High school football: San Juan outlasts Emery in 2A playoff semifinals

San Juan’s football team proved that there’s still a winning formula even when you give up seven touchdowns — just score eight touchdowns.

That’s exactly what the Broncos did Friday night in the 2A state tournament semifinals as it survived an absolutely wild 48 minutes of football against Emery holding on for the 56-48 victory after icing the win with an onside kick recovery.

“It’s crazy, that’s all I know. It’s a lot to process right now,” said San Juan coach Barkley Christensen. “There’s no style points in the playoffs, and of course we’re happy to advance our ticket to the state championship, survive and advance. But not super satisfying winning like that.”

San Juan never trailed after taking a 14-7 lead in a game played at Southern Utah University, but Emery also never went away either in a game filled with offensive fireworks. In addition to the 15 touchdowns, San Juan and Emery combined for 1,201 yards of total offense, 904 of which was through the air.

Emery’s Wade Stilson passed for 528 yards and five TDs while San Juan’s Parker Snyder threw for 376 yards and three scores. Snyder also rushed for two touchdowns, with Zack Conway rushing for 137 yards and three more scores.

The teams by no means scored every time they touched the ball, combining for seven turnovers and nine punts.

Christensen said against the better teams this season his defense has been a bend-don’t-break unit, and while it broke way too often in the semifinals it secured a clutch turnover when they needed it most late in the fourth quarter.

After San Juan went ahead 49-41 at the 5:15 mark of the fourth quarter, it regained possession shortly after on an interception by Garret Young with 4:39 remaining near midfield.

“That was a big turnover, I think that was probably the turning point in the game,” said Christensen.

Six plays later Snyder marched into the end zone to stretch the lead back to a two score game at 56-41 with 2:53 left.

Emery did successfully march down and score again on Stilson’s fifth TD pass of the game, but only 22 seconds remained and its onside kick attempt was unsuccessful as the Spartans’ massive upset bid came up short.

Emery was making its first semifinal appearance since 1999 on Friday, and without much playoff tradition to fall back on the past two decades most viewed the Spartans as a massive underdog.

After a bit of a slow start falling behind 21-7 in the first quarter, Emery just kept matching San Juan virtually score for score during the rest of the first half.

San Juan led 43-35 at the half with the teams combining for 862 yards of total offense.

After combining for 78 points in the first half, incredibly neither scored in third quarter. The pace picked up in the fourth for an exciting finish.

Emery’s last-second touchdown pushed the total over 100 points as the teams combined for the eighth-highest scoring playoff game in state history.

San Juan will now turn its attention to Beaver in the 2A state championship, which will be a rematch of last year’s title game won by the Broncos. The teams met earlier this year as well with San Juan winning 35-27.

Travis Wood ran for 232 yards and three touchdowns to lead Tesoro to a win over crosstown rival San Juan Hills in the Battle for the Bell Friday at Tesoro High.

No. 16 Tesoro (4-2) stopped San Juan Hills (0-7) on five fourth-down attempts.

Sophomore quarterback Cash O’Byrne made his varsity debut for Tesoro and threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Mason Wolfe.

San Juan Hills quarterback Michael Tollefson threw for 200 yards with a touchdown and ran for a touchdown. Mater Dei transfer Christopher Williams had 89 yards receiving with a touchdown for the Stallions.

Tesoro has won three of the last four games against San Juan Hills. The Titans will play No. 20 Trabuco Hills in their final nonleague game Friday, Oct. 7.

In other games Friday:

Dana Hills 35, Beckman 7: Dana Hills used a well-balanced attack on offense to beat Beckman at Dana Hills High.

Conner Vernon threw three touchdown passes for Dana Hills (4-2) and Christian Guarascio ran for 145 yards with three total touchdowns.

Guarascio, who leads Orange County in rushing yards, had two touchdowns on the ground and caught a 16-yard touchdown pass. Blaize Bolter and San Juan Hills transfer Noah Kucera caught touchdowns for the Dolphins.

Kucera, who was playing his first game after sitting out the first five due to transfer rules, also had an interception.

Laguna Hills 42, University 0: Laguna Hills extended its winning streak to six with a dominant win over University at University High.

Troy Leigber had three touchdowns for Laguna Hills (6-0). Kaden Austin threw two touchdown passes for the Hawks in the first half.

No. 8 San Clemente 35, Steele Canyon 0: San Clemente snapped a two-game losing streak with an easy win over Steele Canyon of Spring Valley on the road.

The Tritons had four rushing touchdowns. JSerra transfer Dylan Mills ran for a touchdown and threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Reid Kotiranta in his season debut.

Broderick Redden, Aiden Rubin and Thomas Hartanov each had rushing touchdowns for San Clemente (5-2).

Aliso Niguel 28, Alta Loma 7: Aliso Niguel bounced back from a tough loss to Fountain Valley last week with a win over Alta Loma of Rancho Cucamonga at Aliso Niguel High.

Hunter Najm completed 11 of 17 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown for Aliso Niguel (4-2). Ayden Sanchez threw two touchdown passes on trick plays in his season debut.

Dylan Kissen had 90 yards receiving with two touchdowns and Jack Gill had 139 all-purpose yards with a rushing touchdown.

In the Orange Coast League:

St. Margaret’s 28, Estancia 19: Owen Binder had three touchdown receptions to lead St. Margaret’s to its first win of the season.

Binder caught two touchdown passes from Max Ruff and had a 74-yard touchdown reception on a double pass by Maverick Young.

Ruff threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Derek Smith in the fourth quarter for St. Margaret’s (1-6, 1-2).

Santa Ana 45, Calvary Chapel 0: Sergio Torres had two rushing and two passing touchdowns for Santa Ana in a rout of Calvary Chapel at Santa Ana Stadium.

Jayderick Garcia ran for over 180 yards with a touchdown for Santa Ana (5-2, 3-0), who have won four consecutive games. The Saints had 255 yards of offense in the first half and held Calvary Chapel (3-4, 2-1) to under 50 yards in that span.

Michael Hughes had a blocked punt for Santa Ana and Joseph Foster had a receiving touchdown right before halftime.

In the Empire League:

Crean Lutheran 42, Kennedy 7: Gavin Rogers threw for 352 yards and five touchdowns for Crean Lutheran in a rout of Kennedy at Western High.

Ty Benefield caught five passes for 191 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Crean Lutheran (6-0, 1-0). Ben Buettell had a 72-yard touchdown reception for the Saints. Buettell also had an interception he returned 47 yards for a touchdown.

The win was just the second Empire League win for Crean Lutheran since joining the league in 2018.

Pacifica 31, Valencia 21: Ryan Rizk had two interceptions that he returned for touchdowns for Pacifica in a win over Valencia at Bolsa Grande High.

Noah Salas ran for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass to Cody Dykema for Pacifica (3-3, 1-0), who led 27-0 midway through the second quarter.

Dylan Draft threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Terry in the second half for Valencia (1-5, 0-1).

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 42, Buena Park 6: The Raiders (5-1, 1-0) moved their winning streak to five games with a win over the Coyotes (3-3, 0-1) at La Habra High.

Nick Fernandez rushed for 176 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries. Quarterback Landon Martin completed 10 of 17 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown. Olin Morales Hyder had two receptions for 77 yards and touchdown.

Sonora’s defensive standouts were Ernest Gabriel Bagdonoff, Diego Rosiles and Ernest Love.

Sonora plays Fullerton in a league game Friday. Oct. 7 at Fullerton High. Buena Park has a league home game against Troy on Friday, Oct. 7.

Sunny Hills 14, Fullerton 13: Kaito Inoue scored the go-ahead touchdown for the Lancers (2-4, 1-0) with 2:30 left in the game and Carson Singleton recovered a Fullerton (2-4, 0-1) onside kick with 45 seconds remaining at Buena Park High.

Fullerton is home against Sonora on Friday, Oct. 7. Sunny Hills plays at La Habra on Friday, Oct. 7.

In the Orange League:

Anaheim 37, Savanna 14: The Colonists (1-5, 1-0) got their first win as Arjae Allen scored two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving, and Sotero Galeana rushed for two touchdowns in the win over the Rebels (0-6, 0-1) at Glover Stadium.

Anaheim, which last season was 8-5 and a CIF Southern Section Division 13 semifinalist, plays at Century on Friday, Oct. 7 in a league game. Savanna plays Santa Ana Valley in a league game Friday, Oct. 7 at Glover Stadium.

No. 24 Western 61, Century 0: Anthony Luna completed 10 of 11 passes, five for touchdowns, as the Pioneers (5-1) won at Century (0-6, 0-1).

Five Pioneers caught touchdown passes: Brycen Faulk, Drew Faulkner, Josh Faulkner, Quimari Shemwell and Ayden Ware. Shemwell had two touchdown receptions. Desmin Joshway Fairley returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and Malik Benjamin scored on a 58-yard run on his only carry of the game.

Western plays at home in a league game Thursday against Magnolia. Century has a league home game Friday against Anaheim.

In nonleague games:

Esperanza 21, Brea Olinda 14: Jess Deunsing scored on touchdown runs of 5 and 13 yards and Aaron Forsgren scored on a 3-yard run for the Aztecs (2-4) in their win over the Wildcats (3-3).

Brea quarterback Cullen Doyle threw two touchdown passes to Axl Rodriguez.

Deunsing has scored seven rushing touchdowns.

Esperanza plays at undefeated Yorba Linda in a nonleague game Friday, Oct. 7. Brea has a nonleague home game Friday, Oct. 7 against El Dorado.

Marina 35, Ocean View 0: The Vikings (1-5) got their first win with the victory at Ocean View (1-6).

Marina safety Shayden Sorochman had an interception. Defensive end Jack Hall and linebacker Jake Russell also made defensive contributions to the shutout.

The Vikings play a nonleague game Friday, Oct. 7 at Charter Oak (6-0). Ocean View has a bye next week before opening Pac 4 League play at Westminster (6-0).
