El Yunque National Park

El Yunque Rainforest is the only tropical rainforest under the protection of the US Forest Service and also the largest nature reserve in densely-populated Puerto Rico. It is situated in the mist-wreathed Luquillo Mountains where year-round precipitation ensures lush, green landscapes and a healthy diversity of animal life. This includes mongooses, non-venomous snakes, the rare Puerto Rican Parrot and the Coqui frog whose distinctive croak provides El Yunque’s soundtrack.
El Portal Rain Forest Center provides a good introduction to the area. There you can pick up a map and set out on well-defined walking trails which will take you past such sights as the La Coca Falls and the observation points of Yokahú Tower and Mount Britton Lookout Tower.

La Fortaleza (The Fortress)

The Wedgwood blue and white Santa Catalina Palace was built in 1533 and makes an impressive sight as you approach through a narrow Old San Juan street. While the building exudes an air of calm authority, it occupies a site that was long one of the most contested strategic positions in the Caribbean: La Fortaleza. And you can still see stone fortifications built by the Spanish, brooding above the waves.

Old San Juan

Old San Juan sits on a small island guarding the entrance to the Bahía de San Juan, the “rich port” which gave Puerto Rico its name. Its strategic position was backed up by fortifications include the forbidding San Felipe del Morro fort at the tip of the island, as well as San Cristóbal fort and La Fortaleza, now the Governor’s residence.
Inland, the compact grid of hilly, narrow streets, with their colorful houses and elegant wrought-iron balconies, represents one of the oldest and best-preserved town centers in the Western Hemisphere. Two historic houses of worship bookend the center: in the north, the simple white exterior of the San José Church and the comparative grandeur of the older Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, built in 1521, in the south. The latter contains the tomb of Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León.

Rio Camuy Cave Park (Parque Nacional de las Cavernas del Río Camuy)

You don’t have to be a seasoned spelunker to enjoy Río Camuy Cave Park, one of the largest such sites in the world. The caves, sculpted by the underground river from which it derives its name, were only discovered in 1958 and haven’t yet been fully surveyed.
The most accessible part is Cueva Clara. Descending into this subterranean chamber, pierced by shafts of sunlight, lined with luxuriant ferns and echoing with bat screeches, is an unforgettable experience.
Back on ground level you can peer into the enormous Tres Pueblos Sinkhole or set off on a walking trail to explore more of this thickly-forested area.

The Castillo San Felipe del Morro

Castillo San Felipe del Morro, also known as “El Morro,” was constructed and expanded by Spanish engineers, soldiers, laborers, and enslaved workers in phases from 1539 to 1790. This fort was named in honor of King Phillip II and served as a military base to protect the entrance of the island from Spain’s rivals. Over its centuries of expansion and reconstruction, the thick walls repelled thousands of cannonballs and its defenders held off attacks by Sir Francis Drake and other famous explorers and military leaders. During an attack in 1598, the English captured the fort for a short time by landing soldiers on land rather than attacking it from the sea. During the Spanish American War in 1898, the United States became the only country to take the fort owing to the advances in modern naval ships that made forts like this obsolete. However, the fort was the site of an active military installation in World War II as American troops used this location to listen for German submarines and also manned a coastal battery to protect from any possible attack. The fort has been operated by the National Park Service since 1961. In 1983, the fort was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The fort is one of less than a dozen man-made UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the US.

El Morro is one of less than a dozen man-made UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the United States. The construction of the fort began in 1539 and continued in phases for the next 250 years with multiple stages of construction and reconstruction. Spanish conquistadors in Puerto Rico such as Diego Ramos Orozoco saw the need for a fort to protect Spanish ships from rivals and pirates, leading to the modest stone walls that were built in the early and mid 16th century to be replaced by a massive complex by the start of the 17th century. Construction began in earnest in 1589 with over 150 slaves and dozens of skilled workers following plans created by Juan de Tejeda and Juan Antonelli in 1587. The fort included two hall bastions called “tejedas” in honor of their designer.

Construction was slow and the fort was not yet complete in 1595 when it was attacked by an English flotilla under Sir Francis Drake. The fort was attacked a few years later by England’s general George Clifford who found success by avoiding a frontal attack and sending troops by land to attack from the rear. The next attack on the fort was by the Dutch and lasted three weeks before the attackers withdrew. The British once again attacked in 1797 as part of the larger series of battles known as the Anglo-Spanish War. General Harvey and Abercromby sent nearly 7,000 English troops to the island but failed to conquer it.

Today, the fort includes interpretive signs, museum exhibits, and also offers tours led by the National Park Service.

Castle los Tres Reyes del Morro

Morro Castle Spanish: Castillo de los Tres Reyes Magos del Morro is a picturesque fortress that guards the entrance to Havana Bay in Havana, Cuba. Juan Bautista Antonelli, an Italian engineer, was commissioned to design the structure. When it was built in 1589year, Cuba was under the control of Spain. The castle, named after the biblical Magi, was later captured by the British in 1762. [1]

View from La Cabana

Morro Castle in Havana shares the name with other structures in Santiago de Cuba and Castillo de San Felipe del Morro in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In this case, “Morro” in Spanish means a stone that is very visible from the sea and therefore serves as a navigational landmark. [2]

Situated on a promontory on the opposite side of the harbor from Old Havana it can be viewed from miles around as it dominates the port entrance.

Built originally in 1589 in response to raids on Havana harbour, El Morro protected the mouth of the harbor with a chain being strung across the water at a fort on La Punta.

The Seven Years’ War

Morro Castle at night. Main articles: Battle of Havana (1762) and Britain in the Seven Years’ War

This is the first in the fighting in 1762, while commanded by Luis Vicente de Velasco e Isla. A British expedition against Cuba under Lord Albemarle landed at Cojimar east of Havana and attacked the fortress from its land side. The fort fell when the British successfully quarried one of their bastions. When the British handed over the island back in 1763 to Spain, a fortress at La Cabana was built to prevent it from happening again.

Inside the gate is an exhibition on the lighthouses of Cuba – El Morro, where the lighthouse school was once located. There was actually a watchtower here until the British blew it up in their successful siege in 1762. The Faro Castillo del Morro lighthouse was added in 1846.

The cannons near the fort are now badly rusted, but the walls are in great shape. The fort has central barracks up to four stories high. A small underwater archeology exhibition is also located here. Worthy are the old toilets and their chute into the sea, as well as two sets of doors and a drawbridge mechanism. The office of the current Harbor Master is still housed in the fortress. A plaque dedicated by the ambassador of the United Kingdom commemorates the 1762 siege and a small memorial is located between two strong powder rooms in the North East Bastion.

A small turret at the end of the wall overlooks the sea, crashing into the rocks 20 meters below and taking in the size of a huge dry moat. The opposite side of the moat holds more modern guns and cannons, La Bateria de Velasco, and offers a breathtaking view down to Cojimar.

Matches of books and films

In 1839 the Cuban writer José Antonio Echeverría (1815-1885) published his only novel, Antonelli, in the magazine La Cartera Cubana in three parts. [3] A historical novel in the tradition of Walter Scott, Antonelli describes a love triangle between Antonelli, a Spanish soldier, and the planter’s daughter they both love. Morro Castle is the setting for many of the book’s events, including its tragic ending.

Morro Castle appears in Richard Henry Dana’s account of his trip to Cuba, To Cuba and back.

Morro Castle appears in MacDougal’s Littell textbook ?En Espanol! Level 2.

Morro Castle appears in the film Ghost Switches (1940), in the background as Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard enter the harbor on a ship.

For his life, the Castro regime imprisoned the Cuban poet and novelist Reinaldo Arenas (1943-1990) to El Morro Castle for his homosexuality. The film version of Arenas’s autobiography, Before Night Falls, starring Javier Bardem, features scenes set in El Morro Castle Prison. (The fortress in Mexico City doubled for the prison, since the filmmakers were not allowed to shoot in Cuba.)
