One of the island’s most wild beaches. There is plenty of wilderness to explore complemented by breathtaking views. There are parking areas but they get full during the high season (summer) so make sure to get there early. Anytime before 9 am should be good.

This beach does not look like the photos. It is dirty and smells bad. We even saw locals throwing their trash in the beach.

Long stretch of beach and nice view of the lighthouse

We parked once we saw an available spot then realized there is a parking lot even closer. At least this gave us an opportunity to walk by the wetlands and see interesting birds on the water.

The name of the beach means dirty beach but it’s not dirty. Apparently it got its name from the seaweed. It’s a nice long expanse of beach with a view of the lighthouse. Many family and friend groups were there when we visited. I would recommend to groups and would visit again the next time we visit PR!

Terrible road but worth it.

After passing the really bad road and getting to the parking lot, the walk is very short to either the beach or the lighthouse. Beautiful sandy beach , kind of the little bay with cliffs on both ends.

Worth the Trek

We almost turned around because of the conditions of the road (hard packed dirt and potholes everywhere), but we decided to press on in our rented Nissan compact car and boy, was it worth it! From the salt flats to the incredible beach to the trails leading up to the lighthouse, this was one of our favorite excursions of our week in Puerto Rico! Manageable trip from a western or southwestern starting point.

Beautiful beach, but a trek to get to.

Beautiful beach and well worth the trek. We went on a weekday late morning and it was just starting to get busy. Have to park pretty far away and it’s a 25 minute walk in the sun to get to the beach. But the beach is beautiful and the water is great to swim in. There is some seaweed, but it was minimal. We didn’t have time to see the lighthouse or climb up for the cliff views, but we were told this was worth it too. If you are ok with the 25 minute walk (flat ground), then definitely do this!

We also visited on 04 Jan, and were disappointed as well; however, if you phone the number for Faro Los Morrillos (787-851-1025×4700), the message says they will be closed through the holiday and reopen Friday 07 January. Since these are the staff who unlock the gate, it now makes sense.

It’s 9:31 and the gate is not opened. Wasting precious time sitting here waiting for someone to open the gate. In years past the beach was always open.

Lovely beach. Been coming here since a child, always visit El Faro, then to La playuela. That is the real name. Its not playa sucia. Its actually Bahia sucia. La playuela is confused by many as playa sucia, but its not.

Playa Sucia means Dirty Beach

Smell is terrible and you leave there smelling like the dumpster of a seafood restaurant. The view is nice, but there are many other “nice views” to see. They named it playa sucia for a reason. Translates to Dirty Beach. It’s nasty don’t go.

Bring dog food and fresh water for the stray dogs

The drive was long and bumpy. Lots of fun birds and other wildlife to observe. There is a small pack of young, stray dogs by the parking lot at La Playuela who NEED HELP. Everyone there was leaving scraps for them, anything. Granola bars, chips, etc. They are starving and overheated. They are nice and drank lots of water right from my water bottles. Tourists and locals alike were broken-hearted in seeing this.

The beauty of the beach is tarnished by the lack of caring for the animals in Puerto Rico. How can you go into nature to enjoy the wonder of wildlife, yet ignore the animals that are dying and starving right in front of your eyes? The government needs to push for spaying and neutering programs and pass laws to punish animal abuse and abandonment.

PLEASE, if you are visiting in the area, bring dog food and lots of fresh water for the dogs. And if you know someone in rescue, please reach out to them to see about trapping them and getting them to a safe location and into loving homes. There are programs that will help relocate them to the mainland as well.

La Playuela Beach – looking from the cliffs to the west.

The more you see of Puerto Rico, the more you realize just how beautiful, and distinct it is. From the picturesque beaches found along its 501 km (311 miles) of coastline to the El Yunque National Forest – you would be hard-pressed not to find a place that you can fall in love with and create great memories.

One of the more popular seaside destinations with locals and tourists alike includes high cliff walls overlooking crashing waves, a lighthouse, and a crescent-shaped beach with white sand and turquoise waters.

La Playuela Beach (or Playa Sucia) in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, is located on the southwestern tip of the island, about an hour and a half from Rincón. The drive from Rincón takes you through Mayaqüez and then on a very scenic drive through Cabo Rojo, where you’ll drive past rolling hills with open fields of farm and ranch land.

The surrounding cliffs make for an easy hike before cooling off in the ocean below.

A place you really must visit to fully appreciate the raw beauty of nature.

Nestled along a crescent shoreline with a white sandy beach, you’ll find some shady spots where you can set up camp and relax and spend the day in the turquoise waters. Looking south from the beach, you’ll see cliffs on either side, accessible by several walking paths for easy hiking.

Atop one of them sits the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse (Faro Los Morrillos de Cabo Rojo or El Faro). So bring your camera and take the hike up the hill for some breathtaking photo opportunities.

When hiking up the trails, especially on the east side of the inlet, be on the lookout for Iguanas sunning on the rocks, or nesting beneath the brush along the cliff edges. Sometimes you can even see them scaling the cliff walls.

La Playuela Beach – Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico

There are many great photo opportunities from both the beach or up on the cliffs on either side. On the east side cliff (left if looking out from the beach), you can hike down to the shoreline below the cliff to a window in the sea wall, and a natural rock jetty leading out to the sea. Just be careful when the waves are crashing as the rocks can get slippery.

The beach is remotely located at the end RT 301, which will bring you to the parking lot for the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse. From there you’ll turn left along a very rough dirt road with some deep potholes but is safe for most vehicles. Parking fills up fast so you’ll want to get there early. Both the beach and parking are free, but there are no services such as public restrooms, showers, food services, or lifeguards. The beach is open during daylight hours, and if the road is closed, it probably means the beach has reached capacity.

A place to remember

From my whole week trip around Puerto Rico, I singled out the 2 most memorable: the island of Culebre and the city of Cabo Rojo with this amazing bay, which is located between the rocks overlooking the lighthouse. I didn’t want to leave because I liked this place so much. I recommend stopping at a salt factory on the way.

Many names Sucia

This beach has many names. Sucia seems to be the most popular name, but La Playuela is in use and La Playuela might be the true name. There are no facilities on this beach and parking can be tight. From time to time seaweed will be busy accumulating along the shore so be prepared for that. If you stop at the end of the day, then the bugs will start to come out. So give yourself time to get back to your car before the insects get bad if you parked far away. Be sure to check out a good hotel while you’re here and rocks to the west.

Beautiful beach, there are various seaweeds

Last Sunday I visited La Playuela (Playa Sucia beach) with my husband and children. I have been here before when I was a college student. But it was my first with children. I really like it with them. The beach can get wavy but on a sunny day like yesterday is just perfect. My child didn’t like the seaweed at all, but that’s ok because if you keep walking to the far end of the beach you have the seaweed section, free of charge, where crystal clear turquoise waters reign. Although, this is a nice section where people with boats like to dock (booo). So far Playa Sucia is beautiful! White powdery sand, clear waters and a bunch of dry trees that provide reasonable protection from the sun. Some have compartments strong enough to hang up a hammock and relax. You can also hike to the lighthouse from the beach. What I would love from this beach must have souls!

Amazing beach!!!

This beach is just great! Arrive early as there is not very good parking and make sure to bring your own water, food, chairs and umbrellas as there are no facilities and little in the shade. The color of the water is turquoise, Ocean calmness and warm water. Amazing beach. Definitely worth a visit!

Gorgeous with a twist

Playa Sucia in Cabo Rojo (Playuela) is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. However, it will take a little planning to enjoy it to the fullest. It is located in an area of the reserve, very remote from the rest of the areas of interest in Cabo Rojo. Definitely need a car. In addition, you must buy food and drinks, along with chairs and everything else you need to spend a good beach day. Due to its popularity, it’s best to go during the week and it’s already possible inside, as parking is limited and far from the entrance (for those who arrive late). On weekends, especially in summer, the beach is crowded, and you can always find a place to park. Arrive at 8am, choose a hotel close to the trees to cool off and leave until noon. There is a beautiful bacon at the top of the hill and some of the most amazing views. Walking minimum. Make sure to park at some sites.

Beautiful bay

Nice beach and fairly clean with lots of seaweed along the shore. The water is very warm this time of year, so not as refreshing on a hot day as other beaches outside the bay.

Beautiful beach. very photogenic. The beach is in a horseshoe-shaped cove. The water is clean and comfortable. I agree it’s a very nice beach if you’re in the area, but the view is too far away when staying at a hotel in San Juan. If you need a beach near SJ I recommend the Cerra Gordo National Park. Both parks here cover stocks. Cerra Gordo is clean enough to snorkel

We came here especially in the evening at sunset. A wonderful view, to be sure, pleases the eye. You really need to make a detour to the mark and turn in time to the nearest parking lot, next to the beach. Then walk up the hill for about 12-15 minutes. The lighthouse is closed, they are not allowed inside, the beauty is photos of the sun setting in the sea, if you are lucky with a clear sky. Lovers of sunset shots and just couples come here in advance. A very romantic look. Tip – stock up on repellent, as the sun falls, the midge becomes active and bites hard. I got hit on the forehead (literally). Very itchy and takes a long time to come off.

Breathtaking views of the beach and bacon.

This is a beautiful place, a must see. The view is breathtaking as you climb up the side of the cliff to reach the lighthouse. The secluded beach, picturesque mountain view and cliff view are mesmerizing. We took fantastic photos. A hidden gem and certainly an interesting and adventurous place to visit.

A must see. This area is simply breathtaking. View of the beach below as you climb the side of the cliff towards the lighthouse. We were so glad we made this trip from Rincon.

Where the Caribbean and the Atlantic meet

This was my first visit to this lighthouse. The views of the convergence of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic that meet at that moment are reminiscent of the film Graf Monte Cristo. Deep cliffs, blue seas and plenty of horizon make for the most incredible photos. The history of the lighthouse includes one of two staircases, designed and made by Mr. Eiffel, the same built the famous tower in Paris. The structure has been returned to its original state, which also includes a viewing terrace on the second floor. The guides are very informative and will tell you all about “Salinas” and the nearby beaches along with history. I highly recommend it.

Beautiful!

I recommend if you have young children not to go to the lighthouse. It’s a nice view but happened on a rock and there’s nothing to keep someone from falling. The sights are amazing and it was quiet enough.

Beautiful scenery

We visited the Beacon Hotel Cabo Rojo and it was my friends for the first time, but my tired and let me tell you that I will come again and again! The view is simply breathtaking and relaxing. Right next to it is not quite in the center of the beach where the water is calm and clear! So if you’re visiting Bacon, make sure you pack early and bring along some picnic baskets and hang out on the beach afterwards. I will definitely make a day out of it on my next visit! Have a good time !!!

Amazing view!

Nice hotel, really provides an amazing view! Come early. This is our second stay, with gates closing 1/2 an hour earlier than posted. There are no toilets outside the lighthouse. Still, great view and walk!

It was an exciting visit to the Lighthouse on the shimmering.

We stayed at Villa Las Palmas in Playas del Caribe (find it on Litse – book) which was only 4 minutes from the lighthouse. Park in the base on the Hill before you can walk to Playuela beach. A free bus will take you to the top of the Bacon cliffs. View, view view, miles of ocean, cliffs and sights to see. GREAT view of Playuela Beach, Puerto Rico’s most famous beach. Enjoy a free lighthouse tour and it’s history. Then take a tour of the cliffs to the coast and see the Sea Caves and Sea Arches. Delicious. Then I went to our apartment, Villa Las Palmas, which had a full view of the bacon. A very memorable week

A must see when in the area!

This place has one of the most amazing views you can imagine. On your way here, make sure to check out the observation tower on your left side, it has a great view of Las Salinas (Salty Falts) and it gives you a lot of information in terms of the area and the reserve, also here on your way to the Lighthouse!
