Your Bacardi Rum Factory and Old San Juan adventure starts with your pickup at your hotel lobby you are then driven in comfort on a scenic roadway around the Bay towards the Bacardi Factory. Walk the Paseo del Morro

Before leaving Old San Juan there’s one more stop, the Paseo del Morro. Once a maintenance road for the city wall, this 1 mile walk around the outside of Old San Juan was designated part of the San Juan National Historic Site in 2001.

You can enter this free walkway over near Raices Fountain on Paseo de Princesa where you will descend a number of stairs down to sea level. The walk will then take you right along the outside of the stone walls of Castillo San Felipe del Morro next to the sea.

Definitely take some water and wear sunscreen for this walk as you will be fully exposed to the elements. It also is one of the best places to watch the sun set in Old San Juan.

How to Get to the Bacardi Rum Distillery from Old San Juan

There are a few options on how to get to the Bacardi Distillery from Old San Juan. Of course you can get there by car, Uber, or taxi, but there is also a ferry available from Pier 2 in Old San Juan. The ferry departs every thirty minutes and is just fifty cents each way. You’ll need to take the ferry to the Cataño pier where you’ll catch a taxi for the last two miles. Taxis will be to the right near the bus station when you exit Cataño pier.

Being an island, Puerto Rico has a lot of amazing beaches. Visiting at least one of these perfect beaches is certainly one of the best experiences to have in San Juan. Just be aware that in the summer and on holiday weekends they may get crowded, but during the week, there will be plenty of space to enjoy their beauty.

It’s worth noting that all beaches in Puerto Rico are open to the public, but there are also a few “public beaches”, or balnearios, which offer lifeguards, lockers, showers and toilets, and paid parking. Here are a few of the best beaches in the San Juan area.

Isla Verde

Located in the suburbs of San Juan, Isla Verde is a beach resort area with some of the best high-end hotels in Puerto Rico. It also offers the longest and widest stretch of beach in the San Juan area. Since the water in Isla Verde is relatively calm, it is ideal for swimming and water sports, like jet skiing. Isla Verde also offers one of the two public beaches, or balnearios, in the San Juan area, along with plenty of places to grab a bite to eat.

Condado Beach

The popular beach of Condado is one of the closest to San Juan and is a great place for people watching. You’ll find hotels lining Condado Beach along with lounge chairs and umbrellas for rent. Because of this, it is one of the more popular beaches with tourists in the area. If you want a more local experience in the Condado area, head over to Ocean Park Beach.

Escambron Beach

4. Learn Salsa & Dance with the Locals at La Placita

La Placita de Santurce, or better known as just La Placita, is the location to be in the evenings. Starting around 6 pm this market square by day transforms into a giant block party. You’ll find restaurants and kiosks selling some of the local specialties, salsa and reggaetón clubs full of people dancing the night away, and lots of inexpensive drinks. These all overflow into the square.

While I personally recommend just trying your hand at the local salsa clubs, you can also take Salsa dance lessons. It’s a great way to take part in the rich culture of Puerto Rico, and by taking a class, you’ll get introduced to the beginner steps (and help finding the beat!).

Then take those skills out to the clubs in La Placita to dance circles around everyone! Okay, maybe you won’t pick up advanced moves that quickly, but you will be ready to tackle the nightlife!

Don’t be shy as the locals love to dance and have a good time. When you enter almost any salsa club there will be plenty of people wanting to dance. Also, it’s worth noting, that while Puerto Rico is a territory of the US, the drinking age is just 18.

5. Eat the Local Cuisine

Obviously you’re going to eat while you’re in San Juan, but don’t miss out on some of the classic Puerto Rico dishes while you’re there. Trust me, it can be distracting with all of the delicious poke bowls and fish tacos available, but you need to try at least a couple of the local dishes.

Mofongo

Mofungo is a dish made up of fried plantains, crunchy pork skin, and garlic all mashed together. It can be served with a wide variety of toppings as an entrée or an appetizer.

Tostones and Maduros

Often served as a side, instead of french fries like in the US, tostones are made by mashing unripe green plantains down and frying them. Simply sprinkle them with salt and consider dipping them in a sauce of some kind. Similar to tostones but made with ripe sweet plantains, Maduros are a fried plantain that’s on the sweeter side.

Alcapurrias

Resembling a corndog, alcapurrias are made with plantains and yucca and then filled with ground beef and fried. Found all over Puerto Rico, alcapurrias are particularly common at the little restaurants who specialize in fried foods, known as cuchifritos.

Empanadillas

Savory half-moon shaped turnovers that can be filled with almost anything, empanadillas can be baked or fried. You’ll find them on menus as part of a meal, or they make a great snack while drinking. Don’t miss the Carne + Cheddar empanadillas at La Alcapurria Quema, right next to La Placita. I still dream of it sometimes as it was that tasty!

Piraguas

Cool down on a hot day by picking up a piragua. This crushed ice cone comes with flavored fruit syrups, kind of like a snow cone. It is most likely found in Old San Juan which is perfect to beat the heat of the day while exploring!

6. Hike in El Yunque National Rainforest

Located just a half-hour from San Juan is the beautiful tropical rainforest, El Yunque. El Yunque National Forest is popular for its hiking trails and rare wildlife, like birds and the local coqui frog. Take a break from city and beach life to take a short hike. Upon arrival, you’ll quickly understand why it is a top experience to have in San Juan – it’s unlike anything else in the region!

Mount Britton Tower Trail

Just 1.6 miles roundtrip, the Mount Britton Tower Trail follows a paved path up to El Yunque Peak through the Cloud Forest. You’ll be rewarded with great views over the entire forest. Wear good shoes as the path can get slippery when wet… and it is frequently wet as it is a tropical forest.

La Mina Trail

This 1.3 mile trail is one of the most popular in El Yunque. You’ll follow La Mina River down through the tropical trees and brush to La Mina Waterfall. This waterfall drops over 35 feet and features a pool at the bottom which you can swim in. Take your swimming gear!

Before you go, check the official El Yunque National Forest website to ensure the areas and trails you want are open. They are typically all open, but they can close due to extreme weather or other atypical events.

Tour Options for El Yunque

If you don’t have your own transportation, like a rental car, it is probably easiest to take a tour to get to El Yunque. It will also enable you to fit the most into your time. Here are three great options.

Join a 5 hour Nature Walk Adventure that will take you to La Coca Falls, the Yokahu Observation Tower, Bano Oro, and finally Puernto Roto for a swim.

Spend 4 hours adventuring through the rainforest with experiences like rope swings into the water, sliding down natural water slides, making a 40-foot cliff jump into the river, and more!

Combine El Yunque Forest with a trip to Laguna Grande Bio Bay: First you’ll hike through the rainforest, including visiting the natural waterfalls and waterslides, and then you’ll head to Fajardo Bioluminescent Bay to kayak through the glowing water.

7. Snorkel or Scuba Dive

Home to 700 different species of fish, shark, whales, and turtles, Puerto Rico offers a lot of opportunities to snorkel and scuba dive. In fact, the water near Mona Island is the clearest water in the Caribbean with visibility up to 165 feet (50 meters). This easily makes it one of the top experiences to have in San Juan!

If you have your own gear, you can try out snorkeling on your own, but to get to many of the best snorkel locations, you’ll still need to take a tour. Here are some of the best locations to snorkel near San Juan.

Escambron Beach

The closest option to San Juan is Escambron Beach, right next to the Caribe Hilton Hotel. As mentioned above, the beach is protected by large rocks which makes it a treasure trove of sea creatures along the reef below the rocks.

Fajardo and surrounding Islands

The best way to explore the snorkeling around Fajardo is to take a catamaran tour. This way you can visit various reefs, islands, and atolls to see some of the best sea life. One of the best options is to take a catamaran and snorkeling tour to the deserted island of Icacos. It leaves from Puerto del Rey Marina, the largest marina in the Caribbean, and you can either transport yourself, or add-on transportation.

La Parguera Nature Reserve

Located on the opposite side of the island from San Juan, it will take about 2 hours to get to La Parguera by land. From there you have easy access to La Parguera Nature Reserve where you can snorkel in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Other great options include a number of small islands off the coast of Puerto Rico like Caja de Muertos, Vieques, and Culebra. No matter where you decide to snorkel, you’ll find lots of tropical fish and other sea life in the waters surrounding Puerto Rico. 8. Experience Bioluminescent Bay

If you’ve never seen a bioluminescent body of water, you need to while you’re in San Juan! There are actually only five ecosystems in the world where the concentration of dinoflagellates is high enough to consider them bioluminescent bays, and you’ll find three of them in Puerto Rico! This means that when you boat, kayak, or put your hand in the water, the plankton will start glowing. It’s really incredible – making it one of the top experiences to have in San Juan!

Of the three options, Laguna Grande is your closest option to San Juan, but you can make it to any of them. Drive yourself or select one of the many tour options available. Remember, the darker it is, the brighter the glow – so try to avoid full moons!

Laguna Grande in Fajardo

The closest bioluminescent bay to San Juan is Laguna Grande – sitting just about 1 hour away. Well, Laguna Grande is really more of a lagoon, but it offers the same incredible experience, closer to San Juan.

Take a 2 hour kayaking tour of Laguna Grande to experience this phenomenon – note that this tour does not provide transportation to and from San Juan. If you need transportation, this 2 hour kayaking tour offers transportation as an optional add-on.

La Parguera in Lajas

The bay at La Parguera is the only one that allows a motorboat to come in and out of it and is about 2 hours away from San Juan. You can get there by taking a 9 hour trip to the traditional fishing village of La Parguera. Then, after nightfall you will cruise out to the bioluminescent bay. All transportation is included.

Mosquito Bay in Vieques

Mosquito Bay has been recognized by the Guinness World Records book as the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. This is due to the large quantity of dinoflagellates in the bay and the lack of light pollution. Unfortunately, as it sits off the coast of Vieques, it is more difficult to get there from San Juan as an evening tour.

Visit the Islands of Culebra and Vieques

Take a day trip, or overnight trip, to one of the neighboring islands of Culebra or Vieques. To get there, you can catch the very affordable ferry in Ceiba to either island. Take a look at the ferry schedules and book your tickets in advance online or day of at the ferry terminal.

Pro Tip: Only 20% of tickets are available online, so even if your dates are sold out, you may be able to purchase a ticket at the ferry terminal.

Culebra Island

Located just about 10 miles off the east coast of Puerto Rico, Culebra is a popular day trip location. If you take the public ferry over, you’ll need to get yourself around the island. Fortunately, you can catch an affordable taxi, or publico, or you can rent a car or bike.

The number one point of attraction on Culebra Island is Flamenco Beach. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico and frequently rated one of the best beaches in the world! You’ll find everything you need for a comfortable day on the beach with bathrooms, showers, refreshment stands, and of course chairs and umbrellas for rent.

Spend the day at one of the many beautiful beaches like Sun Bay, Playa Caracas, or Playa Negra or take off on an adventure exploring the back roads. Sun Bay is the most popular beach due to it having 2 miles of beach with lifeguards, showers, bathrooms, and some food options. You also have the option of all kinds of watersports, like jet skiing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, and more!

It’s worth staying overnight in Vieques to go night kayaking on the famous Mosquito Bay to see the bioluminescence. Not to mention the star gazing on Vieques is incredible as two-thirds of the island are a natural reserve limiting the light pollution.

10. Admire the Street Art & Graffiti

While San Juan features some amazing art museums, like the Puerto Rico Museum of Art or the Puerto Rico Museum of Contemporary Art, you’ll find some of the best art in the streets. You’ll come across a few iconic murals in Old San Juan, but the majority are located in the Santurce neighborhood of San Juan.

Throughout Old San Juan you’ll find a few key pieces of art. The one most worth noting is “La Puerta de la Bandera” just off of Plaza de Armas on Calle San Jose. This famous street mural features a door painted as a Puerto Rican flag on an abandoned building. In 2016 it was changed to a black and white flag from the once prominent red, white, and blue colors. The exact meaning has been muddled, but in essence it was to show that Puerto Rico is in mourning.

Santurce Murals

The Santurce neighborhood offers dozens of amazing (and Instagramable) murals. These are mostly a result of Santurce es Ley which has evolved into an annual art and music festival. It started back in 2010 to help revitalize the rundown Santurce neighborhood, and while the neighborhood is still on its way to full recovery, it is becoming a hip neighborhood with an artsy vibe. Don’t worry, it is safe to walk around and admire all of the art.

Bacardi Island (Cayo Levantado): Dominican Republic, Samana Peninsula

Bacardi Island or Cayo Levantado – in the Samana Bay (Dominican Republic): history, photos, interesting facts and more.

One of the main attractions of the Dominican Republic is Bacardi Island.

So this tiny island, located in the Gulf of Samana in the north of the Dominican Republic, was nicknamed by tourists. And then the locals.

The actual name of the island is Cayo Levantado. But after it became the main location for filming advertising for Bacardi rum, this name was inherited by the island. nine0003

The area of Cayo Levantado is only 1 square kilometer, which is why we often call it a micro-island.

And the population of Bacardi (officially) – 0 people.

It would seem that if people do not live on the island, then it is uninhabited. But this rule does not apply to Father Bacardi.

You can’t really find the huts of the locals here. It is forbidden to settle on the already tiny territory of the island.

But, nevertheless, people live here permanently. Contradiction? Not really 🙂 The fact is that about half of the island is occupied by the Bahia Principe Luxury Cayo Levantado hotel. And tourists live in it. But, of course, it is impossible to officially consider them the population of the island. nine0003

Bacardi Island is interesting primarily for its white sandy beach with azure water.

People come here not for active recreation and there are no special entertainments on the island. But Cayo Levantado has something more to offer its guests.

Here, on a very tiny area, you can feel yourself in an atmosphere of complete unity with nature. Feel like a Robinson or a discoverer of new lands.

At the same time, one of the beaches of the island offers a breathtaking view of the mountains of the Samana Peninsula, huge palm trees and cliffs framing the coast. nine0003

You can get to Bacardi Island as part of a group or individual excursion to the Samana Peninsula. From January to the end of March, this tour includes humpback whale watching.

History: the island of Cayo Levantado (or Bacardi island)

You will hardly be surprised if we say that Christopher Columbus discovered this island to the world. The first contact of the famous navigator and his team with local residents on the Samana Peninsula took place on January 12, 1493 years.

However, the Taino Indians did not welcome the strangers cordially. A small battle ensued. But since the forces were unequal. Very soon, the colonialists continued to study and develop the entire region.

Some historians believe that at that time Samana was not a peninsula, but an island.

The commercial development of Cayo Levantado began in 1746 under the leadership of the governor Francisco Rubio y Peñaranda.

In the year 9, Napoleon Bonaparte came to power and decided to seize these territories.

He sent 80 ships and about 58,000 people to the shores of the current Dominican Republic. And he intended to capture Samana and Cayo Levantado. However, the locals, as well as the yellow fever epidemic, resisted the invaders. And they did not allow Napoleonic plans to be carried out.

Travel Tips

It is better to come to Bacardi Island in the morning or at lunchtime – at this time the water is brighter and more beautiful in color.

Be sure to explore the island – despite being quite small – Cayo Levantado has a varied landscape. There is a sandy shore, and a palm grove, and centuries-old trees entwined with lianas … And also a rocky part of the coast, tropical trees inclined to the water and a pier. Don’t forget your diving mask – the underwater world of the island is not as diverse as in the Red Sea. But still – you will have something to see.
