have been displaced or abandoned due to various reasons including  Hurricane Maria,  earthquakes, local cultural norms and now the COVID 19 pandemic. Our vision is two fold- we want to humanely decrease the population of strays on the island through education while also developing an infrastructure to financially support all efforts to vaccinate and sterilize animals island wide. We currently provide food, quality shelter, healthcare and rehabilitation for all of our rescues. Additionally, we work closely with the animals in our care to give them the best chance at a quality life and placement in permanent housing. Our efforts extend beyond the basic needs to include socialization, therapy and often times professional obedience training. Once the dog is healthy and ready for placement, we coordinate safe transportation to rescue partners in the states, foster care givers or qualified adopters.

About Us

COMMUNITIES SAVE LIVES

We want every community to feel empowered to help those who have the hearts & capacity to save animals. Our community is small but mighty. We are committed to saving animals & supporting other efforts to control the overpopulation of stray or unwanted animals any way we can. Your contributions will be used to support the  individuals & organizations dedicated to saving &  supporting stray/unwanted animals in need.

OUR MOTIVATION

In Puerto Rico, after Hurricane Maria, there were hundreds of strays &  many are still with local rescues waiting to be adopted while others were not so lucky and didn’t make it to a rescue. They are still out there or possibly will be caught and taken to a shelter. Shelters here are 11-24 hour KILL SHELTERS. Many animals are being cycled through as I type. It is sad because they do not give an owner a chance here to locate their animal. No collar, on the street – the dog is usually treated like a stray- either left to survive or taken to the shelter.  Some are lucky enough to be rescued and will go to a foster, sanctuary or a rescue who has time and space to handle the case. Several individuals on the island provide shelter &  food for these animals but they are now out of money &  space. They need people to adopt the animals or contribute so they can continue their work.  Animals are running out of time. This includes litters of puppies. There is not discriminat

OUR PLAN IS SIMPLE

EDUCATION : educate the island community about the importance of vaccinations, sterilization & humane treatment of animals

FUNDING:  locate funds to help cover costs of vet care  for the island strays, for lower income families and other active rescue organizations who have no time to fundraise

UNIFY: Identify and help build a more succinct community of rescues on the island that work together to advocate for animals left behind & alone with no voice & no protection 

CREATE & DEVELOP: develop programs & build clinics that support rescue operations across the island  

NON PROFIT: We are a non profit organization established to help decrease the abused, stray and abandoned animals in Puerto Rico. We are registered as a 501 (c) (3) non profit corporation as well as an 1101.01(a)(2)

Where we were living at the time.  We all noticed the new dog roaming the streets. He was friendly but scared and enjoyed meeting everyone.  At first many thought the pup had a home and was just lost.  We all watched

This website was built initially to save an amazing dog, STELLA. One day a dog started showing up in San Juan Puerto Rico? Where we were living at the time.  We all noticed the new dog roaming the streets. He was friendly but scared and enjoyed meeting everyone.  At first many thought the pup had a home and was just lost.  We all watched for him daily and he kept showing up. As days passed, he was around more and spotted at the park most often called Stella Maris. He was in the street, by the beach, in front of stores… he had made friends and in the mornings for his food he knew where to go. At night someone else was feeding him.  He was making his rounds to survive.  As a community, we needed to help. No one could find an owner and no one came to look for him. A few times he came close to death by car. We wanted to save him so the mission began. Although sweet, he would not let you get too close but if you had a pup or a child, he would come say hi and follow until another happy combo showed up.  It was evident he needed to get off the streets soon or he could end up somewhere with no way to be saved. A few of us, with the common goal decided we would try to catch him.  It took several days, chats, texts and phone calls as well as a few early mornings. Our community joined forces and one afternoon after an unsuccessful morning attempt, one of us was able to put a leash on him and take him to a vet. That text message was the best news I had that day. We named the pup Stella. Stella is our inspiration to begin this non profit organization and develop this web site!! Sharing this story and others is important so you know why we have the passion we do. Help us save these animals one by one.  TOGETHER, we will continue to address the issues causing the increased # of strays on the island and save as many animals as possible in the interim. We rescue dogs, support non profit animal rescue operations and most of all work together to make the biggest impact!

Part 1: Animal Charity Campaign Ideas

To celebrate the launch of our brand new Charity PR Insights page we are running a series of posts featuring some of our favourite charity campaign ideas of all time.

With so many charities and worthy causes out there the big challenge for any marketer in the sector is “how can you make your campaign stand out?” While there is no simple answer many charities have made their mark in a number of creative ways.

In this post our focus is animal charities. From celebrity endorsed PR campaigns to local marketing initiatives – campaigners and fundraisers in this area have been hugely successful raising awareness and increasing support in a number of creative ways.

1) Battersea Dogs & Cats Home

Political Manifesto

With the 2015 general election looming Battersea Dogs & Cats Home designed their own Manifesto, which was sent to MPs and Prospective Parliamentary Candidates in every constituency of the UK.

The manifesto itself was designed as an informative political wall calendar featuring Battersea’s canine and feline friends. It’s specific the aim is to influence MPs in the next Parliament by highlighting key welfare issues.

Why we loved this

Developing a campaign around a major national news story is always a good tactic for generating media coverage. What we liked in particular about this idea is it incorporates the charities key messages and is an extremely creative way of directly reaching out to politicians.

2) Blue Cross

Celebrity Endorsement

Peter O’Sullevan announced the proceedings of the sales from his autobiography – A Racing Autobiography: 25 Years – would go to Blue Cross and six other charities that care for the welfare of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules.

Why we loved this

All PR professionals know that there are few more effective ways of generating high-level media coverage than getting a celebrity to support your cause or back your campaign.

For O’Sullevan to donate both his time and money to support a cause he is passionate about is not only an extremely compelling story, but a strong endorsement for Blue Cross and the six other charities working to support needy horses.

3) Cats Protection

Charity Magazine

In the age of ‘content marketing’ where brands are falling over themselves to develop creative content to engage audiences it’s humbling to think that Cat Protection have been doing it for decades – since 1931 to be precise!

The Cat magazine is full of news, views and features and has been informing and entertaining cat lovers all over the UK for years. With subscription money of the magazine going directly to Cat Protection not only does the publication generate revenue for the charity, but it acts as a vehicle to engage and enhance relationships with supporters.

The Cat Magazine is an example of one of the best supporter engagement tools in charity marketing.

4) The Dogs Trust

Wedding Favours

Getting married soon? Forget giving your guests wrapped chocolates or mini liquors  – you can now support a charity like The Dogs Trust by buying specially designed wedding favours.

From lapel pins and exclusively designed doggy bride and groom cards – your guests will know that by attending your big day they’ve also aided in the provision of bedding, toys, medical treatment and behaviour training for many dogs.

Why we loved this

Fundraising isn’t easy so this is a great, creative and thoughtful way to raise money and awareness for your cause. This idea certainly has the feel good factor.

5) Guide Dogs for the blind

YouTube Channel

Online video content is one of the web’s most powerful engagement tools – yet surprisingly relatively few charities create truly engaging and useful video content.

Guide Dogs for The Blind, however, are extremely strong on this front. Their YouTube channel has had around 828k views and it’s full of interesting vlogs, behind the scenes videos and entertaining virals.

Great video content covering a range of subjects and important issues.

6) PDSA – PAW Report

Commissioned report/survey

The PDSA exists to care for the pets of people in need. They provide veterinary services to their sick and injured animals and promote responsible pet ownership.

Since 2011 they have published an annual PDSA Animal Wellbeing Report that aims to provide a unique and comprehensive insight into animal wellbeing in the UK. It is the biggest survey of it’s kind and since it was launched in 2011 PDSA (in conjunction with YouGov) have surveyed over 21,000 pet owners.

Why we loved this

Aside from being an extremely valuable piece of research, by producing new annual reports the PDSA are able to position themselves firmly at the heart of the debate, reinforcing their commitment to change and improving the lives of animals.

7) Retired Greyhound Trust

Anniversary campaign

In 2015 The Retired Greyhound Trust is celebrating its 40th birthday. To mark the occasion they have a load of fun activities planned so that everyone who is a greyhound fan can take part in our celebration.

Among the events planned include:

  • The Greyhound Blessing at Worcester Cathedral
  • The Greyhound Extravaganza
  • The Scottish Greyhound Gathering
  • The RGT Ruby Ball
  • The Great Greyhound Gathering

On their website they also state they will “have an expanded issues of Homer magazine, which will bring the celebration into your home.”

Why we loved this

Linking charity events to anniversaries or birthdays can provide a strong ‘feel good’ hook and the Retired Greyhound Trust look like they will be entering their 40s with a bang.

8) RSPCA

Engaging infographic

The RCPCA Homes for Horses campaign highlights some of the heartbreaking conditions suffered by horses around the UK. According to their figures there are 4,500 horses identified as being at risk in England and Wales and in 2014 over 75 thousand horses were reported as neglected.

The campaign aims to help horses in a number of ways from finding dedicated and experienced horse handlers willing to foster a horse to asking for donations – including equipment for horses, ponies and donkeys.

Why we loved this

Another important campaign with some great video content and compelling calls to action. We also loved their use of an infographic to convey some of the more hard hitting stats.

9) Save the Tigers

Setting a deadline to strengthen call to action

A hundred years ago there were 100,000 tigers in the wild. Today there are as few as 3,200.

Save Tigers Now is a global campaign by 
World Wildlife Fund and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Their goal is to build political, financial and public support to double the number of wild tigers by 2022, the next Year of the Tiger.

Why we loved this

The save the Tiger appeal has everything going for it from strong celebrity endorsement, engaging video content and a great website.

The wording of the campaign and the ‘call to action’ is also particularly strong, setting out a clear date and objective to aim towards.

10) Spana

Competition

SPANA focuses on helping working animals throughout the world. Millions of people depend on animals for their livlihoods, yet many lack access to professional veterinary care.

To combat this SPANA funds a vital network of veterinary centres and mobile clinics throughout the world that provide free care for working animals. They also run education programmes that reach tens of thousands of children each year teaching respect and compassion for animals.

To encourage donations this year they are running their biggest ever spring raffle.

Why we loved this

Finding creative ways to raise funds for important causes isn’t easy – this is a great fun competition that also offers supporters a real incentive to buy a ticket with a £3000 first prize on offer.

11) The Donkey Santuary

Local engagement

The Donkey Sanctuary was founded in 1969 by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen, MBE. She dedicated her life to championing donkeys, and it is through her devotion that the Sanctuary grew to be the international charity it is today.

To transform the quality of life for donkeys, mules and people worldwide through greater understanding, collaboration and support, and by promoting lasting, mutually life-enhancing relationships.

Why we loved this

Local engagement should not be over looked as a key marketing tactic – even by nationally focused charities.

The Donkey Sanctuary have strong connections with communities throughout the country and have a great events section on their site. Upcoming highlights include Ivebridge I Love Donkey Seessions, Donkey Grooming in Sidmouth and Easter Basket Making in Devon.

12) The Zoological Society, London

Strong social media presence

Founded in 1826, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is an international scientific, conservation and educational charity whose mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats.

Their mission is realised through our groundbreaking science, our active conservation projects in more than 50 countries and our two Zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.

Why we loved this

First class engaging social media content.  From competitions to win free tickets to London Zoo to behind the scenes glimpses of how to build a Madagascan forest in the heart of London it’s no surprise they have over 12k followers.

Through their channels they are also able to promote important campaigns such as Lions400 aimed at securing the future of the majestic Asiatic Lion.

“There is no evidence THAT COVID-19 CAN BE TRANSMITTED FROM PETS”

The World Small Animal Veterinary Organization (WSAVA) is in a hurry to inform pet owners that a dog that died in Hong Kong was quarantined due to positive test for SARS-CoV-2, was released from quarantine two weeks later with a subsequent negative test. The dog, a 17-year-old Pomeranian, showed no clinical signs of COVID-19. However, the animal had age-related illnesses unrelated to the viral infection, which are believed to have led to the dog’s death. There is no evidence that the dog has contracted COVID-19, and could also transmit the viral infection to humans.
On March 19, the Hong Kong Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation (AFCD) announced that a second dog, a German Shepherd, has tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. The animal was quarantined after its owner was diagnosed with COVID-19. Although the dog tested positive, it showed no clinical signs of the disease. Another dog in the household tested negative for SARS-CoV-2. This animal is under quarantine and is undergoing appropriate research.
WSAVA President Dr. Shane Ryan said: “Despite the fact that we do not know much about COVID-19, but we know for sure that the Pomeranian did not die due to coronavirus infection, the second dog does not show clinical signs of the disease, and there is no possibility of its transmission to other animals or people. Observations clearly show that there is no possibility of infection with COVID-19 from pets.”
WSAVA says its mission is to support veterinarians who care for pets around the world. The organization is urging pet owners not to panic and instead continue to take care of their pets and enjoy being with them. In these difficult times, WSAVA says, pets are playing a positive role in bringing warmth to people in lockdown.

Dr. Michael Lappin, Committee Chair One Health WSAVA and Dr. Mary Marcondes, Co-Chair of the WSAVA Scientific Committee recommend that veterinarians educate pet owners on the following:
• The need to share pets with the owner in self-isolation and quarantine
• The need for proper hygiene when dealing with pets
• The need for timely care of pets in the event of hospitalization of the owner
• The need for timely information on all questions from a veterinarian

March 13 at IDEXX Laboratories, an international supplier of veterinary laboratory equipment, reported thousands of studies of biomaterial samples of dogs and cats in order to develop a test system for the detection of SARS-CoV-2. The tests did not give positive results.

Dr Ryan continued: “We are extremely concerned about reports of pets being abandoned, killed or abandoned by their owners due to unfounded fear of contracting the corona virus. In addition to causing suffering to their pets, people deprive themselves of the opportunity to communicate with animals, which is especially important in the current conditions of limited communication with other people.”
“We urge pet owners to heed the advice of veterinarians and follow our recommendations to ensure the safety of themselves and their pets.”
WSAVA represents over 200,000 veterinarians worldwide. Its primary mission is to develop the WSAVA Global Guidelines on key issues in pain management, nutrition and vaccination, and to promote and provide professional education.
