500 años de Historia – Localizada en la Calle del Cristo, en el Viejo San Juan.
Fue construida en 1521, destruida por una tormenta, y posteriormente reconstruida en 1529. La Iglesia fue nombrada basílica menor por el Papa Pablo VI el 25 de enero de 1978, por petición del cardenal Luis Aponte Martínez, Arzobispo de San Juan.
La misma contiene los restos del explorador y conquistador Juan Ponce de León, así como del mártir San Pío. Contiene algunas reliquias como las de los ornamentos y vestiduras usadas por el Papa Juan Pablo II en su visita a Puerto Rico en 1984.

Catedral de San Juan Bautista History
La Catedral de San Juan Bautista carries a longer formal name – Catedral Metropolitana Basílica de San Juan Bautista. In English, it’s the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Saint John the Baptist. I’ve always known it more simply, though, as the San Juan Cathedral.
The Church, located in the heart of Old San Juan, dates back to 1521.

Columbus had inaugurated Europe’s murderous conquest of the Americas just 29 years prior. Construction of Castillo San Cristoball del Morro, Old San Juan’s venerable fortress, wouldn’t start for another 18 years.
Indeed, these were the shakiest of formative times for the Puerto Rico we would come to know.
You really couldn’t count on much to last very long. It’s no surprise, then, that the original Catedral, constructed of wood, was destroyed by a hurricane.
A new Catedral de San Juan Bautista opened in 1540. We’d probably recognize it for the most part, though the structure has seen numerous modifications over its many years.
Another thing it’s seen over the centuries: misfortune.
Trials, Tribulations
The San Juan Cathedral has been robbed, attacked, and damaged on numerous occasions. In 1615, for instance, another hurricane tore the roof off the hallowed structure.
When the British sacked Old San Juan in 1598, the Cathedral was looted. The attack, led by the Earl of Cumberland, was the only successful foreign attack on El Morro in history.

Despite the many trials in its past, the Catedral de San Juan Bautista continues to stand strong today, attracting scores of visitors each year. And not just congregants either.

Design and architecture buffs revel in the Cathedral’s vaulted Gothic ceilings. History lovers enjoy visiting the tomb of the legendary Spanish explorer, Ponce de León.
A second shrine, dedicated to the Blessed Carlos Manuel Rodríguez Santiago, is also found inside the church. A native of Caguas, he is the first Puerto Rican/Caribbean-born layperson to be beatified.

A walk through old San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico.
Part 1.
In the last chapter we walked around the old fortress of Morro. After walking around the old fortress, we went to the nearby old town or Old San Juan. The buildings and residents of San Juan, as it were, answer the question: What would happen if Cuba remained under the yoke of the United States? The city is clean, the optimistic mood of the inhabitants confirms that they live freely under the wing of the American eagle. Puerto Rico, unlike Cuba, nature did not give the snow-white beaches of Varodero and sunsets over the sea, but tourism is very flourishing here. Ships with tourists are moored, equal to the population of the city. Occupation of the male population: the service sector, the US army, the music industry. We all know Puerto Rican singers: Daddy Yankee, Ricky Martin, Chayanne, Marc Anthony and many others. By the way, next to the old town, across the street, is the Barrio Fino or La Perla district, after which Daddy Yankee decided to name his album, and Luis Fonci shot his video clip.
I’ll tell you right away, it’s better not to go there, it’s quite dangerous. I divided the walk through the old San Juan on the site into 2 parts, there are a lot of photos and the page will take a long time to load.
Plaza del Quinto Centenario
At the north end of Old San Juan is a modern plaza built in 1992 to commemorate Columbus’ first voyage to the Americas over 500 years ago, dubbed the Quincentennial Plaza. Rising in the middle of the square is a 40-foot tower known as El Tótem Telúrico, meant to symbolize the origin of the New World. The square is opposite the most impressive landmark of Old San Juan, the castle of San Felipe del Morro.

Plaza de San José, formerly called Plaza de Santo Domingo, named after Santo Domingo de Guzmán, adjoins Iglesia San José.
The square has been mapped since the early 16th century, and like the rest of San Juan’s squares, it had a rustic appearance until the 19th century.century. The dominant feature of this small cobbled square is the statue of Juan Ponce de León, cast from English cannons captured during the raid of 1797. Ponce de León’s finger points to Caparra, the original settlement he founded in 1508. This is a popular spot on weekend evenings.

Cathedral of San Juan Bautista – visit the second oldest cathedral built in America. San Juan Cathedral was the first school in Puerto Rico and the first US-flagged school. Inside the church lie the remains of Juan Ponce de Leon.
The Church of San José, formerly the Church of Santo Tomas de Aquino, located at the highest point of Old San Juan in the Colonial Historic District of Puerto Rico’s capital, is one of the first architectural works related to the island, and more early examples of 16th-century Spanish Gothic architecture in the Western Hemisphere.
The building showcases four centuries of design and architecture based on the masonry tradition, including unusual Isabelle Gothic vaults, a rare Catalan architectural design.
In 2013, it was included in the list of 11 historical sites in danger of disappearing.
The church was built between 1532 and 1735 by order of the Dominicans as part of their convent of Santo Tomas de Aquino. Its current name was given by the Jesuits when they took control of the monastery in 1865.
Juan Ponce de León, the first Spanish governor of Puerto Rico, was buried in the crypt of the church from 1559 to 1836, then his remains were exhumed and transferred to the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista. His grandson Juan Ponce de León II is buried in a crypt under the floor of the sanctuary. The Puerto Rican artist José Campeche is also buried in the church.
Among its chapels is the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary, originally Our Lady of Victory, founded by a famous nobleman and neighbor of San Juan, Captain Juan Gilarte de Salazar (grandson of the conquering captain Diego Gilarte de Salazar) and his sister.
son-in-law Doña Luisa de Vargas, in honor of the Christian victory at the Battle of Lepanto. Below this chapel is believed to be the well-known “Crypt of the Governors” where some of the governors who were in charge of the island and who died here are buried, including members of the Gilarte de Salazar family.
In 1858, the Jesuit order took over the temple and renamed it Iglesia San José. Later, in 1887, the church passed into the hands of Paules missionaries. Each of the religious orders that led the temple left its mark, changing and updating the structure, so a wide variety of styles is represented here. The church was also damaged during the bombardment of San Juan during the Spanish–American War (1898).
In 1972, the 15th-century painting Virgen de Belem disappeared from the church. In 2002, after work began on the restoration of the structure, several wall paintings were discovered, including a painting from the mid-19th century during the Battle of Lepanto.

VIEJO SAN JUAN FILLED WITH countless hidden treasures within its ancient stone walls, much more in the southwest a corner where a modest chapel gives hope to its visitors, as it has done for over 250 years.
Tucked away in a corner of the old city of San Juan is a tiny chapel, one of the most beautiful and secluded monuments of the old capital. It was built on top of the ancient stone walls that protected the capital of Puerto Rico in 1753 to celebrate the miracle. Since then, tens of thousands of faithful visitors have come to this humble chapel to pray for healing.
As the story goes, during the celebration of San Juan Bautista in 1753, the rider Baltazar Montanez lost control of his horse and fell on the rocks below. Spanish government secretary Don Mateo Pratts watched the drama unfold from a nearby balcony and allegedly exclaimed, “Health Christ, save him!” Although the horse did not survive the fall, the young rider survived.
In the same year, Montanez built a small chapel on the very spot where he fell off the cliff. The altar was built of shining silver and gold leaf and surrounded by beautiful oil paintings by the famous Puerto Rican artist José Campeche. Most of the modest but immaculately furnished chapel has not changed since then. But over the decades, it was gradually added by believers who came to the chapel in search of their own miracles. The chapel is adorned with tiny silver ornaments, each representing a diseased part of the body. These small milagros, or miracles, are the cause of pain for the pilgrims and are shaped like miniature silver legs, arms, hearts and lungs.
